Done before, but dress shopping questions!

Stazzle, 8 September, 2009 at 09:55 Posted on Planning 0 13

Definitely going over old ground here so apologies, but I need the wisdom of Hitchers!

I've booked my first dress shopping appointment for 20th September - what do I need to know/bring for it? I remember on threads like these before there have been recommendations on what sort of underwear to avoid, etc - any tips like this would be much appreciated!

Also do I need to bring shoes with the kind of heel height I will want to wear on the day, or do I worry about that later once it's all ordered?

All advice greatly received!

Wow Stazzle your very organised. I was totally unprepared the first time I went, I had bright pink undies on. I was rather embarassed. The next time I went I wore white undies and a strapless bra which was probably more sensible. They gave me some shoes to try on, similar to the ones I would be wearing on the day.

If you have seen any dresses in magazines I would take copies, as they will be able to suggest dresses for you. I didnt have a clue what I wanted (still don't) and I think they got a bit frustrated with me lol

    Good luck xx

Also take water and deoderant as it can get quite hot wriggling in and out of all the heavy dresses!

Most shops I went to gave me shoes to try the dresses on with so I wouldn't worry about taking your own.

Are you going with people who can give you honest opinions? Most importantly- have fun! ?

Thanks Moonpig and Jen - will definitely aim for sensible undies then! ?

Yes I'm taking just my mum - I know she will be honest with me.

I've actually already had a peek online at some of the designers the shop stocks and have found a few that I'd definitely like to try on if they have them in stock, so hopefully that will give me a head start! As I say though, they're all pretty different!

Definitely nice undies! And hair up! I got very hot! Eat before, but not too much! Make sure you've got water. Try on things that you don't pick out (if only to shut your mum up!). Have fun! x

    Deodorant wipes are good.

    Bottle of water

    Strapless bra

Nice pants - I wore short type rather than thong

Open mind - if the dress shop ladies suggest something to try on, do it. They know what they're talking about. I dismissed my dress on the hanger but the lady suggested I try it. A lot of dresses don't have "hanger appeal".

Camera - a lot of shops won't let you take pics of you in the dresses but some will. Helps for comparing afterwards as you soon forget what one dress looked like when you have another one on.

Thanks Mrs Spink to be and alison76...that is so true about the 'hanger appeal.' I popped into a bridal shop in Bluewater the other day just out of interest and I thought every single wedding dress there looked hideous!

I will definitely have to remember to keep an open mind!

I really hope they do let me take pics but I know some of them don't unless you've ordered it. Guess I'll have to wait and see!

Just wanted to add to the other posts. I'd really recommend trying on things that you aren't sure of, especially if recommended by the shop assistant. They tend to have an eye for what suits an individual. I tried on loads of dresses before I got my dress and the lady in the shop suggested it but it was silver and completely different to what I thought I was looking for. Anyway, it was available in ivory and I loved it when I tried it on - and it was the cheapest one I tried on!

The first time I went dress shopping I was so dissapointed coz I thought all the dresses looked horrible when hanging on the rails! Try and keep an open mind. I'd wear a strapless bra and sensible pants (I wore a thong and regretted it - I felt really self concious when the assistant was doing up the dresses!). It does get very hot trying on different dresses so I tended to take a break after trying a few on to cool down and chill out!

Most of all - have fun and enjoy the experience!

Oh and one further point.....dress sizes in wedding dresses bear no resemblance to your usual dress size!

When I was trying on dresses I was a size 16 yet sometimes I got in a size 12 dress but couldn't get in a size 20 of a different make. It was a complete lottery!

If you have body hang ups in any way it's good to get this info in to your brain beforehand so you aren't mortified on the day of trying on.

Yep - far too late. A lot of dresses can take up to as much as 6 months from order to arrive.

You can leave it late but you will pay a premium for this and might not have full choice of dresses available.

If it was me, 6 months before would be the absolute latest I would leave for ordering the dress, so you need to start looking before then - it can take time to find the dress of your dreams.

I started looking April 05 for an August 06 wedding. Found "the one" by August 05 and ordered it in January 06 as I wanted to lose some more weight first.

    Hiya,

WEES but also if you are feeling a little nervous about trying on dresses (as I was, I'm not a dressy person) then I did nice make up and did my hair nicely so it gave me a better idea of what the whole outfit would look like.

Also with shoes, I have huge feet so I took a pair of shoes that were approx style + height I wanted.

Strapless bras are not always neccessary as most dresses have a LOT of support, but good idea to take one anyway - and also wear big pants LOL

Most of all have fun - and I think you are quite sensible only taking 1 person with you.

    HTH

I agree. I ended up with something that I never imagined I'd wear!

I'm also going to recommend the good knickers but to be honest I didn't have shoes or anything for my first dress shopping appointment only the fittings.
