Dress to suit my shape..

smoomoo, 21 September, 2009 at 08:50 Posted on Planning 0 6

Hello, im hoping to try and maybe get a dress online (or at least browse them!) and im wondering what would suit my shape. Id love a princess dress but im only 5'2 so dont want to look drowned. I also have a big chest (e cup) and im a size 10/12 but will hopefully be an 8/10 by the time of the wedding. Is anybody else as short as me? what did you go for? i kind of look curvy rather than slim because of my height so dont want to look like a ball! thanks!

The best piece of advice I could give you is to go and try some dresses on in a shop that are different shapes.

I know you are saying you want to buy online which is fine but you really do have to see the dresses on to know whether the shapes suit you or not. Sometimes the shapes that you think will suit you actually don't and vice versa.

    Best of luck

Ahhh - the hitcher with a cool name!

I can't really give any proper advice on this but hopefully some dress folk might spot it and advise - either that or the dress shops will be able to help you...

However, I'm 5ft 2", I am a size 14/16 (and was when I got married) and I went for a two piece dress, and the skirt was Aline. A bit dull maybe to some but perfect for my height/shape. I tried on all sorts of shapes of dresses, including shorter dresses and this style was by far the most flattering...

I am around your height, was a size 10 and a D cup.

I knew exactly the style of dress I wanted and thought would suit me but tried on some other styles just to make sure. Everything remotely big or floaty made me look chunkier and so I went for a tight fitting fishtail as planned.

    Hi

I am also 5'2" and a size 12..also with a big bust, I'm an F cup ☹️. I have a narrow waist but wider hips so I know exactly where you are coming from. I generally find that big skirts make me look shorter and wider which is very annoying! The dress I have is a halter neck with detailing under the bust which actually works well to make my boobs look a bit smaller.....

I would say definately try a few dresses to see which works best for you and what you're comfortable in ?

Of course you can go into a shop and try them on. Don't feel pressurised into buying - a lot of girls won't buy their dress right away - they'll go away and think about it or try on others first so it won't be strange for them that you want to leave without buying anything

Based on my (fairly limited) experience of trying on dresses, don't have a preconception about what will or won't suit you because you are most likely going to be wrong! I am also quite short - 5 foot 3 - and I also have a large bust (36E). I thought a strapless dress would make me look like a box and highlight my shortness, but I actually found one that did the opposite so I was really surprised.

Plus I didn't want to go too princessy or strapless because of my chest - the last thing I want is to be all busty on my wedding day, but again the dress I've chosen actually accentuates my curves without having them 'on show' if you know what I mean.

Plus I'm currently between a high street 14-16 (just depends where I shop) so I thought I'd have to avoid dresses like that like the plague, but it was the complete opposite!

So just go with an open mind, I think that's best personally.
