Dress trying on advice needed please, a bit embaressing

claire_91, 5 September, 2012 at 09:26 Posted on Planning 0 19

I'm really embaressed that I have to ask this, on the advice of some ther hitchers I have booked my first appointment to try on some dresses on saturday to put my mind at rest about a few things but what kind of underwear do I need to wear? Does the assistant see you in just your underwear too because I'm not sure how comfortable I am with the thought of that. I am going to be trying some sonsie by veromia dresses and the lady also said I can try the mori lee dresses with lace up back. I am looking forward to seeing some dresses properly and getting a feel for what they are like on Smiley smile

I would maybe wear leggings and a little vest top perhaps (not too thick so it doesn't look odd under the dress).

Wear matching underwear in case you do have to get down to your undies.

But most importantly, don't worry - they would have seen it all before - I was standing in literally my pants on Saturday (no bra), although I've never done that in a dress shop before!

The assistant would normally need to help you into the dress so I don't think there's much choice, unless you wear something like a thin pair of leggings underneath that you can take off once the dress is on.

What are you embarassed about? It's no different to being in your bikini on holiday. They've certainly seen it all before and even without bras where people don't need to wear one with their dress.

I was really nervous about this too. I wore leggings and a vest the first time.

After the first shop, I realised I wouldn't actually care. They have seen it all before and they don't make you feel uncomfortable at all. I just wore my usual underwear after that.

I think it depends on the shop. I went to 2 and in the first one I stood in my underwear whilst the lady put the dress on me. In the second they left the dress hanging in the changing room and I stepped into it myself before being done up. Don't be embarrassed, like Kirstabubble says, they've seen it all before. I just wore normal underwear (not even matching) to try them on but you need wedding underwear for your first fitting onwards.

I just wore white knickers and a white strapless bra.* Don't worry, it's not embarrassing - it's their job.

*Obviously I arrived at the shop with more clothes on than that.

Knees I can honestly say I have never worn a bikini in my life as I have always been big and very self-conscious about my body. The weight is now starting to come off so I will slowly get more confident as I carry on losing. I know I'm being silly but the only person who has seen me in my underwear or even a swimming costume for over six years is my fiance. As you say they see different womn's bodies every day and I guess I just need to get on with it.

I was really nervous too. I usually wear small pants so I had to go out and by some proper knickers so I didn't show off too much ?. I wore a white bra but after trying on a couple and trying to shove the straps down I just whipped it off as it was much easier. The other hitchers are right, they have seen it all before and you really will feel much more comfortable after the first couple of dresses. I hope it all goes well. I had a great day and really enjoyed it. Good Luck. x

Yeah this was something I didn't even think about until I was actually in the changing room, and the woman came in with the dress and just stood there waiting for me to strip off. I wasn't prepared for that and I'm quite a prude I think, I just get all self conscious and embarrassed but I literally just had to grit my teeth and get on with it, not think about it and like the girls have said, these shop assistants do this every day, they've seen women of all shapes and sizes, and it's only for a few seconds (assuming you don't have trouble getting into the dress!) so just take a breathe, put it out of your mind and go for it, it's really not so bad :-)

I won't even get a bra measurement in M&S I'm so coy and you don't even have to get naked for that!

    ? Bet you didn't.

Because of the dress style I wanted, there are three shops in the country with assistants who have seen me shivering in only knickers. One even spent some time plumping my boobs once enveloped in dress. They do not care, they have seen it all, you don't know them, most of them you will never see again. They aren't judging, although you may find some assistants very honest to the point of bluntness - they are trying to make you look beautiful, if your bottom looks fat in a particular style, they may well tell you.

I am far more comfortable baring anything in front of strangers than with people I know.

Most the shops i have been to put you in the changing room say something along the lines of 'if you want to just strip down to your bra and knickers and give me a shout when your ready' then leave me to it and come back when im in my underwear and help me into the dress, they don't give you looks or judge because as others have said they have seen it all before...id say a strapless bra is best but i haven't deliberatly worn matching knickers.

personally i wouldn't wear leggings and a top as you want to get a real idea of how the dress falls on you, once you have been to one you will be fine! if you are really embarassed about your weight (not sure how big you are) but you may feel more comfortable going to a shop that specialises in the larger sizes first as i imagine they have more experience dealing with self concious brides, just an idea obviously i have no idea what dress size you are so may be irrelevant.

    good luck and ENJOY!!! x

I was naked apart from knickers! They really don;t mind and make you feel comfortable though so don't worry.

I wore big seamless flesh coloured pants and a strapless bra. The lady came in the changing room with me but to be honest she was concentrating more on helping me in and out of the dressess that I doubt she really had much of a chance to look at me half naked. I did not feel uncomfortable at all.

I've also known shops where they just pass the dress through to you to put on yourself but I think this is unusual and with certiain/most dressess they will have to help you do it up anyway.

As others have said, try not to feel self conscious, they've seen it all before. I used to work in a beauty salon before I changed careers so I've seen the lot and I can honestly say that if it is your job, you really dont care what people look like, you don't judge and you don't batt an eyelid.

Like most of the others I wore knickers and a bra and eventually just knickers. Its usually quite a private affair so you should be fine! my dress is Sonsie too ? it has the most amazing inner support corset type thing with a lace up back. Good luck and enjoy the experience, you will feel brilliant!

I was really nervous before my first appointment but like everyone else has said it was fine. I wore a plain black strapless bra and knickers and I never felt concious like i thought I would. The assistants are lovely, and they do come in to help you in and out of the dresses but that's what they focus on. Don't worry about it, just enjoy the experience!

The first shop I went into just let me get into the dresses myself. They were on a hanger so I crouched on the floor and supermanned up from the bottom then just unhooked it from the hanger and wiggled it down. They then came in and straightened me up and tied me in. They didn't mind at all and just said to shout if I needed any help/when I was ready. The second shop I only tried on a couple and it was very quick because the lady stood there holding the dress while I had to take my clothes off and I didn't like it one bit ?

Same here, I was self conscious at first, but they don't bat an eyelid and are just there to help. You could always get an all-in-one thing so its more like a swimming costume than a bikini?

I was really worried about this, to the extent that I was crying on the morning of the appointment and getting in a real tizzy... I promise it will be fine! I was trying on Veromia Sonsie dresses mainly and they were amazing. The shop I went to (Curvy Couture in Ingatestone, Essex, amazing place, go there if you can!) had these lovely fluffy dressing gowns that you slipped on and then I did a bit of a manoeuvre when they lowered it over my head as I shrugged off the gown.. To be honest by the time I was on my second or third dress I had whipped off my bra and was the nuddiest I have been in front of anyone except my OH... I am a size 26 so plenty of flesh on show!!! I would recommend big pants so they don't roll down or you don't have to keep pulling them up!

The sonsie dresses are amazing, completely put all my curves in the right places and gave me a waist and everything! I have got Sonsie 9013... first fitting next week!!

    Good luck xx

I went for my first trying on sesh today. I wore nude coloured hi leg seamless drawers and a normal bra,as I knew I'd probably have to take it off. I am self consious of my body too,and the lady was great-she put the dresses in the changing room let me go in and pull them on, then I came out into a private area with a 7 way mirror (eek!) and she put me on a little pedestal and shoehorned me into the dresses. There was lots of huffing and boob yanking, and by the end of it I felt like I'd known her for years, lol. She did tell me off that I'd worn the wrong underwear- bigger pants and a strapless bra or an all in one would probably be best. Don't worry and good luck ! x
