Dress disaster help please!!

MsCoffeeCrazy, 7 October, 2014 at 17:58 Posted on Planning 0 19

Hi ladies, To keep a very long and stressful story short, my bridesmaid dresses arrived a few weeks back and my second bridesmaid tried hers on at the weekend. She got into it but it was insanely right, I struggled for ten minutes to get the zip up and it eventually did up after she took off her bra and I'd struggled for a few more minutes. She's also recently lost weight which she is very likely to put back on, (external circumstances changing her eating habits). Because of the shape of the dress luckily it still looked really nice with just a little bit of squashing around the chest. She loved it. I was hoping to exchange it for a bigger size but the shop no longer stock them and my only option was to return which I didn't want to do as my other bridesmaid and I love the dresses. I'm now very, very concerned that she won't fit into the dress on the day. Has anyone got any ideas of how I can tackle this if we can't get her into it? She's going through a huge amount with her family at the moment and being a bridesmaid means very much to her so I don't want to upset her. But I'm concerned with the drama it will probably cause on the day. I'm really looking forward to just having that morning with her, my other bridesmaid and my mum I don't want it that time to be ruined with dress issues. This is one in a long list of things that has gone wrong so far and I'm become close to hysterical! Please advise.

Dressmaker/corset back as a last resort. If you are talking an inch or two (which you are) then it is definitely doable.....and breathe!!

Relax - you've got a whole year to sort this out!

She's not an idiot and would have been able to tell that the dress is on the small side. So chances are she'll try and keep her weight down as she knows she needs to fit into it. Revisit the situation 6 months before the big day and if it doesn't fit you can get a dressmaker to sort it out or get new dresses.

No point stressing about it now.

Thank you MOMB but I don't think it can be corseted. It's a bit of a strange dress, I can't include a pic so please look at the link below.

I've asked her to try not to put any weight on, I did it as sensitively as I could but there's not really a nice way to say it! She was okay about it, she just brushed it off and said she will fit into the dress and to stop worrying. To be honest she's got so much going on at the moment I think my wedding is the least of her worries. Maybe I can get it taken out worst comes to worst. I think I might just be overreacting because of the other things that have gone a bit awry. I'm a natural worrier! Thanks everyone x

Honestly it is fixable for a whole size on that dress. A dressmaker will be able to sort it and as lots have said, a year is a long time.

Ebay/Amazon... you can find anything on there, I even found a brand new limited 80s Ann summers dress to match one I already had and that was 30 years out of stock

What size do you need? The coast site has upto size 16 in stock?

I need a 12 but I was given debenhams gift cards specifically for the bridesmaid dresses so I needed to get it from there. Apparently they no longer stock them x

Are you still able to take the 10 back? If it was me I would be tempted to use the vouchers on other wedding items e.g. Shoes, jewellery and order the dress from Coast. If she would look better and feel more comfortable in the 12 and you be saved an extra stress it might be worth it. Or would a Coast store let you exchange sizes? It might be worth asking. Maybe approach a dressmaker now and inquire about the it's of altering the current dress and how much you would fain. This might give you a clearer picture. Hope it all gets sorted.

I agree - take the 10 back and use the debenhams gift cards for other things - even if you use them for your Christmas shopping this year - and put the cash that you would have spent on those things towards getting the size 12 directly from coast. Of, if you can afford to, keep the 10, and get the 12, then you know you have got all bases covered, and you can ebay the spare one off later. And for the next 9 months, no one has to worry!

Alternatively, if she says she will fit into it, and not to worry, then let her have that chance to do just that.

My MoH is due to give birth 4 weeks before my wedding.....needless to say, the dress I had previously bought isn't going to be anywhere CLOSE to fitting. Am I stressing? Nope, we will cross that bridge nearer the time, and all will be well, whatever the outcome....as long as SHE is comfortable, and I am getting married!

Please don't put any undue stress on yourself over this - otherwise, by the time you get married, you will be a wreck on what is supposed to be the most amazing day of your life.

    Beautiful dress by the way!

Get the 12. Do not put this pressure on your BM. It isn't fair to ask her to limit her food intake just to fit (both metaphorically and literally) into your wedding. That would be very upsetting and triggering to me and maybe it is to her too, you know? If you care about her, surely you can re-jig the budget. That's my two pence worth.

If all else fails, there is spanx!

Yes its not glamourous, but they work and they take you down a size and to be honest, they're actually quite comfy!

You say you were given the giftcards specifially for the BM dresses, but in all honesty who is going to know if you buy if from another shop so you can get the size 12 and use the giftcard form something else, the giftcard will simply be re-imbursing any money spent on getting the new frockage elsewhere.

I'm sure everything will be ok though, you have plenty of time to sort it out and the important thing is you're getting married!!!!! ?

Definitely get the 12 from Coast. Its a very easy fix and the debenhams vouchers can easily be spent on other things and then you don't have to worry about your bridesmaid not fitting into the dress and you are not putting extra pressure on her to lose weight over the next year.

I've actually tried that dress on and it's lovely.

That dress is stunning - I can see why you chose it! absolutely love it!

I agree with everyone else that the main thing here is to reduce stress on you (since things are already going wrong so far) and also for your friend who sounds like she is having a bit of a time of it at the moment.

Use the Debenhams card to buy your accessories/shoes/thank you presents etc. and get the 12 from Coast. It isn't worth the hassle to stick to your guns on something like this and worry yourself silly when there is a way out of the problem.

    xx

I totally agree with buying the 12 from coast and using the Debenhams gift card for other things. I don't think it's fair on her to have that pressure and I don't think I would want that worry if I was you.

    Lovely dress.

You could try taking the dress you have into the coast shop and seeing if they will swap for another size. If you say you lost the receipt, no faults but you just need a size up they might do it. My friend recently bought a quiz dress in debenhams and swapped it in the quiz shop

Thanks everyone you've all come up with helpful suggestions, I'm going to try and get in touch with Coast and see if I can exchange it. I think I may have been overreacting, as I say I've had a fair few setbacks and those combined with arguing with the fiancé about wedding stuff and his lack of help and work stress has left me teetering on the edge of a bridal breakdown. But as you say, at the end of the day I'm marrying the one for me and that's all that matters. I've decided to take a step away from the planning for a while and take some time to get some perspective. Thank you everyone x

I spotted that very dress on Debenhams website today. I don't know how tall your bridesmaid is but they still carry that dress in petite

as long as she is not 6ft....

You have enough time to sort things so don't panic.

I get married 4 weeks tomorrow and my bridesmaids dresses no longer fit so I have had to buy new. Have a look at the seams in the dress to see how big they are and if they can be let out. Don't rely on bridesmaids loosing weight to fit into a dress. If you can get bigger do that and have it taken in.
