Dresses and deposits - opinions needed please! *update*

Jay-Low, 27 April, 2010 at 19:07 Posted on Planning 0 13

First of all, just to put you in the picture, I am pretty sure I have found 'the one' when it comes to my wedding dress. I am going to another shop tomorrow to try some others on just to confirm it for me!

After I tried 'the one' on I phoned around to see if I can get it cheaper elsewhere (always after a bargain me!). I found a shop that will give me what they have described as a "special offer" which saves me about £100 - not a huge amount on a dress that costs £1000 but still to me a significant saving - that will pay for all my favours or my shoes etc etc. Anyway, the "special offer" expires tomorrow - the shop owner would only hold that price for 1 week. I phoned them today to explain I'm trying on more dresses tomorrow and could they extend the offer for a bit longer - she will only extend it until thursday for me.

I should also add that if I buy my dress from this shop they will give me 10% off bridesmaid dresses. This will save me another £60 - and myself and my bridesmaids have fallen in love with a Veromia dress in the shop which they have all tried on and agreed to. Another thing I should add is that the shop in question doesn't actually have a sample of the dress in question - I tried it on elsewhere.

So my question is - do you think the shop is being too pushy and trying to rush me into a sale? The staff have all been very friendly and helpful. I feel happy to go ahead as I love the dress but my mum and dad are paying for it and they feel a bit hesitant because they feel the lady is being too pushy and rushing me into a sale. Also, what is a normal deposit for a wedding dress? They are asking for 75% on order and the rest on collection.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi vicky, it does seem they are being a bit pushy.... They should know these things cant be decided overnight!! You need lots of time to think it over. My dress was 50% deposit and balance on collection. Can you go back to the original shop and say you are being offered a better deal elsewhere to see if they can match it.

    Thanks Marie,

Hmmmm not sure what to do! But I will definitely see if the original shop will match the price, good idea. It would mean I wouldn't get 10% off the bridesmaid dresses but then I could always shop around for those too.

Its difficult because yes they may be being a bit pushy, but at the end of the day they are running a business and have to do what they have to do, so dont let them put you off the dress. If the dress is the one for you then order with whoever will save you more money ?

Ive never known anywhere ask for 75%, its usually 50%

Deposit wise, mine was 50%. As far as them being pushy, they are a business and want the sale, and sometimes its not totally down to them, the supplier may have a deal for this month allowing them to buy dresses at a discounted rate, hence why they can only offer the discount to you until a certain time, but still, you should only buy when you feel comfortable.

my friend saw her dress in a shop last year when she got married and like you, priced around. She found another shop, who hadn't the dress in as a sample, but were prepared to order it and it was fine. The BM dresses were also coming in cheaper from the other shop! There was a small problem in that the wrong BM dresses came in but that was a manufacturer error. they had the wrong style number on their online catalogue, so when me friend showed the dress on their website and they were ordered, it was ordered under the wrong style no. in the end we liked the new dresses better.

the one the prob was with was alice james, and yours isnt by them so you should be ok!

Thanks guys for all your helpfull advice... for those who are interested I just thought I'd let you know what I've decided!

I decided seeing as this is the most important dress I will ever wear I will not be rushed into a decision!! For the sake of £100 I decided to think about the dress for a bit longer and give myself a chance to go back and try it on again and perhaps try other dresses (there is a pronovias dress I still really want to try on, even if it is just to rule it out as an option!) And I can always get the bridesmaids dresses elsewhere and shop around for a cheaper price on those too...

... so when I phoned the shop to let them know I'm going to think about it for a bit longer but I understand I won't get the discount the woman was a bit shirty so now I'm very glad I decided to wait!!

Ahhhh your making me think I should wait now! Especially as its the same dress. Let me know if you order it....I'm going to see it again on Saturday and am hoping that I will know on the day if its right or not because I can't stop thinking about it.

My shop actually made me pay the all balance before they would order my dress! Wasn't to happy about that! But I took the risk and got my dress!

You shouldn't rush yourself in making your decision. If they really want to sell you the dress trust me even if you go back later than the deadline they gave you I am sure you could work out something with them! If they are prepared to give u a deal now they will also later ?

Oh don't get me wrong - I'm still in love with the dress and I can't stop thinking about it either!! ❤️ And perhaps if it was my money I would have just gone for it. But because my parents are paying for the dress I didn't want to rush and put a £700 odd deposit of their money down when I could change my mind - and I'm only saying that because I know how indecisive I am.

I am also planning on going back and trying it on again but haven't managed to find a space in my diary yet!!

Did you manage to get your shop to match the price or are you waiting until Saturday??

My mum kept freaking out saying ( and what if the dress don't turn up! ) But I knew this shop had a really good reputation.

    Hi Vicky

I had a ring around a few shops but the lowest I can find the dress is £1,025, one shop was charging £1,400! Found it really hard trying to find shops that sold the Livia dress though.

I have made another appointment at a different shop to look at other dresses before trying the Livia dress on later in the day on sat.

I'm pretty sure if it was a bit closer to the date it would a yes to the dress for sure but it just seems so far away.

I think £1,025 is still a good price. Whether or not this is true, I don't know, but the lady in one of the shops told me that the recommended price set by Ronald Joyce is £1200-£1400.

I'm planning on doing the same as you - looking at dresses in another shop and then going back to the shop with Livia later that same day so I can hopefully make a decision. Let me know how you get on!!
