Dress stress

leejdj, 30 January, 2013 at 19:14 Posted on Planning 0 6

Hi

just had a letter from bridal shop saying my dress has arrived and I have to go pick it up. Wedding is 4 months away. I can try it on when I go get it but it's not a fitting. They've recommended some local seamstresses. So do I have to have my dress hanging in the wardrobe at home for 4 months? And who steams it? I take it if I try it on in shop I'll know if it needs altering? Argh!! Help lol!!

The seamstress should be able to steam it for you.

Are they not storing it for you? Normally I would keep a dress until the bride needs it, whether that be a day before or a month before and I would steam it once the alterations have been carried out by my seamstress.

Is it a small premises? Do they not have capacity for storage. I would be asking them a few more questions if I were you.

If it were a sale gown or an ex sample then it may be different but I would even normally store these as most brides do not have anywhere they could possibly store a dress!

I'd ask the shop, as they all tend to vary. Mine kept my dress for over a year

    Hi,

My daughter let me look after it as I could hang it in a room where no one would go. I kept it in the room with blinds drawn so no sun damage. Other daughter left hers at the shop till the week of the wedding.

Called the shop - I do need to store the dress myself so it'll be hidden in the wardrobe until the big day! There are seamstresses that visit the shop twice a week luckily Smiley smile

Do you not have a friend's or relative with a spare room who could store it for you? It might get a bit squished in wardrobe. I had my friends hanging from the curtain rail in my spare room with the blinds closed when I was bridesmaid, and I also had my cousins because we live on the same street.

My dress shop went bust so i was called in to collect mine. its currently in my mums spare bedroom in a king size quilt cover so it doesnt crease or get dusty.

One thing i did hate, is when i picked it up to check it over, theres fake tan all over the inside, the hem at the bottom is loose, there two tiny little dots of i dont know what, two loose threads on the detailing, and the under arm area is discoloured. also the back panel of the lace up bit is stitched on one side - my mum said shes only seen that done before when they're hiring it out. I think someone else wore my dress before me. When i brought all this up the lady in the shop told me it was my make up on the inside, im pale. beyond pale. my make up isnt orange. and then she just said "well you obviously just didnt notice before" and was beyond rude.

I know not all stores are the same but i've recommend all my friends to take theirs home just to be on the safe side
