Ebay - SHould I also refund P+P ?

sherry, 16 January, 2009 at 16:53 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 1

I sold an item and the buyer is now saying it does not work. I now 100% that it did work when I sent it as I tried it with new batteries.

He emailed to tell me it didn't work so I suggested that he try new batteries.

He said that as I described the item as new (which is was) then he should not have to go out and buy new batteries. I explained that if his batteries were drained then the machine would obviously not work.

I said if it still didn't work then I would refund the item cost and P+P that he had paid.

I suspect even with new batteries he is going to say it doesn't work.

He has asked if I am also going to pay for him to send it back? Do I have to? I suspect that he has either broken the item or it isn't exactly what he wanted. Although I can not proof this. If I pay for his P+P I will lose out on the ebay fees already paid, the item (because it is now broken) and his P+P I will be out of pocket. But on the otherhand it probably is the moral think to do.

No, you don't have to refund the return postage, it's entirely up to you whether you do or not. FWIW, on the two occasions where I've had an item not as described, neither seller agreed to pay the return postage.

If you're happy for him to return the item then I'd require him to do so at his own cost. Examine the item and if it shows no sign of breakage and does not work with new batteries then I'd refund him all postage costs (if you're also reasonably certain that it is the same item and not one he previously owned that stopped working).

If it's not in it's original condition or it works with new batteries then I'd refund him the purchase price but no P&P. Obviously that's dependent on him agreeing to return at his cost. Even if he opened a Paypal dispute he'd be rewuired to do so.

Either way you can reclaim your fees:
