Dress dilemma - advice please

SecretlyEloped, 24 November, 2013 at 17:00 Posted on Planning 0 16

I saw a dress today that I love. I went to a sample sale thinking it would be affordable but I fell in love with a dress costing £1600 in the sale! It's WAY over my initial budget of 700. On the plus side it doesn't need any alterations. It's Sassi Holford Pippa BTW.

I'm worried I might not find something else I like as much, and I only have 6 months to go. My OH doesn't know the price (he knows it's over budget!) but he said that he wants me to be happy and if I really love it then maybe just go for it. I don't know what to do........all advice welcome........

Thanks x

    Hi

price aside, if its 'the one' than go for it!

You will only end up comparing any other dress to it.

I read a quote on pinterest "never give up on something that you can't go a day without thinking about"

I agree with AJB - as long as it's not going to put you in a really difficult position financially, just go for it. You'll only get the chance to do this once!

Have you looked online for cheaper ones, maybe another sample sale or look on pre-loved they may have it on there cheaper! Otherwise try more dresses on and if that is all you still think about/compare against go for it!!

What cherrybloom said! I could never have justified the extra spends on the dress. But could you save elsewhere in the budget to make up the difference?

I set up email alerts on ebay, preloved, sellmyweddingdress.co.uk, even gumtree ..etc and after just a few weeks I got my dream dress preowned & within my budget.

I also found that different bridal shop prices ranged massively for the same dress - one shop in my hometown quoted me £1995 for the same dress that I could get in other shops in Manchester for £1095. Maybe you could try ringing around? Good luck, it's a beautiful dress!

Looks a bit like a split then between "go for it" and "find the/another dress cheaper" which is kind of how I feel!

Have looked on eBay, preloved and gumtree but it's not there. Sellmyweddingdress has one but its too small for £1500. Obviously if I did get it preowned in my size I would prob need it re-altered as well *head now spinning*

Why oh why did I try it on - silly me for not checking price first Smiley sad

Tell them your budget and see if they can do a better price . my dress was full price and they ordered it in with a discount of 180 quid so they can do it ! afterall its a sample they will want to sell it if they get the opportunetly even if you can get it for 1000

If it was a matter of a couple of hundred pounds i would say go for it but it's more than double your budget! from a quick google search it looks like a fairly simple lace dress which there are many of out there so i am sure you will be able to find something similar that is more in line with your budget. if you really don't think you'll find anything that you love as much then have a think about what you would have to cut out of your wedding to spend the extra £900 on the dress which might help you focus on where you would prefer to spend the money.

Ooh that's tricky. I'd say try a some more on and see if you can find something else you love. When I was looking there were a few that I loved, but I had an overwhelming feeling when I'd found The One.

If after trying some more, you keep going back to that one, you can always try and find it cheaper as others have mentioned, or find the extra money in the budget somehow.

    Good luck!

Hello, I'm a fellow Sassi Holford bride - my dress is the So Sassi Kelsey. The Pippa is gorgeous. I can't understand why it's still £1,600 in the sample sale?! My dress was in the sample sale, is literally in pristine condition as it's a small sample size and apparently not many people have tried it on, and it was £800. The dress shop I got it from is an expensive one too.

Did you try haggling with them in store? Maybe offer £1000 and see where you can go from there, as I doubt they would even give you a chance if you offered £700. Is there anywhere else you can save, e.g. have a friend do your hair or do your own make up?

I'd agree with the haggling for the price in the sale. If you don't ask, you wont know. Although if they say no, and it's the dress for you, then I'd say go for it!

Firstly, thanks for all the replies Smiley smile

I went in the shop again today and subtly asked about whether they could bring the price down a bit for me as I just can't afford 1600 but the woman was quite firm that the price was not going to budge one bit. I feel disappointed as I had decided I was willing to pay up to 1000 for that dress (assuming I could sell it easily for at least 300 and thus be on budget!) but clearly it's not going to happen.

I can't really afford to move much else in the wedding budget - I can't find anything that I can get for less than I budgeted! I can't get friends/family to help with make up etc as were eloping, we've budgeted midweek prices for TOG, minimum for registry ceremony, no car, party few weeks afterwards for £14 per head buffet (no room hire fee). The dress was the biggest thing except for honeymoon accommodation (we CANNOT miss the honeymoon - not an option!!)

I think I need to do more dress shopping and look further afield, and I've also set up alerts on ebay and preloved. I just keep thinking about that dress!!!!!!

I'm south midlands way (don't want to be too specific in case anyone knows me!) but there are a few stockists within about an hour of me. I decided to take a day off thinking about dresses to hopefully make me think more rationally! I will look around some more dress shops near me and take a trip to another Sassi stockist. I've also created a strict Christmas budget to help me not get silly spending on presents/food/parties etc. so hopefully I might even be able to save up more money. I'll let you know how it goes...x
