Dress shopping problems!!!

o0o_Charlie_o0o, 28 January, 2016 at 12:02 Posted on Planning 0 9

I don't know what to do! I get married in August and my OH's sister is also getting married in August and so we are going together with MIL-to-be however... I had my 4th baby in December and I gained a lot of weight through pregnancy and I'd already gained weight before I fell pregnant so I have about 3-4stone to lose!!! I know I can do it Iv already lost 8lb in two weeks I'm motivated and Iv lost large amounts before so I'll get there but the issue is MIL and SIL-to-be want us all to go dress shopping now!! Whereas I just feel too fat, my body hasn't even had a chance to settle from having a baby lol but everyone is telling me I need to start shopping as its only 7 months until the wedding I'm just worried firstly I'll hate all the dresses because I feel gross but secondly that I'll pick a dress that suits my overweight size when I could have got a completely different style once Iv lost the weight, what would you all do?

Personally, I would go dress shopping in my own time, so that I felt comfortable and enjoyed the experience instead of stressing about my size! I also don't think I would want to share the dress shopping trip with someone!

I'm not entirely sure the lead times of dresses from boutiques, as I bought mine off the rail, so not sure how long you can leave it before looking!

I know some dresses take months to arrive from being ordered. What about sloping off dress shopping with a friend or someone else on the quiet. Try on see what suits and what you like before shopping with them. I'm not sure I would want to dress shop with another bride anyway. What if you like the same dress etc. Also a lot of dresses are corsetted so you will get a good idea of what you look like thinner. If you find something you want to order say you saw it in a window and went in on a whim.

Oh I have no problem going with them and them seeing the dress etc, me and SIL to be are on completely different pages where dresses are concerned so she won't want the same style as me lol and even if she did my wedding is first so I don't care lol, it's literally just about I don't feel ready, I feel gross and I'm worried I will just try a dress on and cry because I'm not happy with myself, but I also don't want to leave it so late that I can't be a dress I want :/

Personally I think you should go. Most dresses take around 6 months to order in so if you leave it you will be limited to sample dresses. Be honest with the shop assistants they deal and plan for weight loss brides daily so should be able to advise you. You will feel beautiful once you have tried one on. Even if you don't find one enjoy sharing the experience with loved ones ?

    Congratulations on the baby!

With regards to shopping, you can go and support your SIL and not necessarily try anything on. If the feeling takes you and you see a dress you love and you're feeling good, then do it. Don't force yourself to do anything you don't want to.

Thank you everyone, I think I'll probably go with the mindset I'm just looking and then in if I do decide to try on it will be because I want to and not because I have to lol

Personally, I think if you want to buy from a bridal shop then you should go now. I am currently waiting 10 months (and counting!) for mine, although I am assured it will be here in February.

Your best bet is to explain that you are planning to lose weight between now and the wedding to the shop. Nearly all dresses have to be adjusted anyway. I'm in the same boat that I still want to lose a chunk of weight before my fittings, but just go easy not to put yourself under too much pressure - you've just given birth!

I felt the same as you when I went along last week and it was fine - it really, really was!

I've got a fairly sizeable bust and lots of lumpy bits, and I wasn't looking forward to it at all. I went with my 2 best friends and they were fantastic. There was no pressure, the two shops we visited were LOVELY and didn't put me in anything that didn't suit me. I didn't like all the dresses I tried, but I now know what does and doesn't work with my giant boobs and my lumpy bits.

Go with an open mind and see what you find. Don;t stress about it, I got very worked up about it, and it really was OK!

    Good luck xx

Another vote for shopping now, or at least in the next month. Most shops will quote around 6 months for a dress to come in and alterations are generally started 6-8 weeks before the wedding (but you might find someone to rush it through). It would be awful to fall in love with a dress and then be told it won't be in on time.

Try to see past what you look like now. When I went shopping I had a massive fibroid (literally looked about 5 months pregnant) and I have a very fitted dress, which I plan on looking fabulous in now the fibroid is gone! I just had to imagine what it would look like once I was healthy again.

Go ASAP. My dress was ordered end of August last year and it's due in Mid Feb and I get married in May. Leave yourself enough time for it to come in and be altered it needed. I can understand your frustration of weight loss. I am in that situation too, haven't had any babies so haven't got an excuse just put on too much weight when I was poorly on steroids. They order the dress in what you are now, but I wouldn't worry since my fitting i've lost a couple of stone and they can take the dress in up to 6 sizes! Stop putting so much stress on yourself and try and enjoy it. You are who you are at the end of the day!
