Dogs and chocolate - help

Mwnci, 16 March, 2009 at 18:27 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 7

Bit of a HRML really...

My pug The Moog found some chocolate dusted almonds today, and ate pretty much the whole box (310g) I'm in a bit of a tizz atm. He doesn't look too happy, he's a bit lethargic and has vomited a few times but he's alternating this with running round, barking and doing other normal dog-type activities. I'm tempted to call the out-of-hours vet because I'm a bit overprotective or would this be overkill, he has access to water and is drinking, in other people's experiences is he likely to be a bit off today and better tomorrow or is he on death's door and I should be rushing him to the vets (as is my default inclination if he even looks at me a bit funny)

God help if we ever have kids.

Thanks

    Call the vet now.

I'm not a very but I don't think there's masses the vet can do, likely they will pump his stomach and give charcoal to stop the body absorbing it. I am basing this on when my dog ate a tube of Ibuprofen gel and that's what the emergency bet did (why do they always do this out of hours ? ) , they kept him in overnight and he was fine, no lasting damage.

If it was me, I'd call the vet, seek their advice over the phone and then go by that. That's what I did when the above happened and the vet went off did some calculations based on the amounts he could have eaten and then said we should take him.

I am honestly sure he will be fine, it sounds like the being sick has been a good thing ?

Thank you for the replies and permission almost to phone the vet (it's what I was leaning towards but I phoned my father to ask what to do - I'm 26 so not sure why I do this - and he said he'd be ok, hmm ta)

I phoned his vet she said to keep an eye on him but she'll phone back after evening surgery ( I'd happily take him in but we're 45mins from them so it would have ended by the time I got there) if needs be I'll take him in out-of-hours or get a vet to come round later, but they seem to think he'll be ok.

He's vomited a couple more times and I doubt he has much in the way of chocolate or almonds left from what I can see. The last location he decided upon was about 2cm away from some Yr10 maths books Mr Mwnci was marking. If it had been closer, I can just imagine the surly teens being handed a soggy maths book - eww!

So thanks again (and a big thank you to the inventor of tiled floors!)

    Seriously though, hope he's ok.?

Can't add anything more to the advice but poor Moog. I'm sure he won't be going near chocolate ever again! ?

Thank you for the reassurance everyone and glad your dogs were ok Los and Poochanna

I'm still quite shocked that he managed to find anything at all chocolatey in this house considering I live here.

He seems more himself now which is a relief, he's currently napping on Mr Mwnci's lap (The Moog takes his role as lap dog very seriously) but Mr Mwnci keeps waking him up to stop him snoring which I think is a bit mean and probably means he'll be making his way onto my lap very shortly.

My late Scottie was a right chocolate thief. He once ate his way through a whole box of Baileys chocolates and threw up everywhere, and I mean everywhere, before he fell down the stairs. He also munched his way through a huge box of Thorntons Continental but spat out the ones he didn't like, not to mention stealing selection boxes every Christmas ( I gave up hanging chocs on the tree after he spent a whole day launching himself off the arm of the chair to grab them). He lived to be 14.
