Dress trains...

missdeedee, 3 September, 2009 at 19:51 Posted on Planning 0 28

I tried my dress on again on Monday (? last time before I actually need a fitting, I promise) and I think the train is too long, Im thinking of having it shortened but Im worried it will ruin the look of the dress.

So..

Questions for those brides who had a long train on their dress, did you get on ok with it during the day?

Also, to those brides who had their train shortened, do you have any before and after pics? (Mrs Lord springs to mind, Im sure you had your shortened?)

Thanks

My SIL2B is going to do that with her dress - they will make something out of the extra fabric - saying that =, her train was excessive! and cutting it down only ment it would be 'normal' length.

    no train for me though,

Sorry I'm not going to be any help either, but I'd like to know what other people think about this too! Got a chapel length train on my dress and not sure I want to carry around all that extra fabric, but my sis and step-mum think I should keep it for the drama when I walk up the aisle!

    Thanks ladies,

Gillsy does your dress have quite a long train? I think I will get mine shortened, even just trying it on, I can imagine that it will get on my nerves everytime I try to turn around or something! x

I was wondering the exact same thing, so really interested in the answer!! I was thinking of getting mine bustled and/or shortened. I liked it when she bustled it up as an example in the shop.

    What's chapel length?

I had quite a long train which I was going to get shortened but in the end I decided against it.

I found moving around with the train ok but I did get my MOH to bustle it up after the meal and it was much easier then!!

With the length of the train.

With the train in a bustle.

Im not sure what length is chapel length!

Fancyfree, your train looks about the length of mine. I am getting a bustle added to put it up at night anyway, but Im still thinking about getting it shortened.

Thanks Ashmegdj, your dress looked lovely with the train (argh, I don't know what to do!!)

This is my dress, I know you can't see all the train, but you can get an idea in the mirror -

This is the pic of the dress on the model (the train looks huge here, I don't think it looks as long as this on!)

What do you think? Should I shorten it?

I haven't got any pics of mine, but i had a sort of train - two long pieces of silk tulle fabric which acted as a train. i got my dress maker to add hooks to them so that i could bustle them up and it looked really lovely, until one of the hooks broke off and i had to sling one of the bits over my arm all evening.

it got really tiresome, and really bugged me, so i would say don't get your trains shortened, as they do look beautiful, but DO get a bustle or at least some way of making it shorter for the evening.

I had quite a long train and found it easy to move around with, think only 2 people stood on it. I had it hooked up at night.

    Full out

    hooked up and dancing.

I'm not sure what chapel length is either, but that's what the lady in the shop said it was!

    This is mine:

I've been thinking about shortening mine- I didn't realise so many other people were considering it too! I thought I must be strange to want a shorter train as most dresses seem to have a long one. Is mine chapel length? Here's a pic of me in the sample (pinned) and of the model:

Something I did consider though about shortening it- would it affect the 'resale value'? I will probably need to sell my dress afterwards so recoup some of the money, but would people be put off if I'd had it shortened? I'd like to be able to say- 'it's size blah blah no alterations etc'. Would a shorter train put you off a second hand dress?

I loved my train and it didn't get in the way at all! In fact I only bustled it up very late on as the hotel was so busy I didn't want it getting stood on.

My train is probably about the length of most of the girls on here. I've still to get the alterations done so the dress is too long for me (although in the pic below I don't have any shoes on).

I think its possibly a shame to shorten it cos when do you ever get the chance to wear a dress with a train??? I'd love to try and keep the train down for as long as possible into the night but I'll have a bustle put in it and I'll just need to see how it goes.

Heres my train (seen as this is turning into a 'flash my train' post - love it!!!):

I think chapel trains are the really long ones, this is mine and it's a modified chapel train...won't be getting it altered as at the end of the night it will be bustled and as long as the dressmaker knows her stuff it will stay put and won't fall down with the weight ?

Serafina, do you mind me asking what your dress is? Only is looks very similar to mine at the bank.

My train was only altered to match in with the length being altered. When it came back after being amended I was quite shocked how long the train was lol, didn't expect myself to pick a dress like that! It's so hard when you're trying on dresses that are all 6 sizes too big to imagine exactly how they're going to be in the correct size. They did make me a small bow out of some of the fabric and attached a safety pin and loop to it so that I can hook it up to my wrist later in the day. I have to say, I am a little worried about how to move around during the day lol.

I'm not too worried about the fact that I'll have to drag the train around, more that it isn't really what I imagined I'd wear- I thought I'd have a slim, elegant vintage -style gown with perhaps a little sweep train rather than half a mile of fabric behind me!

Sorry for the late post, but thanks to everyone who posted and lovely dresses ladies.

Im going to get a bustle added anyway and have decided that, as my dress actually needs shortened, probably about 2-3 inches at the front, so I think Im going to get it taken up by the same amount all the way around and hopefully that will shorten it a bit but won't take away from the look of the dress.

I guess I'll only know once I see it pinned!

Has anyone else decided what they plan to do? x

I think I'm going to keep mine as it is but I'll probably ask the girl doing my alterations if she thinks it would be a good idea to shorten it all the way round the train when shes taking my hem up.

Thats basically what Im going to do Gillsy, hopefully it won't be a problem to take the same length off all the way around. I totally agree with you that Im never going to get another chance to wear a dress with a train, so I don't want to shorten it to much! x

I am hoping to be on the train this evening as i am going to the gym.

My work has been manic the last few weeks but it a bit quieter today thankfully.

How are you getting on and have you spoke to Meggy? Did she get all moved in to her new house?

Yay! I'll look for you at the station then!

I saw Meggy last Friday, it was her wedding anniversary last Sat so they were going back to the hotel for dinner, so sweet.

They got keys on Monday, but she's not moved yet, they've got quite a bit of renovations to do first so I think they're going to get everything done before they move x

Im planning on leaving fairly early so I'll be up just past the waiting room.

Eh, no.....but In my defense, Im waiting on M printing some inserts as I want the ribbon to go inside the card to so I can't finish them until the inserts have been done, so on that basis, I just kind of took a break from them! (excuses excuses!)
