Drinks... Anyone used supermarket bargains for their weddings?

*Nursey*, 8 November, 2010 at 16:26 Posted on Planning 0 11

Further to the morrisons post, just wondered if anyone was getting special offer drink from supermarkets and using it instead of the drinks packages? Just wondering if I can get "better" drinkies for more my money rather than the stuff the hotel provides...

I'm certainly not a drinks expert so will admit to being clueless!

Our hotel's "house wine" was £16.50 a bottle so even with corkage you ought to be able to find something better cheaper, especially if you can buy bulk at somewhere like Bookers (if you know someone with an account, of course).

We are having our recpetion at a village hall so buying nearly all the alcohol from the supermarket - but we are not buying expensive stuff, just stuff we like..... we have been to wine parties and realise that we like the stuff most people don't, but due to it being in a village hall we are giving everyone freedom to bring their own......

We are buying martini asti at £5.28 as it is my favourite, neither me or h2b or our families like champagyne....

    Me!

We got all our wine during the Tesco wine festival the other week. We got both our white and red at half price, so we got £8-9 bottles of wine for £4-£4.50! We also got Martini Asti (our reception drinks) for about £5 a bottle and a sparkling wine for about £7-8 a bottle which were all slightly discounted during the festival!

So for 30 bottles of white, 30 bottles of red, 12 bottles of rose, 18 bottles of Asti and 12 bottles of sparkling wine it came to about £450 (I think!) ?

We are also getting our spirits from supermarkets when its on offer e.g. 2 bottles for £25 or 1 litre for £15 etc etc as its much better than duty free etc! Oh and btw 1ltr of Baileys is £9.97 at morrisons (I think its the same at Sainsbury's too atm)

Only thing left is beer/cider etc which we are leaving until nearer the time as it goes off. We are getting that at the supermarkets when its 3 for £20.

One trick is if you are paying corkage (we arent though) is buy bigger bottles of wine i.e. litre bottles or 1.5 litre bottles (if you can get them!) as you pay per bottle so its cheaper!

    xxxx

Haha I love this! I am thinking of getting Mum to be in charge of drinks as she knows much more than me... I'll let her work out the details but will defo suggest this. The only thing I'd like is a few glasses of Rose set aside for the Bride! Haha

Good plan on delegating! Chosing one white wine and one red wine for everyone really gave me a headache!

We worked out that even with corkage we would save over £300 supplying our own drinks (a glass of bucks fizz as a welcome drink, half a bottle of wine for each person and a drink for the toast) So far we have bought the white wine (we are getting half white half red) we got Yellow Tail chardonnay (which I have had before and I really like) 3 bottles for £10 instead of £6.98 each (Asda) so now looking out for any decent red wine on offer and cava for the welcome drink.

Yes, I'll be getting all drinks for my guests as there is no bar in our private venue. With only having 44 and 12 of them are kids I don't have a mass amount to cater for but have factored in 6 bottles of Cava - really nice one priced £9.99 I got on offer from Sainsbury's for £23 for case of 6. This will cover the toast as I have bottles of Schloer for kids and non-drinkers.

Also I am looking for 12 bottles of white 8 of red and 8 of rose. Also boxes of beer which will be easy to pick up nearer the time. I'm not providing spirits or any fancy drinks.

We got got our wine from asda 3 bottles for £10 for £7 bottles of wine! nothing fancy but stuff we enjoy drinking. We got 21 bottles of white, 21 bottles of pink and 18 bottles of red so 60 bottles for £200 we also got a great deal from tesco for martini asti (also using for welcome drinks as oh loves it!) we got 12 bottles for £48 which is about £4 per bottle. Were going to get some buds aswell for the welcome drinks but nearer the time.

We can't do that as our venue insists on supplying the drinks package and won't allow corkage, otherwise would of been a lot cheaper! x

You can get some great deals at supermarkets on wine. I always buy my booze when it's on offer.

Last year I managed to get some Yellow Label Wolf Blass Chardonnay for £3.50 a bottle in Morrisons - it's usually about £8.99. I thought that was a bargain. The 3 for £10 (or £12 as it is now) is worth a look as well. At Tesco I think you get a further 5% off as well if you buy 6 or more bottles. Our supermarket deals often work out cheaper than the prices in France these days.

Be very careful buying the bigger bottles like magnums....I tried this with our venue and they said they will charge extra corkage for a larger bottle! Thought I was being really clever only to be stopped in my tracks!xx

Well... on the morning of the wedding my mum sent my dad to asda to buy loads of wine! It was cheaper to buy the wine on offer of 3 bottles for £10 and pay the £5 per bottle corkage than the £12 bottle wine that our venue provided.

Each table (16 tables of 10) had one red, one white and one rose.

Rose was definately the most popular then the white then the red...

Im so glad we bought the wine now because otherwise it would of looked a bit rubbish but everyone had a great time and the wine helped ?
