Does anyone know Majorca?

Knownowt, 23 May, 2009 at 07:42 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 12

My mother wants to go to Majorca. I've never been there but always thought it was v touristy (something my mum would not enjoy) but she says apparently half the island is touristy and half is idyllic. The problem is she doesn't know which half is which ?

Does anyone know which areas, if any, we should be looking at? The quieter the better really- her ideal would be some unspoilt and pretty countryside, maybe with a small restaurant knocking about somewhere but few other tourists.

We went in 2005 with my PIL. We were in the north east side which wasn't tourist based at all. We hired a car and drove about the island and stayed in a little 2 bed flat about a mile's walk along the sea front to the centre. I can't remember what it was called but I will find out. I have loads of photos of the area if you want me to upload some of the place we were you can see the "non clubby side" so to speak.

edited as I got my shredded wheat the wrong way round, its east not west!!!

I think its alcudia bay or something like that is where we were but I will check with my H when he's home.

I've not been to that bit but the north west and north are the least touristy, or if you're not bothered about beaches, inland. The east and south are the most touristy bits but even here there's some spots that aren't Blackpool abroad.

I had to bite my lip when discussing this with the inlaws, who once slated Cala D'or where I'd been, which to be honest is touristy, but they said it was all English louts abroad. They've never been to Cala D'or as they prefer Magaluf?

https://www.spanish-fiestas.com/things-to-do-in-port-dandratx/ I went here as a child - it was very beautiful. I also went to Alcudia about 10 years ago, it was ok, but touristy.

Avoid Magaluf. Hideous hideous place. Reminiscent of those pictures of Cardiff on a Saturday night that were published recently. But with Martin Fry from ABC, still in a gold lame suit. Avoid.

There are some lovely little villages around Cala D'Or. We went in '97/'98 to Cala Egos, which was lovely. Mostly local-owned villas, cobbled streets, a fabulous market in the next big town ( I forget what its called) and not touristy at all ( I remember being very disappointed there were no 'clubs'......but I was only 16 ?)

Very relaxed, but with really good bus service if we wanted to go somewhere busy.

We're just back from Cala Bona and loved it, a bit touristy in terms of lots of bars along the main road but no clubs or 18-30 type places, I do love that area of Majorca. You can walk to Cala Millor from there and take a bus to Sa Coma, Porto Cristo, Palma etc. but again, if your mum only wants to find a sprinkling of bars/restaurants then it's probably still too busy for her. It has a lovely harbour. MrSun and I don't really like to visit the same place twice but have thought that perhaps we could do Cala Bona once a year and then somewhere different the other end of the year, it has the atmosphere, the weather and it's a short flight from the uk, perfect for us.

Also, I know you've said Majorca but what you've said your mum likes really made me think of Mojacar https://www.andalucia.com/villages/mojacar/home.htm and that area.

Soller, 45 mins from the airport on the north west coast. Surrounded by mountains, lovely village with bars and restaurants but no clubs. About 10 mins from the coast. Has a tram from village to beach. Also fabulous train ride through the mountains down into Palma if that takes your fancy.

I would say she would prefer the West - Puerto Andraitx or Soller maybe. I found the North, East and South to all be very commercial.

Another vote for the west and north-west, Deya is beautiful but well-known on the tourist trail now. If your mum would prefer countryside to coast, then definately check out fincas - usually small country houses which have been converted into B&Bs, also known as agroturismo. Some are very simple but others have onsite swimming pool and restaurant, but still only 20 or so rooms.
