Does being part time affect redundancy pay?

Saphira, 18 December, 2008 at 16:23 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 3

I'm on Maternity Leave and am usually on BT but wondered if anyone on here could help me.

I'm a teacher and have heard that there are to be school closures in our LEA in the next 5 years. It could be our school due to crap SATs results, falling role and HT leaving. Nothing is certain yet but I'm just pondering.

I've already applied for flexible working when I go back to work in June and have had my request for 3 days a week accepted. What I'd like to know is, if I go back part time will that reduce the amount of redundancy pay I would recieve compared to if I was full time?

I'd be grateful for anyone's thoughts on this or direction to somewhere that I can find out.

Thanks

Yes it would affect it. If you go back part time then your salary will be pro-rata'd based on the number of days / hours that you work. Any redundancy money would be the same.

I think it might, depending on the terms offered.

I've just had a voluntary redundancy quote, and it includes a statement that the amounts quoted will be pro-ratad for any periods of part time working on the final offer.

My quote covers statutory redundancy pay, an ex-gratia payment and payment-in-lieu-of-notice. I think it's the PILON bit which is affected by part time working.

OK thank you. Hopefully we'll find out sooner rather than later so I can hedge my bets if necessary.

Your redundancy payment is based on your salary over a certain period of time, so as your salary would be lower then your redundancy payment would be lower.
