Does anyone use Oracle?

Mrs T, 25 January, 2009 at 10:56 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 9

Just wondering if anyone uses Oracle? I've never used it before and I'd like some more information on it please. I'm going for an interview tomorrow and i'd like to have an idea of it before i go.

Thank you.

I do. What sort of information are you after and what sort of a role is it? Finance / Supply Chain / HR? End user / functional / technical / support?

Good luck for the interview in advance.

It's a finance role, not really sure what sort of information I'm after to be honest, how does it compare to Sage? Is it completely different? Is it easy to use?

Thanks for the advice and the good luck ?

Ah i have never used Sage but I have been using Oracle for lots of years. It has its quirks but most packages do. For me, I find it pretty intuitive and easy to learn. There are 2 parts to it, the professional forms and the self service screens. Most of the finance side uses the professional forms. It is usually configured to only allow certain roles access to certain functions, i.e. to prevent a user being able to alter the setup configuration or to prevent a user being able to fulfill a full process from start to finish.

There are loads of different releases of Oracle (often called EBS for E-Business suite) with the latest being R12. The most commonly used version is 11i (or 11.5.10+).

Where is the interview? (If you want to say that is). Not sure any of that will have helped. If you haven't used it before then it will take some getting used to, it is a large packaged application with loads of functionality.

Hi feathers, yes that has helped, hopefully i'll be able to pick it up fairly easily it sounds similar to Sage. I'm not sure if i can say the name of the firm as it's through a recruitment agents but it's a nationwide company at their offices in York. Thank you for the advice i really appreciate it ?

It is one of the market leaders (with other applications being SAP / JD Edwards / Peoplesoft and the like) so is probably quite different to Sage (although as I haven't seen it I can't say)

Have a look at the Oracle link for it, it may or not help a little:

    https://www.oracle.com/applications/e-business-suite.html

I think it is pretty easy to learn though so I am sure you will be fine.

I've used both and Oracle is a lot more complicated than the basic Sage packages. I'm sure you will be fine though once you've got through the basics. I would lie though and say I had used it if I hadn't

I use Oracle & Oracle Peoplesoft. I've used Sage in other jobs. Have to say that I prefer Oracle, there is much more functionality to it compared with Sage. It's easy enough to pick up if your comfortable with systems - don't let it worry you! Good luck with the interview ?

For non IT specific posts (developers or support) employers are often looking for people with transerferable skills, not experience on a particular piece of software. If a candidate can demonstrate that they have used comparable software most employers would be happy to send a new recruit on a course. So I wouldn't worry too much about brushing up on something that you haven't claimed to have much knowledge of elsewhere in the selection process. Best of luck.

WIQS. I've used both and I much prefer Sage. It took me a while to get to grips with Oracle, but once you've managed the basics you should be fine.

I have used Oracle for finance, and found it very easy to get to grips with. It is intergrated for difference businesses, but I am sure the main functionalities are the same
