Does your car have a name?

WelshTotty, 20 May, 2009 at 15:42 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 35

My first car was Betsy (a C reg metro), my second car was Dotty (another metro) then the 10 cars Ive had since (escort, orion, astra convertible, cavalier, astra, vitara, mondeo, smart, pajero and smart), only 1 other has been named (My Pajero, called The Beast!) My current Smart has no name, so Im thinking when my new one arrives in the next week or so, I wonder if I will feel like naming it or not.

Maybe Ive grown out of naming cars, but I do think Ive grown less attached to cars as Ive got older, maybe thats why they dont have names any more.

So do you have a name for your car and if you do what is it?

Only my first car had a name. She was 'Squash', a bright orange W reg (from first time around - 1980) Metro with black vinyl interior. I can still remember the licence plate.

Subsequent 7 cars have been nameless (unless you count the black firebird that was nicknamed Kitt by my work colleagues)

I've only ever owned 3 cars and yes they've all had names... Dudley was a Cyan Cinqucento (who was gay), Jack was my lovely but accident prone MX5, and now I have Bella the Black Z4 who is my pride and joy.... Am I in the minority naming my cars?!

We don't really name our cars but my current runabout is called Cleo or Cup (Renault Clio 172 Cup) and my H's 'project' is called Sud (Alfasud). Not very original.

I do have a duck door stop tha is called George though.

They end up with nicknames rather than names now I suppose but I've had

Fanny - red vauxhall viva estate (showing my age now)

Minge - white ford escort - number plate ended MNJ which seemed to follow on nicely from Fanny LOL

    Chi-Chi - red fiat panda

    Syndney - red fiat strada

Bonk - blue ford fiesta - reg ended 8ONC which looked like Bonk - I'm seeing a s-e-x theme here

Barney Mobil - purple suzuki vitara

    Freebie - Freelander

Scarlet - my new toy, red Mondeo estate to tow my caravan ❤️

I have had 5 cars but only named one of them.

It was my 1st Mini & he was called Marvin, I have another Mini now but haven't felt the urge to give it a name.

My first car was a C reg Nissan Cherry called Mungo (Mungo Cherry?), my next was an old woman of a Peugeot 106 called Mary, my latest car (a KA) is called Sexy Sadie and our VW Camper is called Manfred (Manfred Van?).

I think I have some basic need to name vehicles and I see nothing wrong with it.

No. Such behaviour is just the wrong side of twee in my books.

That said, I did once have a rusty orange 18 year old Volvo estate that my friends christened The Brick.

We have only had 3 cars but they've all had names:

Bambina - a green Fiat punto (she was little and Italian)

Tronbina - blue Audi A2 (looks like the cars from Tron)

Vanbina - is a transit van.

Theres nothing wrong with naming vehicles! I think cos Ive had a personal plate for the past 8 cars Ive had, Ive not really thought about naming them as they havent had different numbers and letters in the numberplates (which is where Id get the idea of a name from)

Hmm what would you name a black and silver smart with a red interior? Blackie? Hey Ho Silver?.....

    lol

My first car (peugeot 205) was 'The Beast'. My VW Golf was 'Zena' , Our Rover was called Rita (because Rita Fairclough drove an identical one) but our Peugeot 307 has no name. Lord Vixen's vans have been Molly and Kiwi

We name our cars but they have all been called the same name so far -- we've had 3 Ford KAs over time which have all been called Baby KA!

The third Baby KA is now mine and Mr Caterpillar has a Skoda Fabia which is called Gruffalo on account of the letters in the numberplate!

I have never thought of the cars as having a gender, but Mr Caterpillar reckons all the KAs have been girls and his new car is a boy!

I also had a Pajero who I called 'THE BULL'.....one night, when I may have had a glass of wine I ordered him a wheel cover with 'THE BULL' on it. When it came I was mortified and hid it in the garage for nearly 2 years ?

My current 'stable on wheels' is called 'Granny Fuds' or 'Fuds' to her friends ?

My new (to me) car, a Honda CRX, is called The Gene Genie (after Gene Hunt).

I generally think of cars as female as well but am determined this one will be male.

I also regularly talk to the him......

I grew up in a car naming family, so it's odd to me if cars don't get names! ?

    Cars that my parents had when I was a kid included;

    • Daphne the D-reg Astra
    • Harry the H-reg Rover
    • Katy the K-reg Astra
    • Ruby the R-reg Corsa (spotting a theme to how a name is picked?!)

And recent cars I've had since leaving home have been Nelly (N-reg Punto), Terry T-reg Accent and Lewie (clio with LWE as last three letters). My Mum currently has a MX5 called Baby as it's her wee toy and Dad's Impreza is just known as Scooby, very unoriginal!

Current cars are Des (Mondeo - say his name and his model together in a funny accent to get Mr FigJam's "humour"!) and Rex the VX, also known as "sexy Rexy"! ?

My horse trailer also has a name and is Trev the Trailer! ?

I've never had a car but I've nicknamed my boyfriend's car "Nina" after my grandma on dad's side because it's crotchety, crap, and doesn't like people. Just like my grandma.

I've since realised that it's alright actually, I just couldn't drive it properly at first!?

I've named all my cars and they are all called Betsy. My Mum called her car Betsy so i think that's where it came from. Many a morning i spent as a young girl, rubbing the dash board to warm her up saying 'come on Betsy'. She was very unreliable.

Our MK2 Jetta (before Betsy) was Rusty.

The MK2 Sirocco and other MK2 Golf's had no names.

    Now you're talking ?

I think my car naming resulted from an episode of Bottom, where Richie tells a story (badly) about a pair of trousers called Dave. From thereon, everything that doesn't have a name was christened Dave. I also use it when I forget men's names. It's quite often correct ?

This one doesn't. My first ever car was a Fiat Cinquecento called 'bluebell' (that was the colour).

My Mum used to own a brown mini called 'Teddy'

Erm, no. They're just cars! I do name plants though ... all geraniums have to be called Mary because it's the law.
