Drink Driving - what now?

Alka, 7 July, 2008 at 10:37 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0

Hi all

I was wondering if you could give me some advice that I could relay to my best friend, her H spent Saturday night in the cells at the police station. They'd had a huge row whilst out and he'd been drinking. For some god awful reason he stormed off home, and then once home, got his car keys and decided to go for a drive! He drove into 2 parked cars off of a mini round about, knocked himself out and woke up at the police station. It's a miracle that no one was hurt!

My friend is absolutely devestated, and I'm just furious, I never liked him in the first place but this has just reconfirmed my feelings on him!

They have just had a baby and money is very tight, they have a lot of debt, and now she is worried that his car insurance will be invalid, which I suspect is correct, he's yet to ring them because he's a total plank.

It's his first offence, if anyone knows what happens now I'd appreciate your views as I really don't know what to tell her. He has to go to court of the 16th July. Will his insurance be invalid, will he have to pay for the repairs to the other vehicles? He'll obviously be banned from driving, will there be a prison sentence too?

Any advice would be appreciated.

I don't know about insurance etc I'm afraid, although in regards to prison every case is different - a friend of mine was caught drink driving and was banned for 12 months and ordered to pay for the damage to the car they hit plus a fine, another friend managed to get away with a 12 month ban only, my H drove drunk when he was 20 and hit another car and went to prison for 9 months. There's really no way to know what will happen I'm afraid.
