Dress for a plus size bridesmaid

MissWin, 28 January, 2012 at 09:07 Posted on Planning 0 11

Morning all,

Was hoping you might be able to help. I can finally do proper planning now my other half has finally proposed!!!

I have been browsing Dessy for some inspiration for BM dresses. I am only planning on having my sister and my little girl. My sister however is probably about an 18-20 and I wanted to get an idea of what might suit her. She would probably want full length which is fine but can't get my head round what style might be good. I just want to make sure she feels comfortable on the day and loves what she is wearing (although ultimately, I won't force her into something she doesn't like!). I'm contemplating a black dress for her.

Would love some ideas x

Hi babe, ive seen some truely horrendous dresses in my time (as a wedding photographer) squeezed onto larger size girls - such a shame as I know they all feel uncomfortable yet cant complain cos they're a bridesmaid! The worse one was 3 large maids in sausage pink strapless satin, they didnt fit properly and one of them even bust the side zip putting it on and her MOB had to sew her into it with thick black cotton - they had back fat hanging out all day and I felt so so sorry for them.

However I have also seen some beautiful outfits on larger maids - I think black is a wonderful chic and stylish alternative and it always looks fabulous at a wedding, i'd def avoid strapless, have a sleeveless black deep V neck dress in a bias cut drapey fabric and then add a gorgeous black lace bolero over the top? Make it mid calf length and get her some fabulous shoes, put her hair up loosely and dress it with flowers or sparkles. Gosh im getting carried away here!!!!

My sister/MOH is a plus size (size 22 at the mo) and we have found tea length dresses to suit her the best with straps. The slightly upsetting thing is that we are having trouble finding sample bridesmaids dresses for her to try on. And the high street dresses doesn't seem 'special' enough. Monsoon really let us down this xmas!!

Hi, My sister is a plus size and going to be a bridesmaid. I have looked at all the websites and still not found a style that she likes. Was thinking a floor length dress might be better but maybe a tea length would draw attention from the other areas.

Any information that is found would be grateful as i would hate her to be uncomfortable in the day x

I'm a plus size bride and wearing a bridesmaids dress - ok I am paying more than you'd probably want to - 225 but that includes lots of structuring as well.

Have a look at the styles your sister already has in her wardrobe for inspiration maybe. I was never a dress person until I discovered empire lines dresses which apparently I look rather nice in. Whatever you go for make sure it isn't clingy in the wrong places but emphasizes the bits she likes, is in a flattering fabric - so nothing shiny............

Maybe also have a look at some of the larger 'stars' out there on the red carpet etc for ideas.

If it helps I'm getting my dress from http://www.phoenixgowns.co.uk - it's not a style I would usually wear but looked nice on and of course with all the industrial style scaffolding that I need am sure it'll make me look a size 12 lol.

For less traditional bridesmaids type dresses then www.yoursclothing.co.uk is where I buy my 'normal' dresses from - so might be worth looking - they do update their stock pretty often.

M928 by truebride is a dress we sell over and over in all sizes. We carry this one in stock in a 12 and a 22 (it has a lace up back and can be done in satin or taffeta) The other one that is similar is

m519 (also available in satin or taffeta)

The side sweep detail on both these dresses make them a lovely option for all body shapes, either hides and flatters or shows off what is already there!

Basically size isn't the issue when it comes to the dress, it's body shape and what she is conscious about. As bridesmaid dresses don't have the structure of bridal gowns then if she is heavy chested I would advise something with a strap (or consider adding one) so she can wear a properly supported bra, if she is conscious of her stomach go for something with the side sweep detail, If she likes her hips consider fishtail.

Phone around your local shops to see what they have in stock (or do a bit of window shopping yourself first) and see if it is worthwhile having an appointment. One thing I will say about Dessy is they dictate the size range that shops can order their samples in (we stock dessy) so samples are rarely bigger than a Dessy 16 as we can't order bigger than this for the shop unless we pay full price for it and make that investment. I would also say that whilst I am a huge fan of dessy and their designs, they are lacking in structure in comparison to other bridesmaid ranges

It was more shape we were having problems with. She did try a few dresses like the style above but they just weren't right. We ended up with a two piece for her which looks like a dress.
