Doing your own make up?

*sweetpea*, 15 January, 2012 at 21:24 Posted on Planning 0 13

Good evening all,

I am getting married on an island in the North of Scotland and access to good services is tricky which includes make up artists. Looks like I'll be doing my own and I'm not mega confident at the thought although will defo practice and give it a shot.

Anyone here doing their own make up? Any plans on how to prep for this? I was also wondering if you are going simple or bold?

Ta!

I think I will be doing my own as well - i bought a wedding makeup book from amazon which i think is pretty good and gives some good tips. I am also planning to go to a mac or bobbi brown counter for a bridal makeover to see what they come up with and if i like what they do i will try and copy that. I will be keeping mine relatively simple but need a bit of practice with eye makeup as im not used to wearing eyeshadow!

For me I think i would prefer to do my own makeup as i am never totally happy when someone else does it for me! Even if you are not in the habit of wearing much makeup im sure you will be fine as long as you have a few practices - iv heard the best thing to do is try a few different looks and each time take a photo outside in natural light to see how it really looks. And remember you will need a bit more makeup for the purpose of the photos. Good luck!

Oh I didn't know you could buy books on the subject! I do love a book. I'd thought about going to a make up counter although didn't want to set myself up to fail by being unable to replicate what they do! I guess if I practice enough however! Thanks for the reply!

I'll be doing my own make-up. I went into town with my mum and we went for a 'make over' in House Of Fraser..Im really fussy with my make up and so was never convinced. I ended up looking like Casper the ghost...It was awful!! My mum was the same, they made us pale and washed out looking. Don't get me wrong I don't go for the orange look, but I like a bit of colour on my cheeks! - Im so glad it was all free and courtesy of the Chanel make up counter - Im not entriely convinced about Chanel make up, it felt greasy ? ... No one knows your skin like you, I plan to go for simple, accentuate my eyes with single lashes and sheer on the lips. I love experimenting with make up, I plan to have a make up and hair night with my BMs, hopefully we can give eachother ideas....We'll go easy on the vino though otherwise we could end up looking like a bunch of Scary Marys! x

I got married in July last year. I agonised for months about whether I should do my own make up or not. I don't wear make up an awful lot but with practice I don't think I make a bad effort, but in the end my mum cajoled me into having it done professionally so that I didn't have anything to worry about on the day.

Hand on my heart, I wish that I had stuck to my guns and done my own make up.

It's not that the pro job was bad, but it wasn't anything really special either. It was difficult to get across what I wanted done, especially when it came to eyes and blusher. I was also terribly nervous on the morning of my wedding and I think that if I'd had something like that to focus on, I wouldn't have felt so bad.

I had 3 trials before I was happy with the person I ended up using (I have a lot of issues with dry skin and she seemed to be the only one who listened!), but I still ended up with all the same issues - shiny forehead, etc - that I have with my own make up. And if I'd done it myself I would have been sure of being happy (or only having myself to blame!)

If I did it again, I'd get myself down to Boots, sit down with the No. 7 ladies so that they could help me choose the right foundations and powders, etc., get some nice brushes and then do it myself. Would cost about the same as getting in a pro, but you get to keep all the make up at the end of the day!

Several make up artists round my way offer lessons too - so that might help?

I am hoping that the MUA I have chosen will be able to make me feel pampered by getting it done int he morning and I think she 'gets me' so fingers crossed will end up with the right thing!!

    I did my own.

Didn't want to pay £50+ for someone to do make-up that i wouldnt like and would be wiping off as soon as their back was turned!

I did my own, slightly heavier than work face but not night out face!

I was going to do my own, purchased a truck load of clinique make up then I had a rough 3 weeks with pmt and spots! I know there is no way I would no how to cover them up if they appeared on my wedding day so I've had a make up trial and booked up. I'm not very competent at things like this and rarely wear much make up but I don't have faith in myself not to look like a drag queen lol

I did my own and was very happy with it. Did trials in various places and bought lots of new make - best buys were face and eyeshadow primer. actually got OH to buy me the smashbox primer for christmas! made a huge difference

Brilliant replies thank you! Glad to hear there are lots of you gals doing it yourselves. So true about knowing your own skin and your own style. It's also nice to invest in some new make too! I quite like the idea of 'statement eyes' but I don't want to look like a panda by 8pm. Probably best to get to Frasers, get a lesson and keep it simple! Thanks ladies!

I am planning on doing my own make-up on the day, i had a few trials at different counters to try and find a nice foundation i like. I bought the foundation which was recommeded and due to buying a product Estee Lauder will book you in to see a make-up artist for free to show you how to apply it.

I'm planning on trialling it for our pre-wedding shoot with the photographer to see what it looks like on photos.

I ended up doing my own makeup on the day. I did have a few trials before hand but it wasnt what i imagined. I went out and had my foundation etc matched to my skin tone (if your having a tan on your big day, trial this too when you go to match makeup with you skin) Mac is great makeup. also look for lauren luke tutorials on youtube. she is great and goes step by step though the process x
