Dress or Suit?

Claire_fairy29, 15 February, 2012 at 22:39 Posted on Planning 0 15

Okay so I just got engaged which is not something I ever thought I'd do. I'm so happy to be spending my life with the boy but marriage is to make him happy not me! So I don't want to be a bride or anything bridey at all! This means NO white dress! So I'm a bit at an end as to what to wear, I was thinking a black dress but it's a bit morbid. It'd be great if others could share experiences of what they did or any thoughts are very welcome.

Is it that you're not a dress person or just not a big white bridal dress person? What kind if wedding do you think you will have? I think you should wear whatever you feel comfortable in, there are so many options I'm sure you can find something you like if you have a good hunt around.

I wouldn't discount white just because it's 'bridey', but how about something like this:

What about a black cocktail dress?

Black would be fine if that's what you'd be comfy in. Plenty of girls on here have had coloured dresses. I think recently we've had green, purple, pink, and black with polka dots... And they've all looked stunning

Otherwise, what about a white suit? My friend got married in a white suit as she wasn't a girlie girl and felt more comfy in trousers. She still looked beautiful

Yep, this was me. I'm not a white/weddingy sort of gal either, so chose a funky dress I felt like myself in, and one I could wear again and again.

If the wedding is just for the OH & not you, then why get married at all?

This concerns me more than what you are going to wear.

But if you are going to get married, wear whatever you feel comfortable in!

You can wear any colour dress you want. I've seen red, blue, yellow.

Or how about an antique white dress? Just a normal party / cocktail dress. I see this used to great effect on many wedding blogs.

Why not just a dress...rather than a wedding dress.

Thanks guys you've been really helpful. I really like the idea of polka-dots. It's not that I don't like dresses I have millions of them it's just I don't like marriage. I don't like anything about marriage and my wedding isn't going to be a wedding really but a hand tying ceremony (so not legally binding). He just wants something public to declare that we love and want to be together but I don't really need that which is why I said not to an offical marriage. I won't be changing my name and there definately won't be anybody 'giving me away' (because I don't belong to anybody to be given in my opinion). Not that I don't respect people who want to do the traditional things they are just not for me which is why white is definitely out due to tradition. The black dress is lovely but I was hoping for something more simple. Does anybody have any good websites they could recommend? Thanks so much!

I had 2 dresses, 1 from Vivienne of holloway, and the second from good old ebay.

Wear whatever you want, do whatever you want. Its your wedding. The important thing is your vows. The rest is just detail.

Have a look at vivien of holloway, fur coat no knickers (they are white dresses but i'm sure they would findyou something), etsy. Also maybe have a look at https://www.rocknrollbride.com/ for weddings that are unconventional and lovely.
