Doing your own hair and makeup?

JessApril, 19 January, 2016 at 16:25 Posted on Planning 0 8

Hello, I'm back for more advice - you were all so sensible and helpful when I was worried about my dress, I'm hoping you can talk more sense into me!

I'm considering doing my own hair and makeup, and I wonder if any of you are doing (or have done) the same. Or if you think that it's a terrible idea!

Our wedding is in April this year, and we've chosen and paid or budgeted for almost everything now.... but I haven't done anything about hair and makeup. There's not a lot left in the budget so I'm trying to make savings on the last few things!

I'm reasonably confident with day to day make up - but not 100% sure that I can do something that'll stand up to being photographed all day. My hair is short and curly so not easy to do anything with - but I could just wear a sparkly hair clip and hope for the best!

I think I could just about afford to pay an expert, but with trials and bridesmaids on top it would be a stretch! I'm torn, because I don't want to look back at the photos and think that I should have made the extra effort - what do you think?

I'm doing my own makeup, but am having a hairdresser. Can you afford to do the same, if you're more confident with makeup than hair?

If you have plenty of practices then I definitely don't think it's a terrible idea. However I'd get started on practicing ASAP, as if you decide to book someone you will want to get that booked as soon as possible Smiley smile

I wouldnt do it myself... its one day where I want to look my best but I couldnt justify some of the flat out rediculous prices hairdresses where charging for wedding hair (£200 is more than flowers/rings/outfits etc...)

im luckly my bridesmaids are all hairddresses though ? and I have lots of beautician friends (dont even know how as im about as pruned and fashionable as a potato)

if I didnt have my girls to help though I would just book into my local hair dresseses they will trim and style hair for £9 or the full package with wash and finsh for £15 - its not super fancy updos and stuff but its better than I could do myself and for less than £10 or £20 its well worth it as a good blow dry, good straightening and stuff really shows and in the past ive noticed it can easily last 2 days even when slept on (but I would have to go to them a whole minute up the road lol)

Do you live anywhere near a cosmetology school? Many schools run salons that offer services at reduced prices. I'm sure they are many trainee beauty therapists that would love to have a wedding in their portofolio.

I'm getting married on August and going to do my own hair and makeup. For makeup I'm going to a have a session at Mac or Bobby brown counters, I think they are £30ish but can redeem back on products. I really need technique tips as well as some better products. So I will be planning to spend a bit on makeup but less than the cost of a MUA and will have the products afterwards. I've been trying out different hair styles that i like and is feasible to do myself. There are lots of videos on YouTube for ideas and tutorials-both hair and makeup. I don't really have the budget for professional hair and makeup and whilst my confidence in my own abilities is so so,it's growing after trying things out and ,I'd much rather teach myself, just more in my comfort zone!

It's worth looking around to see if there's anyone who hasn't been in the business that long. I'm paying £280 for myself, one bridesmaid and my mum to all have hair and makeup done (and that includes my hair and makeup trial). It's expensive, but nowhere near as bad as some prices I was quoted and I want to look my absolute best.

I also have short curly hair. I debated straightening it all but that wouldn't have looked Like me. in the end I decided to wash and leave it and straighten a couple of bits at the front so would have been silly to get someone else to do it. I also did my own makeup. Day to day I don't wear much and again wanted to look like me. It all depends whether you will be confident with the look you want and how long you think it would take you.

I greatly encourage you to if at all possible have something do your hair and makeup, you'll be stressed and faffy and of anything like me it just "won't" play ball!

As already mentioned, look for your local beauty college. Had a look online tonight and my local college will do hair and make up for about £12 for each. Might go and try them out Smiley smile

I am planning to do my own hair and makeup as are my maid of honour and bridesmaids Smiley smile

I love doing makeup and spend a lot on high end products, so would rather get use out of these. Plus I know what makeup style I like and that I can do Smiley smile. My MOH and BMs all look gorgeous day to day and are good at doing their own makeup and hair. I don't have any specified makeup or hairstyles for them - I have just said I would like them to style themselves however they feel most comfortable as a hairstyle that looks good on my friend with very long blonde hair may not look as good on my sister with very short brown hair.

I have waivered back and forth about whether or not I should get a professional to do hair and makeup but in the end I have decided I have every confidence in my girls to look amazing and as I'm not getting married locally, hair and makeup trials would be tricky.

If it would be cost effective to do your own and you feel comfortable doing it, then go for it! Smiley smile
