Does it matter???

l.jo-swansea, 21 July, 2008 at 21:45 Posted on Planning 0 11

If the material and style don't match the bride's dress?

After the last 2 weekends of trying on dresses, I have an idea of the stlye of dress I am likely to choose. Also I have an idea of the type of bridesmaid dresses I would like. However, they do not necessarily match. For example, my style of dress i more likely to be chifffon/organza and suite simple. But the BM dresses are taffeta 50's style short dress styles.

Every bride shop keeps telling me I need to get the BM dress to match my dress, but does this really matter??

    I dont tink so.

I have a good idea of my dress, but just a colour that i want for the bridesmaids. When we go off and try things, i hvae a feeling it will be hard to get a good couple of matching dresses for the pair of them as they are so different, let alone matching me!!

As far as im concerened, the material doesnt matter. And to be honest i dinnt realise it did until your post!!

I was all for putting down a deposit on a dress , before i could even get to the till the assisstant was steering me towards the bm's dresses , ok i thought i'd have a look.

I looked at one which was £120 , which was more than i was willing to pay anyway , she pulled it out of my hand said it doesn't match 'your' dress material' , put one of my bm's in a cubicle with a dress the assisstant chose because it matched , started uuuwwwing & aawwwing when she came out & told me that was the one £200 blumming quid & i have 5 bm's. Needless to say i did not get my or any dress from there.

The shop i have got my dresses from couldn't stop laughing when i told them & i got to chose my own dress , bm's chose theirs & i couldn't care if they are the same material or not.?

It depends what you want - my BMs all have different dresses and none of them 'match' my dress.

Mine aren't the same material and i think they look good together. Mine is quite floaty and organzery at the bottom and the bridesmaids dresses are taffeta i think?

The style is a little bit similar though, they both have the material sweeping off to the side if you get the idea from the pic below.

I wouldn't have given the materials a second thought but now you've got me wondering what material my dress is!

I was hoping this is the reaction I would get. I just want to be able to get a dress that suits me and the dresses that I want for bridesmaids without anyone having to compromise over materials and the overall look of them!!

But seriously, every bridal shop has looked at me asif I was daft over my flippancy on this matter....

I had a chiffon dress and organza bridesmaid

your day your way you should know yourself if you like it , taffeta can look a bit odd with chiffon but then it can also look nice depending on if its a shot taffeta or not i suppose it also depends on colours

Maybe they're after more ££££ from the bridesmaid dresses? I don't see it as a problem that they don't match!
