Dress arriving 5weeks before wedding?

kfair, 9 February, 2012 at 14:15 Posted on Planning 0 7

Hi Ladies,

Im having a bit of a panick attack!!!!

Ive just phoned my dress shop and asked for an arrival date for my dress, wanted to know because I have to pay the balance when it arrives.

They said it isn't due in until may, I get married June 20th in Cyprus so fly out 12th June. Im really panicking, is this normal? Ive started losing weight so the dress will definatley need altering width and legnth.

I would be worried, it's definitely cutting it fine - when did you order it?

Don't you have me panicking now! My dress comes in in early-mid may and I get married 9th June, the lady in the shop seems to think it won't be a problem and she knows there will be some definite alterations...that won't stop me calling them every week starting in April though lol.

Alterations can be done quite quickly so don't worry too much about that.

I would be on their case for a definite date though and pushing for earlier.

It's not really up to the shop when it arrives as it is the designers who control the manufacturing. You should have been advised of deliver dates when you ordered - did they know you would need it for the 12th and not the 20th?

Wow, that has taken a long time to arrive. Our dresses take 12 weeks.

I'm sure 5 weeks will be plenty of time to do the alterations. As soon as it does arrive go to the shop straight away to be measured so they can start the alterations.

    Don't panic!!

My dress arrived 31st Sept and we were married Nov 9th, so a similar time frame! I had 3 fittings, plus the initial 'try on' which I did the day after it arrived (this is to make sure it is the right dress with no major issues and didn't involve the seamstress). I had 1 fitting a week and the dress was ready 10 days before the wedding so there was plenty of time!

Keep calm. The shop and the seamstress are experienced and will manage their workload accordingly. You may need to be really flexible on your fitting dates though so be prepared for this.
