Dress sizes

Harmaney, 29 February, 2012 at 18:49 Posted on Planning 0 12

I'm a size 10 but each dress I try on seems quite tight and I'm having to go up a size. Is this normal?

I often found the opposite, but think it depends on the designer. I ended up with a Maggie Sottero dress. I think its US sizing, as I'm usually a 12, and it says 10, so who know?

Dont worry about what the label says, its only a number & is irrelevant really.

Thank you. I know, it just makes me feel a bit self conscious. Stupid really.

I think it varies from one designer to another - some come up smaller and some bigger.

Bear in mind as well that some dresses have US sizes on. I bought my Maggie yesterday and ordered an 8 (which is a UK 10) which is my dress size is most "normal" shops.

US sizes are funny though, because some US brands say that they are one size different (ie a US 8 is a UK 10) but others state 2 sizes (ie a US 8 is a UK 12!)

I do think most wedding dresses come up small. The dress I've ended up ordering is a British company wuth UK sizes, and the bridal shop owner said they are the closest to 'true' sizes that she has ever found (the rest coming up MUCH smaller) - but even they are about half a size different (I have ordered a size 16, which is 39/32/42 according to their size chart; Monsoon 16 is 41/33/43 and 14 is 39/31/41 so sort of between the two, or Next 16 is 39/33/43.5 and a 14 is 37/31/41.5) so I'm aiming to be a high street 14 to fit comfortably in my dress (wearing a 16 at the mo).

My wedding dress is 2 sizes bigger than what my normal size is and it's Australian made designer.

From what the ladies at my dress shop said, the difference in the sizing in my dress is only about an inch in each size.

When it comes to wedding dresses, just ignore the size on the label and buy one that fits. Don't make yourself feel bad if the number on the dress isn't the same as the number on the clothes you normally wear. You will look FAR better in a "14" that fits you well than squashed into a "10" for the sake of being a 10.
