Dress disaster - I feel like crying!

BoroKate, 2 August, 2010 at 19:49 Posted on Planning 0 30

I 've just got back from my final dress fitting and my dress is still too small. I bought my dress from a factory outlet as I'm on a tight budget and the owner assured me it could easily be let out to fit me. I've lost weight since buying the dress, had a bigger panel put in and the sides taken out but the zip at the bottom still won't fasten by about half an inch.

I know half an inch doesn't seem like a lot but I 've been dieting for ages so I'm on the slow weight loss phase of about 1lb a week and I know that it won't make that much difference in 4 weeks. The seamstress has suggested getting a large bow to tie at the bottom of the panel so that the zip is hidden. I don't want the bloody zip to be hidden, I just want it to fasten!

I'm sat here absolutely distraught. Your wedding day is supposed to be the one day in your life that you feel and look amazing but how can I do that when I'll be worried about people noticing the flaming dress doesn't even fit.

I'm so annoyed with myself. I feel like I've compromised by buying a budget dress and it's going to ruin my day.

Sorry for the woe is me post but i needed to vent x

Oh BK, I'm feeling your pain. I havne't got anything to say that would help but didn't want to read and run. Have a? and a ? and hope you feel better soon x

could you keep going with the weight loss and keep the bow idea as a back up. Or is it too late to change the zip into a corset and that way you could get away with that half inch?

I am in a similiar position as I brought my dress from an outlet but I am having mine changed into a corset back-purely because I prefer them. Is that an option?x

If it's only half an inch, then I don't think you need to worry. Just carry on with what you have been doing so far. Keep the option of a bow in mind just in case, but you can easily shift that little bit in 4 weeks. I can guarantee you will be so busy in the last couple of weeks and probably won't feel hungry. I don't - I'm hardly eating and think I must be running on adrenalin. At my last fitting, the vanity panel wouldn't fasten to the dress, but I haven't worried about it as loads of people say they lose weight naturally in the last few weeks.

Have you tried magic knickers? best of luck! i bought from an outlet too but i bought a dress that fitted a tad snugly as i did not want to lose much in the way of weight and if i do lose too much weight i will have the back changed to corset

Oh no! Don't be sad and cross with yourself - there is still time!

As the others have said - is it possible to have the fastening on the back of the dress changed to something that's not a zip so there'd be a little more give?

OR in the week before the wedding, could you go for a seaweed wrap at a spa - they have a temporary effect of up to 1 inch weight loss wherever you are treated!

Good luck BK - don't panic - this will fall into place and you'll look stunning on your big day!

My dress is already a corset back but has a 6 inch zip at the bottom of the corset. I could get the zip took out and have the corset continuing down - thank you so much for that suggestion vickstix.

I think I'm going to leave it for 2 weeks and then try it on again to see if I have made any progress. If not I think I'll go with this option.

Thanks for the support (even my SIL who's been a PITA for the last few months has been supportive about it so at least one good thing has come out of this). I just wish I didn't have this stupid worry hanging over my head this close to the wedding ?

Aw Kate I don't know what to say ?. Corset backs are amazing so can you consider that option? I wouldn't have managed to fit into any dress because my weight is so up and down (more up than down) so a corset was my life saver.

I totally understand why you are feeling the way you do but you'll always look amazing regardless of whether you have a bow or not.

    x

p.s. I'm half way through your order so won't be long. ?

I agree with the girls, keep the bow in mind, half an inch is do-able especially with the stress induced appetite loss, as Zippy says! Don't be sad, you'll look amazing on your wedding day xx

I had a weight lose wrap and I don't know if it works but I thought so for a short term so it's definitely worth a try because at the very least it's nice and relaxing which is a lovely treat in the run up to the big day. x

Aw Kate, big hugs for you!!!!!

I agree with the other girls, carry on with your diet/exercise as you have been doing and you never know. The bow idea can be your backup plan though.

Also, please remember how well you've done with your weight loss and don't think that is all been pointless if you can't fit into the dress anyway - its been v worthwhile and you should be v v proud of yourself.

Chin up and hope you feel better about it soon.

aw pet. I hope you feel better soon. You have 1 month. is there any way you could maybe pop the spanx on 2 see if it would help, or a corset maybe. Other than that can you think of maybe a kinda detox thing...they can get like 4 or 5 pounds off in a week? well so they say.

OK I'm crying now, just got off the phone to my mam and she's being so supportive offering different suggestions on how we can work round it and telling me not to worry. My mam usually looks on the downside of everything so it means so much to me that she's showing she cares.

Thanks to you lovely ladies too. I've had another look at the dress and I know that if I don't manage to shift this half an inch I still have other options.

Lynsey, looking forward to seeing my lovely jewels, I'm sure that will cheer me up.

The corset back sounds like a good option, but the body wraps can have really good results. You wont lose weight as such but you can lose quite a few inches from all over. The results are only temporary as a lot of the loss is water retention that is eliminated but you could have one a few days before just to give you that last little oomph.

Dont worry, sounds like there are a few options and half an inch isnt the end of the world. Well done on the weight you've already lost, concentrate on that rather than being angry with yourself. 1lb a week is a good loss, steady just as it should be xx

One word hunni SPANX!! Magic knickers that do exactly what they say on the packet, not attrcative but just whip them off in the bathroom when you take the dress off & change into nice underwear then, h2b will never know!

Actually once the dress os on a while with the knickers, you might find that the dress will stretch a wee bit...so you could possibly get rid of them on a wee toilet trip after the ceremony!! lol

Thats should you need to, but honestly there some fab options on here...I would go for the inch loss heat wrap thing! And do it like a day or 2 before the wedding just! It will calm you down, and sort the "wee prob" in 1 go!! dont stress about it tho hunni, cos ther no point getting worked up and annoying yourself, and prob you OH as well!!

Oh no! That sounds awful. ☹️

Can’t you take the dress to an emergency fitting at a local tailor? Maybe someone local will be able to fix it up for you…So sorry!

    BK, a few points

    a) FULL corset back is a great option - bow does not sound so good.

    b) Don't crash diet, instead start swimming, that will make a difference, go twice a week for the next four weeks! Trust me Smiley smile

    c) You will look stunning no matter what happens, no one will know if it doesn't do up anyway - just you and your mum!

    d) Get some M&S bodyshaping knickers, the one that go down to the thighs, then go try the dress on again

    e) Stop drinking tea and coffee and begin drinking as much water as you can 2.5/3 litres so that you eradicate water retention and your flabby bits are only flabby bits, I see so many people who complain about their tummies, yet most of the wobble is actually water retention becuase they don't drink enough - this should start to make a difference after a week.

    f) I think you need a big fat ((((((HUG))))))) as this has probably all been very stressful for you, I hope you can get it sorted in the next few weeks pumpkin xxxx

I've bought this for the wedding because although I'm a size 10 my tummy sticks out (because I've had two babies). It takes a good inch off my waist, if not a bit more but you will need help to get it on!:

I've also stopped eating carbs (v.hard and not for the faint hearted) and after only 5 days I can feel a difference, I'm less bloated and wobbly. Also second what saracroft says, drink loads of water because water retention is often the cause. It's also good for your skin! You HAVE got time to sort this out. Don't be down about it, be positive.

I'm with everyone else who has alreadd posted, 4 weeks is pleanty of time, and extending the corset back might just make you feel more comfortable. Have a big breath and a big hug and do something nice for yourself to take your mind off it.

Have you tried "grazing"? I'm not saying that it will work for everyone but its not a bad diet and not unsafe as you're making sure you get all the daily veg and fruit portions. So you're not missing out on anything. it also makes your skin glow as you'll be getting more fruit and veg than normal. I also only drank water and fresh fruit juice.

I'm not sure what type of weight loss plan you are on but tried this a few months ago when i needed to lose weight quickly to get into a dress for a friends wedding.

Its eating every hour from about 9am until 2pm - instead of breakfast and lunch, and then your dinner as usual. Its basically all the snacks you'd eat with a heathly diet throughout the day but one thing every hour (little and aften is how we're supposed to eat anyway) I just ate natural yogurt with fruit for my first snack, then fruit, seeds/dried fruit, a small salad/veg batons (with avocado dip or humous for example), basically all the snacks you eat are fruit or veg, so sugar snap peas, carrots, strawberries, blueberry in natural yogurt etc.

As you're eating little and often you dont feel hungry and therefore dont feel the need to snack on crisps/chocolate if you're waiting for your next meal.

Might be worth a try but you've still got time on the plan you're on anyway so all's not lost. ?

Thank for all the advice and support ladies ? I'm feeling more positive today and have a plan of action.

I already do some form of exercise everyday but I'm going to change the type to concentrate on trimming my waist. I'll be carrying on with the diet, drinking lots of water and trying to keep myself motivated.

If that doesn't work, well it's only half an inch! The dress can be adapted to bring the corset down further and I'll have a lovely body wrap a couple of days before the wedding.

    Fingers crossed
