Dresses: What you wanted vs what you bought!

Stazzle, 26 October, 2009 at 11:37 Posted on Planning 0 42

I must confess, I've stolen the idea for this thread off another wedding forum ? but thought it was a good idea as so many of us end up with such a different wedding dress to the style we thought we'd go for and it's interesting to see the difference between the dresses we end up with and the ones we originally wanted.

So for me - I originally wanted a dress with straps, something quite subtle and elegant, classy and sophisticated and absolutely not princessy at all. I'd fallen in love with this sort of style, which is Caleigha by Maggie Sottero:

What I've actually ended up ordering is this - a very princessy dress by White Rose:

And why not - a pic of me in the sample too, just for luck! ?

https://www.flickr.com/photos/42730584@N05/3941807531/

I didn't even want to try mine on at first, it was so not the style I wanted!

So show me the dress you thought you wanted, vs. the dress you ended up choosing!

(Edited to add the flickr link in for the sample pic - for some reason it's not letting me copy and paste the pic as usual...)

Ooh this is a good thread for a monday morning!!

When we got engaged Paul bought me lots of wedding magazines and I was in heaven looking at all of the dresses, I didnt have a particular style in mind, all i knew was that I didnt want a big train - I hate anything too long (i guess its 'cos i'm short!!)

Then I saw a picture of a gorgeous dress, so perfect for me!

So I went to a few bridal shops and no one did it - a lasy did have a similar one that she "designed & made" herself but it had a long train, so I asked if i could have a similar one but without the long train and she told me that she couldnt Smiley sad so i tried a few more and liked different styles

Then I found it in a shop i hadnt thought of, and tried it on, it was perfect, my friend cried and i was so in love with it I didnt want to take it off!!

I fell in love with this dress....

...and its the one im having!!!

    xxx

    I actually bought
off the internet as it was the style etc I thought I wanted but after major wobbles I went to a bridal shop and tried some on, including one that OH liked the pic of on the internet and have now ordered this one. Totally the opposite really but I LOVE it!!!

    I adore Charlotte Balbier's Kitty

But didn't see one within budget so I've gone for the equally beautiful Maggie Sottero Coco:

Some lovely choices - plus I think you all made the right decisions because I seem to prefer all of the ones you have gone with rather than the ones you initially wanted! ?

Nayso - my dress is Shannon by Maggie, the price tag in the shop was £1050, but shop lady later told me that was a mistake and it should've been priced more like £1300. I ended up buying the shop sample which cost me £650 after we haggled a bit off.

I love Maggie dresses, the corsets are fantastic and comfy too! Happy dress hunting! :-)

I honestly can't remember what dresses from magazines I liked but my list had sparkles, not too big, possibly not ivory, different from the normal plain dresses. The only thing I liked the idea of was a halterneck but I'm 100% glad I didn't have one.
So I got what I set out to get going by my list of preferences.

Sheesh, well my scrap book had about 12 different dresses, some tea length and some full length. All of them had a 40s thing about them. Some were slinky (not suitable for my figure at all!) some were very Grace Kelly but never saw one to try....many had a frill/pleat to them.

The ones I tried; I tried corsetry but twasnt of the era and that bugged me, I tried fishtails which showed off my curvy hips lovely but also showed my rounded tum.... I would have like strapless but...... I had loads of ideas but couldnt settle for one and women in shops would look at me oddly when I said it had to have an essence of the 40s/hollywood glamour. So when I found my Amanda Watt one........ that was it.

In hindsight though I would have changed the skirt. It felt like a sleeping bag in the heavy duchess silk and the vertcial panels just didnt do it for me. But still a lovely dress.....

This is the dress I originally wanted

but more importantly than that I had a list of definite no-no things - these were, no pink, no princess fluffy style skirt, no flowers or embroidery. I wore this ?

It was totally not what I wanted and my mum picked it out, I rolled my eyes and agreed to try it on anyway. I loved it as soon as it was on.

This is the dress I was going to have it "fitted" my budget. I'm so glad I was able to change my dress because anytime I see it now I cringe ? (It would have been in ivory if you can picture it!)

And the Dress I ended up getting (I have goosebumps every time it see it!) is a dark ivory!

This is the one I loved before going to try it on, along with another one that had a flower at the hip (was a picture in a magazine):

and this is the one I ended up getting:

Was very very happy with my choice, it was a stunning dress and I loved wearing it (had it in magnolia which was a gorgeous creamy colour).

Good post stazzle, interesting to see what people thought they wanted and actually ended up with!!

Brill thread, its really interesting to see what could have been:

I knew I would wear Ivory, as when I went with my friend a number of years ago shopping the lady in the shop advised her it would be ivory and we are of the same colourings

I wanted something to make look slimmer than I am as if there is a dress out there??? I thought it would be this dress like a coat effect dress

Because it sat below the waist a made me look a little slimmer. But I did not like the girls in the shop, it was the dress until I visited the one near work and found the one. The lady in the shop is now a good friend, the dress was a sample and it would intially not fit but I got in to. She made the shawl for me, as aware of upper arms.

Felt perfect on the day, would love to wear it again... Mybe a treasure your dress theme?
