Engagement ring flash and proposal stories!

Jayla, 15 March, 2014 at 10:42 Posted on Planning 0 53

Hello! I'm a bit bored and I love to hear engagement stories! Anyone care to share?

My oh proposed at the top of a hill on my 29th birthday. The same hill he first told me he loved me on. He'd always said he wouldn't get married so it was a big surprise. He chose the ring all on his own and I love it. Going to be a bugger to get a wedding ring to fit though.

Ooh great idea for a thread, and what a lovely romantic proposal!

My OH proposed in Central Park on our 10th anniversary - we'd gone to New York to celebrate and to be honest, if he hadn't proposed then I'd have been pretty fed up! It was a beautiful sunny day, we'd got up early and had waffles before going ice skating and then started walking around the park. We came across a lovely quiet spot overlooking a lake and after a few minutes of admiring the scenery, he went down on one knee. My ring was his grandmother's and I adore it. Off to a jewelers in 30 mins to order our wedding rings (having been to browse last weekend) - I'm so excited!

Ohhh I love a good engagement dtory too =) Cant flash my ring as Im at work.

My H2b and I went to stay at the savoy for my 30th Birthday. We spent the day out at Tower of London and the London Dungeons as ive havent been there since I was a child. When we got back to our room we were getting ready for dinner in the Hotel restaurant, The Savoy grill and alex said we should go and have a drink in the American bar, which is a cocktail bar within the hotel, before dinner. I wasn't expecting anything as we have been together 7 years and have just bought a house so didnt think he had any spare money, but when we were in the American bar he got down on one knee and proposed. It was the most amazing weekend and I will admit I did cry a little =)... had been really looking forward to the meal but I was on cloud nine and have to say i cant really remember much after that lol

Wow these are beautiful rings. I love the awestruck feeling where you could just stare at your ring all day! I remember on my way to work, the monday after our engagement, I got beeped at the lights because I was too busy gawping at my ring to notice that the lights had changed to green! Smiley winking haha. I'm completely in love with my ring, I never thought I'd be like this,.. I don't think I even owned a ring before.

Becca, we're marrying in New York, it's such an exciting city isn't it.

    Forgot to add my story!

We live in Manchester, and were walking home along the canal, near Castlefield. After a Friday night out at the cinema, we were walking home across this bridge, it was dark and quiet, and the trees were lit with little sparkly lights. Weirdly no-one else was about. He stopped me on the bridge and we were looking back at the skyline of the city. I was blabbering on about the Hilton hotel and when I looked back at him he was down on one knee with the ring in his hand!!! I was speechless. Completely surprised me!

We'd been to see 'I give it a year' and I'm hoping that's not a premonition!!

i absolutely adore my ring, it was from an antique jewellers in Manchester and I love to think about who wore it before me!

Yay! Any excuse to show off my ring!!

It was our '4.5 year anniversary'... 4 years previous we had gone to London for our '6 month' anniversary haha! We had planned to go on the Eye and then go to our favourite Gordon Ramsay restaurant but the both of us had an absolutely horrible cold that we'd had for weeks and weeks so we decided going out for a lovely meal would be a waste so we just went on the Eye.... he was being reeeaally shifty but I definitely didnt expect a proposal...anyway,it was at night so it was such a lovely view, seeing all the lights of the city.

We were then at the foot of the eye, lights twinkling in the trees and a busker playing beautiful music and I am jabbering about going to get some chips from McDonalds and he just stopped and looked at me like a rabbit in headlights and said 'Laura.... I have something to ask you..' and then got down on one knee!!

I couldn't believe it, I was crying and saying 'oh my god oh my god oh my god' and he had to say 'can you answer me cos im sh*tting myself down here!!' hahaha!!

We decided on the date that night! It was 18 months to the day!

Happiest day of my life! So surreal. He put a pic of the ring on facebook and just put 'she said yes' and our phones EXPLODED!! The next morning I cried in the local cafe over my full english just because I couldnt believe it and still cannot stop staring at my ring. It is just the most beautiful thing on the planet. He spent so much time, effort and money on it, researching clarity and cut etc... he really cared about it, which makes it even more special.

    13 beautiful diamonds..........❤️

We went away to Key Largo for a week and 3 days in all of us took a trip down to Key West so that we could see the legendary sunset. Upon arriving there James (my OH) said he had a surprise for me and said we needed to get a taxi there. We got in the taxi and it took us to the private section of the Key West international airport where we had a private helicopter waiting. Any way he had brought a hour long ride over the key west and its smaller islands we watched the sun set up there and just before landing he asked me to marry him over the headphone system. When we finally landed his entire family where at the airport and we where greeted with a champagne reception.

    It was perfet.

    Great idea for a thread!

I was at a staff night out. Got a few texts and a phone call from OH asking where I was/ when I was back which made me a little suspicious.

When I got home I noticed he'd put a wreath on our front door (it was nearly Christmas). It had a ribbon on it and the ribbon went through the letter box....

Opened the door and the ribbon went all the way through the house, either side of the ribbon were tea lights (apparently about 150) that went on a little path like a runway. I followed it through the house and out onto the little deck in the garden where he's put up fairy lights and a whole load more candles. Ribbon went to a box. He told me to go to it, opened the box and it was empty! In the lid it said 2I have a wee question to ask you" (He's Scottish). He later told me the ring box is made of New Zealand wood (where we met). I turned round to ask him where the ring was and he told me lots of lovely things and then got down on one knee. He chose the ring which is amazing, Love it.

It was great because it was in our new house and being late at night we didn't feel bad not telling people, we just enjoyed sitting with all the candles flickering and enjoying the moment.

I also nearly crashed because I was staring at my ring and didn't notice the traffic infront of me had stopped!

I can't flash my ring on my phone, but H2B proposed on my 21st birthday at sunrise while walking along the beach in the Caribbean. It was nice as we could tell folk via Facebook but still had 10 days to enjoy it ourselves before coming home to all the madness and excitement!

Any excuse to flash the ring! lol

Me and OH have been together for 13 years and he has known for year that I want to get married but he was reluctant as is twice divorced (I have never been married). He kept saying he was scared but that it would happen one day. I always said to him that he did decide to ask then I really wanted him to ask my dad permission first as I know it would mean the world to him (when my ex proposed my dad was a bit unhappy that he hadn't asked him first). Have to add that my dad has, on several occassions, asked OH when he was going to make an honest woman of me!

Anyway, just before Christmas (22nd to be exact!) we were in our local for the Christmas raffle having spent the afternoon having a little early Christmas with OH son and his family and we were just having a really good night. We were giggling, being silly and just having a really good laugh. He mentioned my dad and I asked if my dad had been giving him grief about marrying me again. He said he had but that it was his own fault. I asked why and he told me that he had asked my dads permission to marry me the day before. Yep, I cried.

We then rang everyone, went home and popped open one of the bottles of champagne we had got for Christmas and then OH daughter came round and OH got down on one knee and asked me if I would take him for my husband.

To me, the way he proposed was perfect and exactly as I always imagined he would do it, subtle and with no fuss xxx

    Aren't you a lucky lot!

we were on holiday in swanage 6 months after our son was born and walked past a jewellers and stopped to look and we were talking about rings and he asked me to pick one, then we arnt in and tried it on, the lady asked what the ring was for and he said an engagement rung and she said congrautlations. As we walked out he said 'I guess we're engaged then' and that was that, no fancy proposal or anything. I keep reminding me he hasn't asked me yet but I don't think he ever will lol! I chose a blue sapphire so I'd always be reminded of our holiday by the sea. That afternoon we walked on swanage pier which is covered ok commemorative plaques and last night we were taking about getting one for our wedding. Somewhere we can always go back and visit.

Here's mine. He proposed on holiday in Budapest on our second ananniversary. We'd just been for a meal and cocktails then walked to one of the city's highest points where he got down on one knee at midnight. This was our view.

Can't flash atm sorry, but I can tell our story.

My partner and I have been together 5 years and we've got 3 children (2 of which are his by blood) We've been friends for 13 too.
Anyway since having our first child together we've been talking about it and joking about it, then he bought me a ring but hid it away for the perfect moment, he was already to do it when my cousin announced they were marrying. So it got left in it's hiding place, then he was ready again and I fell pregnant and he didn't want people thinking he was doing it because I was pregnant. Then just after she was born he was all ready, we were on holiday in cornwall and one of his best friends asked his gf to marry him and had text to let Ollie know, so again it all went on hold (I've only found all this out since being engaged) I was beginning to feel like it would never come (I knew about the ring, long story) and was giving up on the idea thinking it would be a long time off. He started out as a photographer and he wanted to go and look around this fantastic venue that we both thought was beautiful as they had a wedding fair on, He kept on about going and I wasn't that fussed as I didn't want to go look at wedding stuff when I was getting married. He kept saying it was to look at wedding photographers to get inspiration. In the end I reluctantly agreed to go, leaving the kids with his mum. When we were there we were walking around these beautiful grounds, I was whinging about my shoes getting really muddy lol, next thing he's stopped by the fountain, I was looking at how beautiful the view was saying what a fantastic shot it would be for a wedding couple. turn back around and he's down on one knee. Unfortunately we aren't getting married at the venue as there is a huge lake, as much as we would've liked to, but we knew we would be worrying about the kids all day and we didn't want that.

Hi all, so many pretty rings! This is my 1st post but just couldn't resist sharing a pic of 'the shiny' ?

The proposal was pretty perfect for me too, we go indoor climbing every week. One week OH insisted on climbing 1st, which at the time I thought was rather un-gentlemanly! Once he'd climbed to the top of the wall he spent ages faffing around at the top before giving me the signal to lower him down. Then it was my turn to climb & when I got to the top there was a little bag clipped up there, from a jewellers I knew. I shouted down asking what it was & was told to open it & find out. The ring was one we'd seen when on holiday in Brighton a month earlier & I'd commented on how beautiful it was. He'd had the ring a month & managed to keep the secret all that time AND my sister was in on it the whole time!

I've not done a flash before, so i'm sorry if this doesn't come out right.. We had just celebrated our 10 year anniversary, I was hopping he was going to do it then.. but nothing Smiley sad

I went away on a hen do, and when I came home he was down on one knee with our girls either side if him, each holding the cutest bunch of flowers with their daddy holding out a box with the ring in it...

this is the short version of the story, there was a lot more planning that went into it, secret coded phone calls at the airport, a tidy house, a yankee candles burning (snow in love (cheese, I know but I love a bit of stilton)), girls dressed in their finest gear, a sneaky kiss from my dad as he dropped me at the door, a curtain up, a video camera propped on the table (although it went into standbye mode the thought was there), a few of the hens having to bite their tongue while we were away, champagne, tears, excited children that did very well not to slip up over the phone, meals out, links of London bracelet. the best bit is that I had absolutely no idea and had kind of given up thinking maybe one day. it was perfect for us, he did so well and I wouldn't change anything he did..

Love reading all these stories.. we are a bunch f very lucky girls.

    X

    Since you asked ;-)

we had been planning a wedding and even put a deposit down on a venue ... I was not yet divorced when he asked me to set up a wedding savings fund and said he would propose properly with a ring at some point when I was actually divorced .... my divorce came and went .. no ring .... we began looking at venues and had been saving ... chose a date, booked a band but still no ring! he took me for a surprise night away last weekend ... I was hoping this was it! I had no idea where we were going and he drove some odd route to put me off the scent! eventually we pulled up at the beautiful Oakley Court in Windsor which is where we have booked our wedding! he knew I wanted to do a recce as a guest as with 18 months to go we would not loose our deposit if we changed our mind. we got upgraded to the bridal suite and had complimentary prosecco on the terrace .... I knew he must be proposing so was just waiting to see when .. we went for a river side walk so thought this might be the moment ... but he didn't look like he had a box in his pocket! so walk finished and no proposal! I assumed he would do it in the room. so in full wedding planning mode we were chatting away and stopped by the fountain .. I suggested we walked over the function room and he said "no let's play a game .".. I was thinking " er no thanks"and as I looked up he said "it's called catch" and chucked my ring box at me!! I was actually surprised! ! I don't know how he had hid it ... he asked me to marry him and popped the ring on before I'd even said yes! well I guess it was pretty obvious I was in agreement since we were at our wedding venue! ! more prosecco on the terrace, a nice soak in the hot tub and dinner ... absolutely perfect for us xx

it won't let me add my pic!!

Some lovely stories and rings there ladies ?

Well, we'd been together for 7 years and it was my 30th birthday party last October, I had a Halloween fancy dress party and our song came on so (Queen, don't stop me now) so we got up to dance. I don't dance very often, but I will always dance with him to this song, he was being sweet and saying really nice things, which I cant remember at the minute, but I remember him saying to me, "i've wanted to do this for a long time", got down on one knee, in the middle of the dance floor, in front of all our family and friends, it took me a while to figure out what was going on, it was such a shock, he always said he never wanted to get married. He kept it quiet for 18 months and I think everyone was in as much shock as me. He also said "I know I don't do romance, but I do memorable". Dark horse that he is te he he. Still makes me smile like an idiot 5 months on.

    The proposal..

    The ring..

I've read everyone's stories and they're all so romantic!!

My H2B planned everything with my Mum because he wanted it to be perfect and she didn't even give me a clue! I knew we would one day get married, but I figured it would be a few years yet.

On Valentine's Day of this year, he planned a whole day of little surprises! I had never had a good Valentine's Day before, they'd all been awful for me! Or I'd been single! He wanted to make it my first good Valentine's. I got some beautiful diamond stud earrings in the morning along with my very own monster truck, then after work, there were flowers and a card. In the evening, we went on top of the hill to have a picnic in the car. It was blowing a gale and the rain was torrential. Several times, we thought the car would flip over due to the wind! We had our picnic and were all snuggled up enjoying watching the city at night when he proposed! My answer was.... "what?" But then I said yes!

    I was so surprised!!

Here is my ring, it looks a little tight in this picture, but actually, it fits perfectly. It's a family ring that my Mum knew I liked, she showed it to H2B and he asked to buy it off her to propose to me! (That's my cat under my hand!)

Such lovely stories and gorgeous rings!! For me, on my 30th birthday my OH got me a lovely watch n boots, which was more than enough, n then he lobbed a card at me n which said he was taking me to Le Manoir for dinner the next day, n that made me cry haha, I never knew I was such a wuss, but I'd always wanted to go there n couldn't believe he'd arranged it. So off we go all dressed up nice, have our beautiful five course lunch, n they put a candle and iced happy birthday plaque on my pudding plate n that was just delicious and fab. He told one of the waiters that we'd go for a wander around the grounds before coming back for a cuppa n it's just so pretty there, we were just meandering around n stopped by the Japanese gardens by the lake n he calls me over, starts saying all this lovely stuff, n then asks me to marry him. I was gobsmacked, as he likes to tell people I spent about ten minutes going 'really?! Are you sure?!' Over n over. N then I said yes :-D to be fair he did really well, he was a little quiet on the drive there n during pre lunch drinks but I just assumed he was a bit nervous about going somewhere new or something, never guessed what he was planning! he didn't propose with a ring cus he said he wanted to know I'd like it really (I'd have liked anything!) but he proposed with a little diamond ring charm for my bracelet...we went ring shopping together in the jewellery quarter a week or two later, only went for a look but fell in love with mine...

PS please ignore the chipped paint windowsill, dreadful rug n concrete floors...we bought a house last May and am doing some major redecorating!!

My OH popped the question last Sept. A few days before my birthday he threw me a HUGE suprise party....I was none the wiser but he was supposed to ask me in front of everyone. Unfortunately, his not so best man was late with the ring. It didn't matter though because after everyone had gone home and I was glowing in the awesomeness of his love, he asked me to be his wife. I was putting away my earrings and when I turned around he was there with the ring, tears streaming down his face. I was so shocked that I asked him if he was sure...WALLY!! Anyway, he picked the ring himself and knew I wanted something different. I love it so much and feel really lucky everytime I look at it. I think it was better in private because we got to enjoy the moment just the two of us for a few days, before sharing it with the world.

My first post, but I couldn't resist posting a picture of my ring, which, unsurprisingly I absolutely love!! It doesn't photograph too well, but it is stunning. He proposed on my 30th birthday - I'd booked us 3 days in Edinburgh to celebrate, and he proposed at the Castle on the morning of my birthday. It wasn't completely out of the blue, but I had no idea he'd put so much thought and planning in to it - I found out after that he'd spent 16 months researching/designing the ring with a jeweler friend of his. Which makes it all the more special. On the day, he was very serious - gave me my "birthday" gifts in the morning, (earrings and a bracelet), and then we went to the castle, where he spent most of the time complaining about the weather (it was February, so it was freezing). It started to hail, so we left, but as we came out into the outer courtyard the sun came out, and he went "let's go over there by the wall!" He walked me to a corner, where the wall meets the hill, so that we were out of the way of all the other tourists. He said "The sun's shining. I am your sunshine" and I started singing "you are my sunshine" to him (I sing it to him a lot). When I was done, he laughed and said "and on that note, will you marry me?" I turned around, and he had the ring box open in his hand. I gave him a huge hug and said "yes, please!" into his ear, and then I spent about 5 minutes just staring at the ring going "oh my god. holy ***. what did you do?!" then I asked him if he was going to put it on my finger, and he was all "why, are your hands cold?" Haha. We've been together almost 6 years so I was starting to think he'd never ask. We rang our families and told them, and then we spent 2 more days loved up in Edinburgh before coming back home and making the "official" announcement on facebook. That night we had a reservation at the Witchery, which is the most romantic restaurant ever - totally lit by candlelight, and we were facing the terrace as snow swirled outside. He kept staring at my ring, going "wow it really is sparkly!" I think he likes it almost as much as I do Smiley winking

What a fab idea for a thread. Some lovely stories and an amazing collection of rings; all so different!

Both me and my fiance have been married before. We both got divorced 2 years ago. OH doesn't wear his heart on his shoulder and is the kindof practical guy who thinks that a mortgage and a dog should be comitment enough ? so I had stopped waiting for him to pop the question a long time ago.

We enjoy 'quirky' holidays so our trip to a Martello Tower in Suffolk recently wasn't anything unusual. On our second night there I went up to the rooftop with our labrador for 'puddles'. It had been a stormy day so we'd whiled away the hours infront of the log burner downstairs however the evening was dry and peaceful and an amazing sunset presented itself. I was stood on the parapet taking a photograph on my mobile phone when OH appeared. He came to stand next to me and wrapped his armd around me. Again, nothing unusual with that. Then he just casually says 'so will you marry me?' Well, I could have fainted! Infact, I was so intent on turning to face him without falling off the parapet that I almost forgot to say yes!!

The frustrating thing was that we were in the middle of nowhere, with no phone signal so we couldn't even tell anybody until 2 days after the proposal when we walked into the next village for OH's birthday lunch ️?️

He hadn't dared choose a ring for me but wanted to give me something and so presented me with a rubber o-ring (I told you he is a practical kinda chap!). He then told me that he'd spotted a little local jeweller in the town we were staying and that we would be going there in the morning to choose a ring. We did and 2 days later collected it before heading home from our holiday.

The trilogy stones were important to us as although our past marriages did not work out, without them we'd not be the people we are today and we'd never have met. Recognising our past, enjoying the present and looking forward to the future has been a sentiment that we acknowledged very early in our relationship so a trilogy ring seemed to fit the bill perfectly. I originally thought I'd like emerald cut diamonds however fell in love with this in the jewellers window and have the added bonus of it sitting better with a wedding band so it was the perfect choice.

    The ring...

    The sunset...

thank you all for sharing your stories and gorgeous rings. I've loved them all! I often think if like a different ring - one a bit less plain (poor man - plain was exactly what I wanted af the time!) but then I look down at it and love it as much as the first time I saw it. We went to Spain for OH's 40th, to a place he used to live. We went up in to the mountains and he proposed by the lighthouse with an amazing view of the sea. Perfect. It was just 4 months and 8 days since we met and we get married exactly 12 months after our engagement Smiley smile
