eek! I'm going to be on the radio this lunch time

NeoShoegal, 8 October, 2008 at 11:22 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 6

My company has been short-listed for an award and the people organising the competition have made press packs for the contestants. So MrNeo sent these off to a few places in the area and now a local radio station will be calling me between 12 and 1 to promote it. Yikes!

I'm stupidly dead nervous about it even though it's only a very small local radio station. I'm afraid I won't be able to utter a coherent sentence. HELP!!! ?

That's great news! You'll be fine, I'm sure - just think of the promotional value of your airtime and write down some stuff to say in advance - ask them what they might ask you so that you can prepare.

I was asked to do an interview for Donal MacIntyre's Radio Five Live program which goes out on Sundays. I managed to delegate the interview to my husband, who also works for the company as I was petrified. He got the interviewer to agree to a recorded interview which he did at our local BBC radio station and he also asked for questions before hand so he knew what he wanted to say. He did the interview and it was fine. When the show aired last sunday, they'd cut him down to about 10 seconds!!

    aw, poor fella!!!!

Good luck with your interview - I've never been interviewed, but I guess you could prepare ina similar way to a presentation... as pudontour says, write down some keys points in advance - say 5 things that make you thing special, any relevant dates, offers, prices etc., and have them in front of you so you can be prompted if asked.

What station are you going to be on, shall we listen out for you?!

The presenter just called me with the questions they'll be asking. They are pretty straight forward questions so I guess it will be ok.I will be making a few quick notes though

It's nothing like pudontour's interview, not going on national radio! Although it will be longer, I've just been told they like long answers (not just yes/no kind of thing).

It's just a program about life in Sheffield. No need to listen in, I'm sared enough already! ?

You'll be fine. Write down the three main messages you'd like to get across during the interview an dhave these in front of you when they ring. Also, have any useful facts and figs and front of you too.

I do this kind of stuff for a living (have done 9 radio interviews this week glup!!!!) and the key to success is being prepared. Oh, and breathing deeply so you can speka slowly, too. I'm a terrible gabbler.

    Good luck!

Thanks! especially about reminding me to talk slowly, I normally talk rather fast and when I'm nervous it get exponentially worse.

I'm listening to the show online now, I've got about 10 minutes before they call me.

made my notes, got all the important websites open.

    I AM SOOOO NERVOUS!!!

I used to work in radio and my advice would be to talk slowly, and pretend you're chatting to your mate in the pub.... have bullet points to prompt you , but don't read word for word from them - it sounds awful on the air ? don't worry too much about being word perfect, the listeners are human too!! good luck..

ps. can you email me the link to your entries again? i had a quick look last week but then forgot to go back to it ?

Well, I survived! She did ask 2 questions that I wasn't expecting and my mind nearly went blank, but she was really lovely to talk to. I guess it also helps that I like the topic ?

    MrNeo said it was great.

Ebee, this is the link for the competition
