Drinks for toasts - total novice - help!

KristaltippsHall, 24 November, 2010 at 13:30 Posted on Planning 0 14

Hi girls, can anyone advise me as to drinks for toasts? Were having a pay-bar but are supplying something for this.

Neither H2B nor I are big champagne lovers so thats out. Can anyone think of anything that would go with the movie theme?

Other than that all I can think is wine, and I know literally nothing about wine - I discovered that I like rose Zinfandel recently but thats about it. Need to cater for about 200 guests, and obviously want to do is as inexpensivley as possible.

All advice gratefully received!

Martini is first one that comes to my mind, not sure how expensive they are to make tho!! But would look really effective as well in those cool martini glasses! I think its cosmopolitans they drink in sex and the city (dont watch it myself) but they are usually served in those glasses too and look really pretty so maybe martini for men and cosmo for ladies??

Just thought tho are you doing welcom drinks yourselves or are venue? Would probs be pricier for them to do than champagne would be!

    Hi,

the clients I am working with at the moment are not keen on champagne either for there toast, so they are having a sparkling wine, and its not so expensive, they are catering for 230 guests.

Sparkling wine would be cheaper than champagne, also you don't have to have 200 glasses as a lot of people don't drink & would prefer a soft drink.

You could have a cocktail list with your own movie style names for the bar...

    James Bond - Vodka Martini

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - Singapore Sling

Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy - Intergalatic gargle blaster

Sex in the City - Cosmopolitan

The Big Lebowski - White Russian

    Found these ones too:

THE LUAU MAI TAI, Blue Hawaii, 1961

    BLACK JACK, Basic Instinct, 1992

    VESPER, Casino Royale, 1967

    GIBSON, North by Northwest, 1959

HOT TODDY, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, 1958

WHITE RUSSIAN (WITH COCONUT MILK), The Big Lebowski, 1998

    RED EYE, Cocktail, 1988

SEVEN & SEVEN, Saturday Night Fever, 1977

TOM COLLINS, The Seven-Year Itch, 1955

MANHATTAN, Some Like it Hot, 1959

    ABSINTHE, Moulin Rouge, 2001

    As for toasting drink...

Prosecco is a nice alternative to Champers - mix it with some pureed fruit to make a bellini... yum...

A sparkling rose would be lovely too...

We're actuall using Shloer for toasts, partly because we're working a non-alcoholic package, but it might be suitable as an alternative for those that don't drink, those that are driving, and something for the kids to feel included too?

Or you could get a sparkling rose zinfandel, would be cheaper than champers but wouldnt specifically go with your theme! I found this one at waitrose for £8.35 a bottle or a case of 12 for £100 http://www.waitrosewine.com/230515276/Product.aspx but waitrose tends to be expensive so you might be able to get it cheaper at one of the other supermarkets!!

If you dont like champers and your trying to keep the cost down then id do a sparkling wine, this is what were having, cheaper and much nicer than champagne IMOH.

The coctails are a good idea too but it would have to be something you think most of the guests would enjoy. The martini is good for your theme but if i was a guest i wouldnt drink it, thats just me though, hate it.

It's the cost that's really going stop you doing individual cocktails, how about a big punch bowl though? People could then go up and get a glass if they're so inclined or stick with the drink that they've bought from the bar themselves...

(You might have to pay "Corkage" to the venue if you make the Pucnh yourself though)

Thanks for all your replies, we get free corkage so I think we will go with sparkling white wine, a rose and probably schloer or something similar - if anyone hears of any deals on in the next little while please do post!
