End of my tether with the cat...

amihohu, 17 January, 2014 at 11:55 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 9

We have two cats, the older girl keeps peeing on our hallway carpet and it's stinking the place out... I've sprayed it with various stain removers, sprayed some 'get off' pet spray, which is supposed to stop them doing it... to no avail, does anyone have any suggestions? It's getting to the point where I don't like having visitors for fear of her peeing on it and it stinking the place out, ergh!

Oh god I know what you mean!

My cats keep weeing whenever this stray cat gets in - or its the stray cat, can't figure out which. I've solved it by locking the cat flap - cats can go out but not get in. Sorry this wont work for you. Just wanted to show some solidarity because I totally get how annoying/fustrating this is! It's a really pain to try and locate as well sometimes.

I'm sure I've read of lemon juice being a cat deterrent. Just spray some jif on the floor where they're peeing, might help. If not it'll just leave it smelling lemony-fresh!

Has anything happened that could be making your older cat nervous or worried?

One of my cats randomly started doing this by peeing either in the dining room or on the door mat. It turned out that she had a kidney infection and once this was sorted, she stopped.

I have read that cats sometimes associate toileting areas with pain if they are ill, and that is why they start peeing elsewhere. She didn't appear to be ill, which is why I didn't realise for a while.

It might be worth getting the vets to check out a urine sample just in case?

There could be many causes of it, she could be trying to mask a scent she doesn't like, marking her own scent, maybe she doesn't like where you have put her litter tray or it isn't clean enough for her, maybe she doesn't like sharing a litter tray, maybe she's just a pain in the ar$e! I would suggest trying to move the tray somewhere else, or maybe just getting a new one so she has the choice of two if it is sharing she doesn't like.

How old is she? I know you said she's older than your other but that doesn't give much away. When we buy a new kitten we always crate them for a few days over night with a tray which gets them used to using it if they aren't fully sure. Luckily our new kitten is fantastic and already sharing trays with our other cat.

feliway is supposed to also help in situations like this. I feel your pain as I have had cats do this in the past!

Red Kite - Ergh yep, so frustrating! Glad you managed to sort your problem though.

Muppet - sorry, that is kinda funny Smiley laugh Although very annoying I'd imagine!

Debbi - Yeah I have heard that they don't like strong smells like that, so I think I will try that, but it's getting rid of the smell that's already there that is difficult, it just seems to linger!

As for being poorly, she could be I suppose, but I know she doesn't do it everytime she needs to go. She is 13, our other cat is 6. They don't get on brilliantly, however they've lived together for 6 years, and in our old house she was fine (had a catflap there so no litter tray). We have been in this house for over 3 years though, and she's only been doing this on and off for the last year, and I can't think of anything that would have changed to stress her out. Our other cat is almost always outside all day, she doesn't like going out much during the winter, so stays in and has the house to herself. I don't think she likes it on the rare occasions the other cat uses the litter tray, but I don't think that's the sole reason she pees on the carpet. It is like she has forgotten how to go outside though, because when she does go out, she can be out nearly all day, yet the first thing she does is use the litter tray, or if the litter tray has been stuck outside, she'll use it outside Smiley atonished

Poor you, it’s so annoying when these things happen! I would take your cat to the vet, especially as she is older as it could just be a UTI or something similar which is causing her to do it. We have researched it loads recently and had a UTI ruled out by the vet, but If it helps at all, our dog has started peeing in the house and he is huge and there is so much of it when he ‘goes’ he literally floods the place – all our new flooring has started to peel up L Back to the vets again tonight for us!

    Good luck!

Our cat Tia used to do this when we first got her. We tried so many things but feliway really helped her to calm down. Another option is to put some food down where she is peeing (if it is the same place each time). Cats don't like to toilet where they eat so it might stop her.

If it has only started recently then it is probably a good idea to get her checked by the vets in case she has an infection.

Saying that, nothing worked for our other cat Bailey, who after a year decided that her would cr*p on the doormat all the time, despite the litter tray being right next to it!

Mav used to do this until I got two litter trays. He won't do number 1 in the same tray he'll do number 2, and if he feels the tray is too stinky, he'll go in the front room.
