Has anyone been? Even since we had a boy at school come in for a term (think he was staying with his grandparents) when I was in primary school I have been desperate to go. I have been saying for years that I want to go for my 30th (which is in January, perfect visiting time I believe, although not till 2017!) but now that we've decided to save hard for a house and I've dropped the bombshell of how much money we'll need to H, he's now saying he doesn't think we should go.

So the question is, is it worth it?

I like it. We've been twice. Must be said though, I didn't venture any further than the beach/pool/restaurant triangle.

I've been once and to be honest dont think I would go again.

It's probably the cheapest place to go in the caribbean and so when we went (I apologise now if this offends anyone) there was alot of heavy drinking by middle aged english men in football kits!

We've recently come back from Antigua and although its not far from the Dominican, its like a different world.

If im spending alot of money on a holiday (which any caribbean holiday will be) I want to be in paradise not feel like I could be in a prettier and hotter version of Spain.

We weren't impressed with it. Mainly because of the hotel we stayed in, it was a 5* and well recommended on Tripadvisor but we found it to be basic and a little dirty with poor service. It wasn't cheap and we didn't feel it was good value for money compared to other holidays we've had. I do know people who love it though so maybe the hotel ruined it for us. We were also advised not to leave the complex unless we were on an excursion and I like to be able to do that so I suppose it depends what you're looking for. Having said that, if I saw a cheap deal I'd probably go back!

I saw none of this to be honest and this would be my WORST nightmare! We stayed in an adults only resort and there was no loud, drunk people around. I know there are places like this there don’t get me wrong as a lot of Americans go for spring break. However if you do your research you can avoid hotels like this. Like with anything you get what you pay for and we paid more than we first planned to get what we wanted. Tripadvisor is good and we looked on there to help rule out hotels that did cater for the spring breakers who tend to be the roudy type and big drinkers.

People there were lovely and couldnt do more to help you. Rooms were clean and hotel was just amazing. You have to remember the people that work there are VERY poor and a tip of a few dollars to them goes a long way so we mad sure we tipped our maid daily and she was lovely. Fresh flowers in our room each day!

As said depends on what you spend so do your reasearch. Smiley smile

I haven't been but it is meant to be very nice. The parents of a friend of mine go there a lot and are planning to retire there -they are from Jamaica but think it's too expensive to retire there.

I went once a few years ago & probably wouldn't go again just because you're pretty confined to the hotel and it's grounds and I like things to do. I went for 2 weeks and as lovely as the hotel was, I was more than ready to come home by the end of it.

OH went there for work and wouldn't go back again. She couldn't go anywhere as a single woman and was accompanied from hotel to work every day! The vast majority never leave their hotel or resort as it just isn't safe. What's the point in that? There has to be safer places you could go!

Aw MrsS it sounds like your DR dreams are being shattered here! Why not make a list of all the things you expected of the DR and perhaps the good ladies of hitched will be able to suggest somewhere?

Not looking great is it! Funny, coz one of the lads at work has been and he loved it. One of the other things we're considering is going back to our honeymoon hotel in Egypt, that was incredible, and a couple we met there said they'd travelled widely and that Egypt was like going to the caribbean but without the long haul

Really? Egypt and the Caribbean don't sound similar to me at all... I'm surprised to hear that!

Just from looking at pictures they don't really look similar to me, but i haven't been to the Dominican Republic so i'll shut up now.
