Embarrassingly basic question about wifi

Librarian Girl, 14 August, 2008 at 13:00 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 8

OK, I'm a luddite. I've been googling all sorts of things and can't find a simple answer to my question:

We currently have cable broadband to a PC (virgin media - it's what was fitted to the house when we moved in). We need to get rid of the PC and get a laptop, and would like wireless broadband. Do we need to keep the current broadband modem, or will there be a special attachment that comes with the laptop to pick up the broadband somehow?

? yes, I am fick ?

You will need a wireless router. This plugs in to the wall.

Your laptop should have wireless technology inside it.

Edited to add: I could be wrong about the router, what with you having cable.....errmmm...?

We've got Virgin broadband and are using it wirelessly on our laptop and with our wii.

I think we bought a wireless router by Netgear. Works fine

We had virgin broadband, and bought a wireless router so that we could use the internet on the laptops. Just check that the router is compatible with what you are using.

The router is connected to the broadband, with a LAN cable to the PC and we have wifi access on the laptops.

The best thing about it is that we now have the printer connected to it, so we can print wirelessly!!

SC does that mean we'd have to keep the PC? The reason we need to get a laptop is that the spare room is going to become baby room and we've got to get rid of the PC desk, monitor etc so if we have to keep it, will need to re-plan.

? other library gal! Will keep a note of netgear.

No you don't have to keep the PC. Plug wireless router into telephone/cable socket, turn on, set up security settings using instructions and said laptop. Tahdah!

We switched to Talk Talk for our broadband and got a free wireless router, so it saved us a few squid. We now have the PC in the study, the XBox and Wii in the games room, the PS3 in the lounge and my laptop wherever I end up working, all magically and invisibly connected to t'internet.

? all, I now feel slightly better prepared for trip to computer shop - otherwise I know they'd try and sell me all sorts of unnecessary crap.

Just remember to tell them you have cable not BT as there are different wireless routers and a BT line one won't work with your cable broadband. You then either need a laptop enabled with wifi (they pretty much all are now) or a USB dongle/internal drive to get your PC wifi enabled.
