Does this sound reasonable?

Little Miss Tweety, 25 January, 2012 at 20:47 Posted on Planning 0 14

I have been asked to do hair for a wedding next year.

I am a trained hairdresser but now work in a different job and just do some family and friends hair at home.

Since starting to plan my wedding i have considered doing hair for weddings.

I have had experience of doing this in the past when i worked in the hairdressers but havent really done much bridal hair since leaving 2 years ago. (Done a bride in November, this was last minute so wasnt asked to give a quote etc).

I have been asked to do a bride, 3 bridesmaids and MOB plus trials for bride and BM's.

I have quoted £10 per person per trial and £100 on the day for everyone. This includes me going to their home.

Does this sound OK? Dont want her to think i am over charging and being greedy but dont want to look too cheap incase she thinks I'm rubbish if my prices are so low.

Honest opinions please.

I haven't booked a hairdresser yet but I think I would be really chuffed with that price! I think they would expect it to be less given that you aren't working as a hairdresser anymore but that still sounds reasonable for your time/ travel etc!

That sounds fairly cheap. I am paying £100 for my hair & make-up and that's mates rates. Not having any of the bridal party done though. Perhaps I am bring ripped off though! ?

I think that sounds very reasonable, will they let you keep/use image so if you want to build a portfolio for possible future work you will have some recent work to show?

I think that very cheap for 5 people. i was quoted £60per hour which i thought was really good and since you have 5 peoples to do i would consider this option. £20 for bridal hair is amazing.. where do you live as i could do with this cost ?

Yes she is happy for me to take photos to build my portfolio.

Prices depend on where you live i suppose. Im in scotland and not in a city so prices here will be cheaper compared to some places.

Im doing my own hair as i was too stingy to pay the prices that some people charge!

When you think about it a hair up or bridal style takes up to an hour on average and uses very little materials meaning that apart from time and travel it does not cost the hairdresser much money and most of it is profit. Yet again the 'W' word seems to bump up prices.

I didnt want to be like that as i hate being ripped off myself.

    I think it sounds reasonable.

My friend is a hairdresser and charges £60 an hour, she's charging me £30 an hour for me, mum and 3 bridesmaids, which she thinks will take 3 hours, so about £15 each.

Im a hairdresser, we charge £25 per person which imo is too cheap.

have you figured out if you will have time to do 5 peoples hair in time for them to still get ready etc if your doing it on your own.

also as you have said you have not done alot of bridal hair before. it can be very stressful depending on the bride, the most chilled out person can have a flap lol

make sure it is worth your while doing this or you will really resent it IMO Smiley smile

    Good luck btw

I would be over the moon to pay that price. I'm £81 for my trial, and hair for me and MoH on the day - including travel.

ETA: This includes a discount as I booked at a wedding fayre

I agree with the points most people have raised in that it is quite a bit below the average price that's been mentioned on here from time to time.

Don't forget that you are charging not just for your time but more importantly for your skill. As a qualified hairdresser who can do wedding hair (not all hairdressers will venture into this field) your skills are what people are booking you for and you can and should charge for your skills just as a plasterer, builder or electrician would.

If you intend to do this as a full-time business in the future, do some costings including petrol, car maintenance, time, hair products, advertising, stationery costs etc and then this will give you a better idea of the going rate. One of the biggest mistakes a lot of people make when starting up is undercharging and not charging enough to pay themselves a wage. In the initial stages, low costings may bring in the business and make you busy for a while but if in 6 months time, you haven't made a profit, then all the hardwork has been in vain.

There definitely is a demand for this type of wedding service so go for it and wishing you all the best with it too!

If you are honest with her and say " i've not done it for a while but have been practising & starting to buidl a portfolio up" kinda thing then she will be happy of the price & happy for you to take the photos etc.

    Thanks everyone.

she is aware that ive not done a lot of brides etc and is still happy for me to do it.

She getting married quite late in the day so time wont be an issue. She knows that this price is cheap because she my first proper booking and that i couldnt do every bridal party for this cost. She has also said she would be happy to model for me to add more images to my portfolio in the future too.

Thank you all for your advice and tios, esp those who have a business.

We're all having very simple up-do's for my wedding and i'm paying £30 per person,

i dread to think what it'dcost to do "proper" wedding hair i.e anything including a million pins or curls etc!!
