Done before but... what are you reading?

Lillythepink, 5 June, 2009 at 20:36 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 51

And what's on your "to read" pile?

I have just finished "The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas" and it made me feel sick. I bought "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies", but WTP had nicked off with it, so I'm looking at the pile of stuff I haven't read yet and it includes:

The Suspicions of Mr Whicher

All Fun & Games till Someone loses an Eye

Company of Liars

I think Company of Liars is going to win - for now...

What about you?

I've just finished The Company of Liars - I really enjoyed it, but was disappointed in the end. Not massively, but a little.

Am off out to buy more books tomorrow, so will look forward to picking up some recs here.

I'm reading Temples of Delight, which was lent to me by my bosses wife. It's sort of black comedy.

I'm currently reading Scarpetta by Patricia Cornwell, it's better than her last few have been. Have also got a bunch of Karin Slaughters that I've just bought on the 'to read' pile, her last one Tryptich was brilliant. Am also ordering Piers Morgan's new book because I loved his last two.

Ooh, how could I forget, will of course be ordering Luxury, by a certain lady we know and love, for my holibobs.

I've just started The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton, about which I keep hearing excellent reviews, and am dipping into Jigs and Reels (short stories by Joanne Harris - have loved all her other books).

Before that I read Tell me Something by Adele Parks, which was a nice easy but enjoyable read, and Mercy by Jodi Picoult which I liked but prefer some of her other stories.

I liked The Suspicions of Mr Whicher, but bought it before I realised the age of the murder victim. Not ideal for those with small children [shudder]

I am suffering from pregnancy overemotional disease at the mo, so am reading nothing but Georgette Heyer, PG Wodehouse and Terry Pratchett in rotation. Unreal world comfort reading all the way for me!

I've got two books by (I think) Andrea Newman and I'm re-reading them. The first - A Sense of Guilt - was made into a TV series in the 80s with Trevor Eve in the role of the cad Felix Cramer (an author, married, aged 40) who sleeps with his best friend Richard's 18 year old daughter and then gets her pregnant. Her mother arranges for her to have a termination but they don't tell Richard. Who of course finds out .... assaults Felix .... Felix's wife founds out ..... I've ruined the plot now! ?

I'm now reading the second - A Gift of Poison - which is the sequel. By this point everybody knows what everybody else has done and relationships break down left, right and centre. A few new characters are thrown into the mix and they're all shagging each other...

I mean it's utter, UTTER 80s nonsense but hey - it sends me to sleep after a few pages. ?

I have just bought Testimony by Anita Shreve, which I started last night, and The Secret Scripture by Sebastian Barry, which I have yet to begin. BOGOF from WH Smith. I recently finished The Suspicions of Mr Whicher, which I wanted to like more than I did, if that makes any sense.

Whilst in WHS, I spied the new Sarah Waters, which I will be purchasing asap.

I'm reading "Sushi for Beginners" by Marian Keyes at the moment. It was 2.99 in the supermarket last week and I quite enjoy her books. I've only just starting reading it but so far so good.

Before that I was reading America by Stephen Fry which was very interesting and in my opinion far more enjoyable than the television series.

Been off work for 2 weeks so had a splurge of reading! Most from our bookswap shelf at work so may not be new books.

The Chocolate Lovers Club, chick lit but not too fluffy, can't remember the author but sure I have read some of hers before.(Carole Matthews)

The Woods - Harlen Coben, really enjoying his books at the moment.

Carl Hiaason - Double Whammy - great book, laughed all the way through, just bought Tourist Season for my to read pile.

Birdsong - Sebastian Faulks - been on my to read pile forever, finally got round to it but can't say it changed my life!

This Charming Man - Marian Keyes - always enjoy her books.

To read - Twilight, recommended by a friend, Elegance of the Hedgehog - Muriel Barbery, City of Thieves - David Benioff plus a couple of shorter books Across England on a Milk Float or something.

Not sure which to read next.

I've just read 'Possession: A Romance' by A.S. Byatt, it's the best book I've read in a long time, highly recommended. I couldn't put it down by the time I got half way through.

I'm currently reading 'Faithless' by Karin Slaughter. It's shite. Are her others better?

I have a massive pile of books to be read although the books are in the baby's room and I'm not going to go in and risk her waking up again ?. From what I remember there's
    Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman,
When Will There be Good News by Kate Atkinson,
Notes from an Exhibition by Patrick someone
The Last Witchfinder by James Morrow
The Kate Morton book that someone mentioned earlier. I liked her last one.

The film is the reason I'm reading the book. It's a HUGE book and I'm just getting into flash backs of Eli's back story. I'd highly recomend it if you loved the film.

The Conservationist by Nadine fucking Gordimer. It's truly boring, absolutely not my sort of thing, and am only pushing on with it because I'm supposed to read it for a book club.

I am also rereading Fever Pitch.

I'm reading for work, The Natural by Bernard Mal.... can't remember. Have just read a book called Bad Blood, abotut he Tour de France. Then I have to read The Fight by Norman Mailer. I've also read Little Girls in Pretty Boxes by Joan Ryan, and... sundry other books about sport. I'm averaging about a book and a half a day atm ? However, the huge bonus is I also get to reread Fly-by-Night and The Team by KM Peyton, which are beyond awesome.

The Unbearable Lightness of Scones by Alexander McCall Smith. It's one of his Scotland Street collection and it's perfect for me just now as I only get five minutes here and there to read due to having a miniature hurricane living in my house. ?
