Does being copied annoy you?

Peaches, 27 February, 2009 at 13:21 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 20

I'm probably being very unreasonable, but I'm miffed to have woken up this morning to an email from my Mum.

Last night I sent her a picture of my new hair-cut (very short). Her reply was that she really likes it ("except that you are frowning")* ? and that she has decided she wants the same, so she is going to get hers done like mine.

Now I know some (most?) people would be flattered, but hell, it's my Mum! One of the reasons I had it cut was because I hated having a perm (the hairdresser suggested one due to the humidity here) and looking like my Mum sometimes.

Would this miff / annoy you too? Should I ask her not to? Is that even fair??

Dammit .. why has it ticked me off??

And the ** next to the frowning comment is because I can't bloody frown lol. It was a shadow from a strand of hair. She doesn't know I've got botox (it's not so tight that I can't show expression, but where the mark is that she thinks is a frown, definitely is not). Again, why has this bothered me? Do all Mum's make comments that annoy their daughters, or is it just mine, or me that reacts badly?

Oh dear, I do think you are being a tad unfair! She's complimenting you on a fab new haircut and likes it enough to have a go herself. I don't think you can ask her not to, that wouldn't be fair. Afetr all, you are thousands of miles apart, it's not as if people will be doing a double take as you walk down the street together!

Take it as a compliment and enjoy your new "do" ?

You're right Copper - I just woke up grumpy!

I've just rung her (not about the hair!) and at the end of the conversation we talked about the pictures I'd sent over .. and then said 'you like my hair then', which is obviously nice that she does, and she said that as it suited me so much she thinks it will suit her. She said that she's been thinking about having it done for quite some time, but chickened out at the last minute. So if she had had the courage a while back, it could well have been ME copying HER!

Excuse my (10th day in a row waking up with a stonking headache) grumpiness.

Is there something else going on here in relation to you and your mum? It seems a bit odd that you would be upset over a haircut and a comment about a frown. Is it more that you were really pleased but then she commented negatively about a frown, thereby taking the shine off it somewhat?

I know it's frustrating when you have something new and someone else immediately gets the same, but imitation is the most sincere form of flattery (unless someone does it constantly then it just makes them a pillock with no imagination).

You definitely can't ask her not to have it cut like yours - anymore than you would let someone else do that to you! Sorry!

SLD .. it's got everything to do with something else going on here regarding our relationship!! My Mum just pushes my buttons .. or more to the point, I allow her to.

Mum does tend to copy what I do a lot - from ordering the same food and drink as me (she just can't make up her mind) - to all sorts of other things. Hell, she would have married Mr P if she had half a chance!

It just ticked me off when I read the email, but we were fine on the phone.

Aw mate I understand - I have a friend who is very similar... even down to the fact that when I got engaged, she exerted a certain amount of pressure on her boyfriend and... got engaged TWO DAYS later! ?

Thanks SLD. I know it's how I react that's the problem. Can't change Mum, but I can change me.

It's not only my brother who has issues, clearly!

    Cheers mate ?

Am smiling again. All in the attitude, right?

Peaches I could have written that message myself, my Mum is exactly like that she copies everything I do, and is infact more sneaky about it. About 18 months ago I had my long hair cut quite short as she was growing hers and I was getting comments from people that she was trying to look more like me, then guess what I return from holiday a week later and she has had the exact same cut as mine!! So I am now still left trying to grow mine back to not look like her. She is always doing things like this, such as buying the same clothes and painting her house in the same colours as mine.

I get one great with my mum but i would still think it was a bit random - and it think it is a bit bleurgh when i see it done

the fact you dont live nearby makes it a bit better - but i think copying haircuts is a bit leechy tbh

As much as my Mum copies lots of things I do, at least she isn't sneaky about it Mich. That would be worse. You have my sympathy.

It didn't even occur to me not to send the picture for copying value, but I did hesitate as I thought it would be a surprise when I next go back to the UK (which is definitely in May, possibly in 3 weeks too, but not confirmed)

Have to admit my first reaction was that I'll have to grow it out again just to be different. Or dye it bright pink. She wouldn't copy that now, would she. Or would she?! ?

Waaah, I've just realised that me and my mum have the same haircuts and that even worse, I copied her ? ?

Oh well, at least she's blonde and I'm brunette.

A colleague turned up to our Christmas do last year with a brand new image. She had a new haircut that was remarkably similar to mine and was dressed in a style which was remarkably similar to mine. Loads of people commented on it. For about five minutes I was a tidge annoyed as I wouldn't exactly say that she was usually the most stylish person, then I removed my head from my own ass and realised that it was quite a nice compliment really. She isn't a nutter either (that's another colleague!), so it wasn't a Single White Female type of problem.

I didn't mean you Peaches! I think that it is perhaps different with your mum? I really don't know how I'd feel because I don't have a mum, it's not a relationship I can understand really. No I think that my initial repsonse to my situation was not terribly nice, but luckily I didn't say anything, then got over myself ?

LOL I know Missus Jolly .. I was just reminding myself that yes, perhaps my head was up there.

She doesn't copy out of malice. She just doesn't know how to make a decision by herself without justification. So a lot of the time it's easier for her to do what I do.

And well done for not saying anything. I, on the other hand, would speak first, then engage brain later.

?That's brilliant! Congratulations on being able to see it though - it usually takes one of my friends to point out that sort of behaviour to me.

BG, did the pic of Sharon Stone suffice, or would you like to see the pic of me? If so, drop me an email and I'll send it.

Yeah, would love to see the email as I'm really nosey, and I also got a haircut based on a Sharon Stone pic. These are the 2 of the ones I took to my hairdresser (Sharon Stone & Elisha Cuthbert)- I can't find the other Sharon Stone one but it was similar to yours. I love my short cut, but I can;t get the slightly messy look - mine looks more sleek. Can you, and if so what are you using on it? I also have really fine hair I'll pm you my email.

I have no idea BG - Hitched isn't as user friendly as it used to be!

I'll stick my picture here, but only for a moment, so hope you're still about?!
