Drinks @ Reception

Mrs_T2B, 5 July, 2010 at 16:20 Posted on Planning 0 5

I am in a bit of a pickle about the drinks for the reception. Quite frankly, it is looking very costly and we don't really want to spend the amount they are asking on alcohol (more than the buffet per head).

These are the drinks packages offered:

Ruby Package £10.45 – a strawberry daiquiri or sherry on arrival, a glass of house red or white wine with meal, a glass of sparkling wine for the toast.

Sapphire Package £13.75 – a glass of alcoholic fruit punch or sherry on arrival, two glasses of house red or white wine with the meal, a glass of sparkling wine for the toast.

Emerald Package £15.95 – a glass of bucks fizz or pimms on arrival, two glasses of sauvignon blanc or merlot with the meal, a glass champagne for the toast.

Diamond Package £25.85 – a glass of pink champagne or alcoholic fruit punch on arrival, two glasses of sauvignon blanc or merlot with the meal, a glass of champagne for the toast.

I sent an email how much it would cost corkage to supply our own sparkling wine or champage and it's £8 for sprakling wine per bottle and £15 for champagne per bottle.

Is it just me or does thss seem a tad expensive? I'm really unsure on what to do now, as did want to offer at least one drink fro the toast but don't want people to think we are being stingy! Most people won't drink wine anyway, and we have a fair hsra eof children at the wedding. Nor me, my H2B or both sets of parents are wine drinkers either!

Help ☹️

We didn't ask about corkage but that does seem expensive. Our package prices are pretty similar - I think you can get cheaper but it depends to an extent on the fancyness of the venue - we found anyway.

I think although most people assume there will be wine with the meal, if it's not in your budget, it's not, end of. I don't expect people will moan or anything (espec if they don't drink wine!) and if you don't, then def don't pay that much for something you don't want and aren't happy about paying for.

In Ireland where most of my family are from, the tradition is that a waiter goes round during the meal and takes a drink order for the toast from everyone, which is paid for by the B&G, so if you want to do something, that might be nice - people will be getting a drink, but you won't be busting out on loads of wine and guests can have a choice. then if you can afford it and want to, you could maybe serve a reception drink, or make the first drink free. Don't worry too much - I never assume that there will be wine...as a wino it's nice when there is of course but it will be your friends and family there who are most concerned with celebrating your special day with you, not what they get for free! x

If you don't think people will be drinking wine with their meal then the first package sounds reasonable...

If you think about prices in a bar, a cocktail will be around the £5 mark, a glass of wine £4 maybe and more for a glass of sparkling so £11 for that really isn't unreasonable.

Welcome drinks for me are £4 - either Pimms, Bucks Fizz or Kir Royale. A bottle of wine is around £16 so maybe £3 a glass. And then aprkling wine is £19 a bottle so around £4 a glass - I;d say yours sounds similar to this.

The corkage charge does sound ridiculous but they need to make their profit somewhere if you aren't using their bar - they aren't silly!! ?

(BTW, if I wanted to serve my wedding cake as dessert, the venue would still charge me £4 per person to do this when their actual desserts are only around £6 each... Outrageous!)

I think the price is quite reasonable and standard.

The 1st package sounds fine. The strawberry daiquiri is a nice difference.

One thing our venue do is we only pay for the wine that is drunk.

If we order two glasses of wine for everyone during the meal, and some people dont drink it we dont have to pay for it.

You should ask if they do this. Why dont you ask the venue for their advice. They might be able to offer a package that is less expensive.

The corkage at my venue was a similar amount. However, they can order different drinks in (I really want sparkling shiraz as a welcome drink because I lurve it) for no extra charge.

I'd go for the first package if you're tight on budget ?
