Dress dilemma

Lisa sofa, 2 October, 2016 at 08:45 Posted on Planning 0 4

Hi Lovely Ladies,

I'm new to the forum and newly engaged eeek !

I am so excited about planning our wedding and finding loads of ideas on here ?,

So I'm hoping you can offer me some advice, I am 43 and getting married for the first time. Yesterday I went out looking at dresses with my mum, perfect girly day planned !! I couldn't help feeling a bit old as a first time bride and got to thinking that should influence my choice of dress, I loved the more elegant, straight Grecian style of dress but was also rather taken with the fuller skirts, so now I'm even more confused, I don't want to look like I'm trying to be a 20 something bride!!

how did everyone else make their choices? Xxx

I've not bought my dress yet but I've ordered a shorter tulle skirt which plan to put with something a little different on top. I'm aiming for something a little quirky and modern this time. It's my second wedding and I'm 33. I want what I feel comfortable in and more me, not what everyone is expecting me to be in. My advice would be the same for you and don't worry what anyone else thinks.

My aunt had her first wedding at 45 and had the full white wedding. The people that had comments to make were never going to be supportive. It's your day so don't ever let anything limit you, be it size, age or type of wedding. Well that's my opinion anyway.

    Congratulations! How exciting!

So I will be 38 when we get married in June next year, so I guess you could call me an older first time bride too! I think it definitely depends on the shops you go to as to the experience you have - I went to two shops where they just kept putting me in the standard white strapless numbers which did nothing for me & which I definitely didn't want! I then ended up going to a shop on my own in a whim where I could have bought all 10 of the dresses the lady showed me, so I think sometimes you just need to find that person who's going to truly listen to what you want, at the same time as being able to see what will suit you.

I originally planned to buy a shorter tea length dress, but they didn't suit me on, & liked a lot of the grecian style dresses instead - Justin Alexander had some beautiful ones. The actual dress I've ended up with though has a HUGE skirt, not what I thought I'd buy at all but I LOVE IT!

I'd definitely recommend trying a few more shops, & I promise you, when you find the one you'll know - try not to restrict yourself to not trying on the dresses you think you won't like, or that won't suit you, & enjoy yourself above all - you're never too old!

Pick whatever you like that suits you. Ignore everyone else's opinions on whether you should or shouldn't wear something just because of age. Aspenlady and I are in our 50's. The nice simple A line everyone implied I should have didn't suit me at all and I wore a mermaid. Assaid you need a sales assistant that listens buy at the same time we often come away ith something completely different to what we expected to buy so keep an open mind. Good luck with the hunt and give us a flash when you have chosen or if you want even more opinions on any on a short list.

I was even told maybe I should Have a 'nice two piece suit'. I don't think so. It's my wedding and I wore what I wanted.
