Electricity bills

Westy, 3 September, 2009 at 11:29 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 7

We've just had our electricity bill (actual reading) and we seem to be averaging about £90 a quarter. We are on quite a low price plan as we took our the prce protection 2010 that british gas launched in 2005. This ends in May so we are just slightly concerned that our bills our going to jump even higher then. We can't seem to get our electricty usage down. We have a monitor so we keep an eye on what things cost to use, we turn off lights when not in the room, do not leave things on standby, have energy saving lightbulbs. We do have an electric oven and shower which we use every day and we do use tumble dryers every now and then.

I only work 3 days so am here for 4 days a week and in a month will be on maternity leave so will be here all the time so the bills our going to jump.

Is £90 a quarter about average for a 3 bed semi wth GCH, two adults and one child?

£90 doesn't sound too bad. ours is around £140/quarter and that's in a locked in tariff (we do have a stupid amount of gadgets and leave 3 computers on 24/7 and everything on standby). I was slightly worried as out tarriff was due to end next month but I've just switched to another locked in one and although it's more expensive it has a bigger discount (for being fully online) so it works out about the same.

£90 a quarter isn't bad at all - my quarterly bill is around £70 which is a 3 bed semi with just me all the time and my OH 3/4 nights a week.

I had an argument with Atlantic Electric and Gas yesterday as we are now paying £180 per month combined, with £96 a month being for electricity. I nearly fell over, They say it's correct but we have a 3 bed detached and only the two of us here and we use a real fire in the winter.

Thanks for the replies. My worry is that we are paying £90 a quarter on the lowest tariff there seems to be. No-one will even talk to me about switching when I say I'm on 2010 PP as no-one can beat it at the moment. So what are they going to be like when my tariff changes and when I am on ML? We pay something like 12.3p for the first number of kwh per day and then 6.4p for the rest. Just a quick look on BG shows that the cheapest available now is 21p for the first bit 9p for the second, so our bills will increase by quite a bit.

Poochanna - ouch. Combined we pay £60 a month at the moment, that's going up to £70 next month due to the gas bill as we always seem to be in debit (even though our quarterly bill for gas this month was £19.) I think our first bill was winter so we are always playing catch up. I'm sure we used to pay something like £40 a month combined and be in credit.

Have you had a look on uswitch to see if you can get anything cheaper?

Ellena - it's only cheap this bill as it is the summer and we haven't had the heating on, so we only use gas for cooking and for heating water for washing up etc.

The previous gas bills were £73, £139, £87 and then this one at £19. The pattern was similar last year too. It averages at about £80 a quarter.

The electricity tariff doesn't change until May so I'll have to have a look around at the suppliers then, just a bit worried that they are going to jump as soon as I go onto SMP. I worked out that it would add about £50 a quarter to our electricity if we went onto BGs cheapest tariff at the moment. I am so glad I price protected in 2005.

Woah that seems really high! We have gas and elec - the most we've paid per month was £115 in the winter. We're in a 2 bed, semi bungalow, but is's fairly large and really cold. So lots of heating needed.

I have a computer running all day, use the washing machine every day, have an electric clothes drier I use most days, the TV is always on, the place is lit up like a christmas tree in the evening as I keep leaving lights on, plus we have an electric cooker. Plus in the summer I have air-con on a lot and in winter I have the de-humidifier on tons to help stop the mould.

I can't understand how you could be using more than me! Thats sounds like there is something up. Could you take your own readings and work out the costs yourself? Although I tried this once and never figured it out.
