Do any of you have harnesses for your dogs? This will apply to people with bigger stronger dogs (Tricks? Harvo?, Missus s?) so claire and ray, sorry you're out ?

Missy isnt a big dog, shed be classed as medium but is muscley and her lead is a loop rope lead currently, the clip on ones to her collar are too much for her when she pulls.

Have any of you used across the chest harnesses at all? I think it would be kinda for her as shes a hound, she sniffs something and pulls mentally in another direction..for me its impossible to walk her without Mr F but when im on Mat leave im sure il be doing this much more.

I want a padded one so its not harsh on her but wondered if anyone has any recommendations?!

We use an gentle leader - trust me it works.

We have 2 springer spaniels, and I always struggled to walk both, the youngest was always pulling, it made dog walking really not fun.

The difference in her as soon as we tried it was instantaneous. Cost less than £10 from amazon, for a medium size. Your dog may not like it to begin with, but will soon get used to it.

    Hi Flowmojo

I think it really depends on the dog. We had one for Conan (German shepherd cross Doberman) when he was a puppy, and to be honest it made him pull even more.

We've got a Gentle leader, which we use with a double clipped lead, so one end clips to that and the other clips onto his collar. It's brilliant! Nonpullin whatsoever, and Conan weighs over 8 stone, me 7 stone, so if he wanted to, he could easily have me over.

Harley is now a beast and we did have a harness for him but it's now too small and he still pulled too hard for me to walk him. He now has a choke chain and is much easier to walk.

We have both our dogs on harnesses - Jasper is a staffy cross so very powerful and muscley and Jake, although a Jack Russell cross, can pull like a steam train. Besides, it's kinder for them, than having them on a collar.

Both boys have a harnesses from Perfect Fit (https://www.perfect-fit-dog-harness.com/perfect-fit-fleece-dog-harness) as they're adaptable - both of our dogs (being crosses) are a bit of a funny size. The harnesses are padded and we've been using them for years without problems.

We only have a harness to strap her into the car but I have heard a lot of good comments about the canny collar. A firend had a massive german sheppard that no one could walk, once they started using the canny collar he was much easier to control.

This, sometimes it actually enables the dog to pitch all it's weight against you therefore it makes it easier for them to pull you! what about training to heel?

Agree with that Willow- train to heel really helps. Then you can do loose lead walking, no arm or shoulder pain once you've to it sorted.

Especially if you've got a baby on the way, makes walks doggy while pushing pram much easier.

We just have a rope lead but have put some seriousness effort in to get her to walk to heel. Apart from the odd time when we first get out walking to the fields, where she is excited, she's pretty good and only 1. This is my worry- walking her with the pram, so we're really trying to crack down on pulling

It depends on the dog. If you have a dog that naturally 'pulls' like a husky, then you'd be better off with a Halti or similar.

If not, a harness is great.

Neither really works with Buster (in case you've not noticed, Buster's a little sh1t), but if we alternate between a Halti, harness and half choke collar we can keep it under control.

    Thanks Ladies!!

Missy is mainly a basset hound, altho has a spaniel head and temprement! So shes muscly all over! Sounds like the harness is a good option....she doesnt pull away from us except when she gets a scent, but thats her breed. Shes also scared of other dogs (big dark coloured ones to be precise) and will pull in the opposite direction if one approaches us!!

Not necessarily, we considered getting Ray a harness purely down to the comfort factor, we tried the lead first and it works for us, he's not much of a puller so it's fine. I do think dogs look more comfortable on a harness. I cant recommend any but I'm sure if you went to your local pets at home store they would be able to help you.

    Hi,

Not sure if someone has already mentioned this one, but I tried this headcollar with my strong red and white setter, it worked a treat!

When Shea had a harness it felt like he was going to pull my arm out of its socket! So now he has a padded Halti (we tried the gentle leader but when he did pull it rubbed the fur off of his nose!) and it makes a huge difference

My mum has Japanese Akitas and has always had to use a muzzle with them. I've just looked up the Halti and am sending dad the link. It looks brilliant.
