Dress alterations

Roll on July!, 8 March, 2011 at 21:01 Posted on Planning 0 2

I've picked up my dress from the bridal shop (yay!) and am about to order the bridesmaid dresses (finally - long story) but all will need shortening a little and taking in on the bust. When I phoned the seamstress to get an idea of how long this would take and the cost for the alterations for all 3 (bearing in mind I had been quoted by the bridal shop that alterations for my dress could cost between £50 and £150) they weren't able to give me an indication. I know every dress is different and it is really difficult to quote without seeing them but as time is tight on ordering the bridesmaid dresses I wanted to make sure there was enough time for them to be altered and the cost wouldn't be extortionate.

Could you give me an idea how much your alterations cost and how long they took? Otherwise if its not possible to get the bridesmaid dresses done in time we'll have to look for high street ones I guess. Wedding is end of July this year.

Mine will be ready on Friday (woowoo!!) after 2 weeks. It is costing £50 to take it up a few inches and move the straps (I've lost a bit too much weight since buying it and the straps no longer sit right- oops!). I didn't use the shops recommendation though, I know a few people who have used the lady I'm using and I think she is more than reasonable...

I'm using a local lady - costing £85 to have the straps taken up and the hem turned up - 3 layers of skirt plus chiffon panels. Had a fitting on Saturday and she tells me it will be ready in 10 days. I think most will need to see the dresses before quoting as the time and work involved can vary considerably depending on the syle.

My daughter had hers altered by a dressmaker as she is also like Rachel - lost too much weight so the bodice part of the dress was hanging off her. The lady took in the corset at the sides, repositioned all the beading detail near the lace up bit so it all matches and took up the straps and charged £40 which we thought was a very good price.
