downhearted with diy bouquet

okikokikate, 4 July, 2013 at 14:22 Posted on Planning 0 17

Started off with the best will in the world. Wired all brooches, florist taped the wires. Tried bunching them up, didnt like it. Tried threading it through fake hydrangea, didnt like the bumpiness.

Chopped wires down and poked through brown oasis, better shape but lots of gaps. Have glue gunned the gaps and gone glitter crazy but I'm not in love with it. Feel like crying. Have used family brooches and ones picked up from charity shops etc.

Not sure what to do!

Flash? I know you don't like it but it might be easier to see how to help.

I filled my gaps with pearls/beads/crystals, wired the same way as the brooches.

Here is a family pic, which I have annotated (badly). If you click it, it will open as a bigger image. You can see that a very large chunk of what was on display was actually bunches of beads (of various kinds).

    Hi Kate ?

I also made my own bouquet out of buttons and brooches. I struggled to get mine together once I'd wired them all until I found one of these:

Covered the oasis with white tissue paper before poking thru.

Will try and upload pics to somewhere on net then post links, bear/bare with me x

Didnt think of beads...thats a possibility.

A collar will be needed eventually whetheit be ribbon loops or the type linked previously.

Want to sort main out first before doing the handle.

I did chop part of oasis off before starting to make it flatter at the bottom.

The wires poking thru by handle are just wires stuckin, not from actual brooch ste,ms.

    Don't panic I think it's looking great.

I just think you need something to cover the bottom section and to make the holding bit pretty. Have you thought about having feathers around the base of maybe some loops of ribbon to make it look more finished and to hide the structure?

Fer what it's worth, I'm not usually a fan of brooch bouquets, but I think yours is really sweet!

I think it's coming along great. I really think that if you finish off the bottom it might make all the difference to you Smiley smile Get it nicely finished off and hopefully you'll wonder what you were worrying about!

Ok, so I've ordered some beads and white wire and hopefully will start to see an improvement.

I really do appreciate the help and kind words. Sometimes you just need some guidance and reassurance.

Going to buy some ribbon for underneath.

Not sure if handle is going to be sturdy enough. Its just a bunch of wires shoved in, and a flower stem shoved in and glued.

You can buy this stretchy, slightly spongy, slightly sticky florist tape from Hobbycraft. I wrapped shedloads around the wires, both to bulk them out, to support them and to cushion them slightly.

I hate the colour and smell of my hands after wiring...cant wait....yuck

My main concern is the ball falling off the things ive shoved in. Coz i chopped the wites so they stop insode the ball somewhere. They dont actually go through. Will tape and tape til i can tape no more and then do a wiggle test and pray!

Others may disagree but I think this is a mistake. It's an Oasis ball? So what's stopping the brooches sliding out now? I did this and they were all over the place. Glued them onto the Oasis, but the surface layer came off. I ended up rewiring all mine. What are the wires currently in the stem part?

I know exactly how you feel. I am having the same problem with my bridesmaids button bouquets. Just feel they are too floppy! I am hoping that the bouquet holders I have bought off ebay will help. Have you tried this?

I put them all in, then took out one by one and superglued them in. The wires are just my left over wires that i shoved in from the bottom.

I agree with you ForTheLoveOfMrsBr, oasis/bouquet holders aren't secure enough to take the weight of the brooches etc. better to be hand wired/shaped.
