Dress dilemma - and no time left!

cinnamon009, 10 April, 2014 at 10:39 Posted on Planning 0 19

Most of the bridal shops I have been to have told me that in order for the alterations etc. to be done I need to be ordering in the next week or so for it to be ready by September. Apparently, after a quiet 2013, 2014 is going to be a busy one.

And I just can't decide. Help!!

There are two dresses (I don't know how to flash or I would flash the website shots of them) that I like for very different reasons. One is the Maggie Sottero Alma. (/maggie-sottero?style=22923) The other is the Sottero & Midgeley Lola (/sottero-and-midgley?style=4SS827CS). To set the scene I want a 'red carpet' style wedding. It will be black tie and cocktail dresses. As part of my job and my OH job, we attend balls on a regular basis so I'm used to wearing long evening gowns and have a stack of them so for my wedding wanted something a step beyond what I would wear as a ball gown.

After ages of trying on lots of different styles, I liked the Alma almost immediately. It fit lovely and draped beautifully. But as wedding dresses go it is quite simple. In a different colour and without a train and I would definitely wear it to a ball. This is probably why I felt comfortable in it. The Lola on the other hand is so intricately beaded and embellished it has the real wow factor. But I felt fat in it (my friends said the Lola looked amazing). However, the other problem is the Lola sample has only been made in a gold colour. And I definitely did not want a gold wedding dress. It is only done in gold and white (not ivory) and white can be a difficult colour to wear so I can’t see how it would look in white and would be buying a dress in a colour I haven't seen close up.

I can’t stop looking at photos of the Lola, it is so beautiful but would be nervous about wearing it. The Alma I wouldn’t. My friends think I would regret taking the opportunity to wear a dress I wouldn’t ever wear again. I essentially want the alma style but with more embellishment on it.

Aaagh. This is really stressing me out.

Personal opinion but I love the Lola in gold. No good if you didn't feel nice in it though.

Do you have pictures of you in them?

    Hello!

Both very beautiful dresses and very different. I think the second one is more red carpet. I tried it on actually and it looked awful on me, but totally stunning in these pictures. It's not white all over as it has the pewter to break it up. What sort of colouring are you?

The first one is lovely, but much more simple and I think you (from what you have said above) will regret not getting the other one.

Both of those dresses are beautiful. Do you prefer the Lola dress? If the Lola is the one, you could ring round a few shops to see if they have the Lola in ivory?

Your Alma dress is VERY similar to mine - Mori Lee 6778. It's beautiful.

BUT the Lola made me gasp. I'd love to have worn something like that but our wedding is a very relaxed informal garden wedding.

The Lola's white version has a pewter accent, which will take the edge off the white. I think that one is much more suitable for a black tie do. As for it making you feel fat - do you have weight you want to lose? You will feel different if/when you do. If you have no weight to lose and there are any bits of the dress which are clinging in the wrong places when you are nearer to the wedding, the seamstress can alter the shape/fit/hang to fix it? Honestly - that Lola dress is STUNNING.

Finally - don't panic about the shops getting on your back about timings, honestly, they will take your order even if you don't make your decision for another month. They are just scared that if you don't place your order now that something else, somewhere else, will catch your eye. They are close to a sale and want to close it.

I LOVE Lola - but then I would - it's very similar to my Maggie dress Janelle. It's not actually Gold - but a very light gold satin layer with ivory tulle over. It's very pale indeed but not white or ivory. I got my sample swatch through a while ago and was very relieved because like you I wasn't sure how gold it would be and I didn't want gold either. The embellishment is described as pewter but it's silver and clear beads. But it seems this is the colour you've tried on and you weren't keen. The white will be very white. It's a stunning dress, but you also didn't feel right in it. I assume it wasn't your size which means it wouldn't have fitted as well as you need it to. Your dress would fit perfectly, but you have to be sure it's the right dress. It's an expensive mistake if it's not.

How would you feel if you were told you can't have the Lola. You've left it too late and they can't now get it for you? Would you be happy with Alma or would you be gutted? That might give you your answer.

The Alma is a lovely dress too - but if it's too simple for what you're looking for then it's not the one.

    This is Janelle

Could be worth looking at this. It comes in Ivory as well as the light gold not white so that might be your answer. I went for light gold as I didn't want ivory as it's so light these days Smiley smile

They are both lovely. I didnt even realise the 2nd one was gold, ha, I had to go back and look again. I prefer the first one, but I like the simplicity of it, but if you prefer the 2nd one, and it does "wow" then go for it, in my opnion the gold isn't to OTT.

Hun look at what you've said. I think you've possibly made up your mind here. Talk to the bridal store. You will be amazed at what can be done. I see the alma dress with embellished shoulders like this:

and scattered beading/crystals across the bottom.

best of luck with whatever you choose hun xxx

Can I play Devils Advocate for a minute and suggest that as you can't decide between the two then you might not have actually found 'the one' yet? I wouldn't worry too much about the time, most of the dress shops that I went to told me that I had to order it early, but in fact, you can still order something up until about three months to go - although you would probably have to pay a premium charge for it as it will be a 'rush order'.

There are so many dresses out there that you must be able to find something that has everyting you want.

If you want the wow factor what do you think of this: https://www.ronaldjoyce.com/collections/ronald-joyce/67006. It's called Beatrice. I tried this on at the wedding warehouse in Ascot and fell in love with it. In the end, I went with something else (I'm having a country garden style day), but would definately have gone for this one if i was having a red carpet event - I felt like a movie star in it!

Good luck and let us know what you decide x

    Thanks everyone for your comments.

The picture on the website of Lola is it in white. The gold colour isn't shown on the website - although really beautiful I wanted white or ivory. I asked if they could get hold of a sample in white and apparently all the samples made of Lola so far have been made in gold to showcase it in gold so there aren't any samples of this particular dress in white. They can get hold of another dress in white but I would have to take the risk of the lola looking like I want it to.

When I originally tried Alma on I did ask if they could add embellishment and was told by the shop it would be difficult as the chiffon is very sheer and it would therefore weigh it down too much and it would lose the draping effect and the way it hangs. I'm not a seamstress but I could imagine this being true as it is very light weight wise and floats. If I was having a summer wedding I would definitely have it.

Another thought I have just had - someone was asking me what I will do with my dress after the wedding. The Alma I would sell. I would struggle to let go of the Lola as I would want to keep getting it out and looking at the beautiful designs on it.

I do want to lose weight as I'm a stone over my 'normal' weight so ordering Lola could be the kick up the bum I need!!!

Sounds to me like you're really hankering after the Lola - you keep coming back to it and don't want to let it go. Personally, I think both dresses are lovely, but Alma says Riviera and Lola Red Carpet - two different types of glamorous, so it depends what you want.

I'd definitely go for the Lola. The Alma is beautiful, but if you wear ball gowns often, it's no more "special". My Maggie dress was diamond white which is an off-white colour, so it isn't as striking as pure white. I did feel more comfortable with a bit of a tan though. Having said that, I'd class the dress in the picture as more silvery because of the embellishments. Think about whether you have a silvery ballgown and whether that suits your colouring.

Like the majority of people have already said, I'd go for the Lola - it's stunning and very red carpet! When I found the dress I loved, I wanted the version with a shorter train. The woman in the shop told me that no-one stocked that version and I'd have to 'imagine' what it'd look like! I wasn't convinced and I didn't want to take that risk so I googled and called other nearby shops and eventually found one which had the exact dress in store. It was a good thing too because it was a completely different fit to the original dress I'd tried. Anyway, I'd advise you to do the same because you might find a shop which stocks the white so you can see what it looks like yourself.

    Thanks everyone.

Well I have decided to go for the Lola!!! Its so beautiful I just need someone else's body to go in it but it is giving me the determination to lose the weight I wanted to. Nothing like a bit of pressure.....

Feels exciting now. A bit more real. ?
