Hello! I'm a bit bored and I love to hear engagement stories! Anyone care to share?

My oh proposed at the top of a hill on my 29th birthday. The same hill he first told me he loved me on. He'd always said he wouldn't get married so it was a big surprise. He chose the ring all on his own and I love it. Going to be a bugger to get a wedding ring to fit though.

    Ah, don't feel sad.

My 'proposal' was in a shopping centre. It was kind of a mutual agreement too as opposed to a "will you marry me" moment.

We've been together years (will be 11 years on the day we marry), sometimes I think that when you get to that stage it changes things.

Im sure you'll get a ring and a proposal of sorts soon!

Don't have a picture of my ring on my work computer, it is a vintage style solitaire ruby with diamond shoulders.

Anyway, our engagement story is a bit of a mish mash. Around September last year we started discussing what we would do 'if' we got married, these discussions escalated to us half planning our theoretical wedding. We hadn't actually discussed getting engaged at that point! In November we made a provisional booking to look at our venue, and ending up booking it for September 2014. Still not engaged, and still haven't told anyone! End of November, OH asks my Dad's permission to marry me. We start looking at rings. OH won't tell me if or when he is going to get the ring. So we have a venue booked, parents know, but we aren't actually engaged.

18th December I come home from work, house is eerily quiet. OH is in the dining room. I go in, and he has lit 100 tealight candles (think Chandler & Monica Friends proposal - we are both huge fans!), gets down on one knee with the ruby ring I had picked. It was perfect and we got there eventually!

I wanted to post mine all weekend but couldn't flash while posting on my tablet! Argh so frustrating. Anyway...

My H2B and I got together in Oct 2012 after being friends for over 10 years. We knew straightaway it was serious (I had our initials tattooed on my arm after only 6 weeks together!) and started talking marriage pretty quickly. We started planning to move in together in early 2013 but had complicated situations due to leases and flatmates etc. I started looking at rings online in the meantime and saw one I loved on etsy, but a couple weeks later I noticed it had been sold, and was gutted.

Then one evening in May we were sat in my living room watching Match of the Day when he suddenly produced the ring from his pocket and dropped to one knee. He had secretly bought it and been acting for weeks! Here it is. It's from the late 1950s - a ruby with tiny diamonds in the shank in white gold.

Love seeing all the beautiful rings and lurve stories! My fiance took me away on a surprise weekend to an amazing spa hotel on an island but then ended up proposing in the hotel room because I was too lazy to go for a walk after dinner! (In my defense it was dark, cold and I only had high heels with me!). He proposed with his Grandmother's ring as he knew I wanted to choose my own but wanted to have something to give to me. His lovely Mum later said I was welcome to use the diamond from her mother's ring to make my own ring so now I have the nicest ring with a sentimental stone! The gold is before and the platinum is mine now Smiley smile

Ah there are some lovely stories here!! AND some lovely rings! WOW! Our OH's do pull it out of the bag sometimes Smiley smile

My OH had mentioned a week before he wanted to go for a walk in the Wirral near where we have picnics when it is nice, as I'd already booked my hair appointment he came with me, then we drove over to the beach/nature park. Just before we turned into the car park though, some idiot who wasn't looking pulled out right in front of my car! So I was shall we say not in the best moods after nearly having my new car side swiped, and my OH leaving the lights on in the car whilst at the hairdressers! We pull up and park, and I refuse to go to the beach because the track was so muddy and miserable I didn't want to get mucky!

So we marched off with all the dog walkers, then about a mile in he held my hand and said 'I wanted to go to the beach today, because I always said Id dump you on the beach at least then it would be pretty but instead I wanted to propose!' He then got down on one knee and held out the box!! I asked him if he was joking.... ? Haha! I was so shocked, I didn't have a clue... About 5 minutes later he said 'you haven't said yes yet'! So I said yes Smiley smile and then just stared at my hand the whole way back to the car because I didn't know what to say! So overwhelming!

He designed my ring too at a local jewellers (we're both big on supporting independant retailers) & he knew I didn't want a diamond and that I wanted an emerald Smiley smile

    Love reading these stories!

Christmas 2012 I found this beautiful engagement ring at the bottom of my stocking! I was really so surprised and couldn't believe it when I opened it and then looked up to find my other half down on one knee in front of me! It was the best Christmas ever ?

    I love this thread!

I knew from our first holiday in Venice after about a year of going out that I wanted to spend my life with him. It took him 6 years to realise the same! Little did I know he would pop the question in the exact same spot we spent a quiet evening alone together the first time we visited Venice, sipping wine on a jetty on the grand canal. My OH isn't the sentimental/romantic type, so this shocked me beyond belief. He did it exactly as I would have wanted, without us actually discussing it. No one was around to see it, it was in a special place that took him ages to find (remember this is over 5 years later and only so far Google maps can do in places like Venice), he didn't ask for permission as he knows I would hate that, he didn't get down on one knee and he let me choose my ring when we got home. I'm still amazed every time I tell the story.

Flash time, sorry if huge and blanking our faces to maintain a smidgen of privacy.

    Here is us in 2008:

And us in the same spot where he proposed in October 2014 (not the best quality photo unfortunately):

Strangely, similar to EdenNI the OH proposed with his grandmother's ring which we then used the stones from to create a new one entirely (a large Sapphire and two small diamonds- cant flash on tablet though grrrr).

We went on our annual spring holiday and he asked me in front of a roaring log fire in a cabin on a lake. Very sweet. We've been together for so long now I think our families nearly died of shock Smiley smile

I can't flash at the moment but have to say we are engagement ring twins RomanticIvoryHair112!

H2B proposed in our house that we spent 2 years building together. We had arranged to go out for a nice meal when at the last minute i did the whole "i have nothing to wear, my hair needs washing and i feel fat" thing so we ended up staying in! H2B suggested we have a nice meal instead and after dinner we sat on the sofa listening to music, he called our pug over to sit on the sofa with us and he'd tied the ring to his collar, and of course while i was trying to figure it all out he popped the question there and then. Apparently i'd ruined his whole "going out to dinner" plan but he did me proud with the emergency back up. It felt so right to do it in the house we built together.

Ahh, really?! I do love it. What kind of wedding ring are you going for? I'm probably going to have mine made to fit snuggle around it.

Ok here's my love story. Started 39 years ago on a school trip. He stole my Mars bar and we became an item for about 6 weeks. Then one day I went to see him and he'd gone to play footy with his mates so that was that lol.

Roll forward 33 years and we've both had lives and moved around and through Friends Reunited he found me, on my own and living just 30 miles away. He was on his own and his daughter encouraged him to drop me a line to see if I remembered him. We fell in love immediately again, and have been together ever since. He was so scarred from past lives that he never wanted to get married again. He knew I did, but I was never going to put any pressure on, being together was more important, and I was resigned to it never happening.

Roll forward 5.5 years to last June when we were on holiday in our fave spot of Betws Y Coed. We'd had a lovely long weekend with family and sent them home so it was just us. We'd had a lovely long walk and we're sitting in our fave pub having a drink. He'd been to the bar and came back with the usual and sat down. He said "I've been thinking" puzzled I looked at him and said, "oh yes, go on - this could be dangerous, it usually is". He said, " I think we should get married". You could have knocked me down with a feather. I just looked at him and said, pardon. His response, I've been thinking why we shouldn't all this time, when actually all I can really think of are reasons why we should. He had no ring, it really had just occurred to him and was a massive step.

He proposed formally when we had a ring when we were back in Bewts in September. That's our true love story and I adore it. Here's my ring.

it really is lovely seeing all the lovely rings and stories. Wonderful thread idea.

I LOVE THIS THREAD. I have been waiting all morning for it to be lunchtime so i can legitimately post on here in my own time.

My OH and i have together for 5 and a half years, 2 years ago he joined the army. I don't see him very often and when i do he is TERRIBLE at being romantic or thoughtful. this valentines day as he came up the flat stairs i could hear rustling, got excited and thought i was getting flowers only for him to plonk his wash bag in my arms full of uniform. The only card i have ever received from him (birthday or otherwise) was a blank one, as my only gift for my birthday, because he thought i would like it to give to someone else.My friends love to laugh at this!

We booked a 70's airstream caravan in August for a week (around our 5 year anniversary), in Wales. When we got there, OH mentioned that he wanted to go up the side of the valley to watch the Perseid meteor shower which was whizzing around planet earth at the time. At about 11oclock in the evening, he handed me lots of jumpers and off we went.
He parked at the top of a huge hill. it was completely pitch black, the sky was so clear and the view of the shooting stars was incredible.. noone else was around for miles and it was lovely! OH put blankets on the bonnet of the car which we laid on, We chatted for a while, held hands and just watched the stars. He brought a flask of tea and some biscuits (thank you military for providing him with some planning skills...). After a bit He clambered off the bonnet to get something out of the car, asked me to sit up and came back round and dropped to one knee before saying 'Insert full name here...will you do me the honour of marrying me' before producing THIS...

I said ''YES but get off the grass because it might be wet'. And that was that! Then he produced a bottle of champagne and some glasses from my mum because the night before we came away he called a family pow wow and asked my mum, dad and sister. That last bit made me cry as i know everyone will have been pleased to have been involved. they were waiting with baited breath for the outcome! We then called his mum, who had no idea beforehand as she doesnt understand the concept of secrets, who cried and texted us a Youtube link for Cliff Richard's song 'Congratulations'...which was hilarious.

Turns out he had the ring for NINE MONTHS in his laptop bag (the only thing i dont dare touch..!) trying to plan the perfect thing. Which it was and when i tell other people it sounds like something out of a film!

    Hi girls!

My OH & me went to Berlin, Germany for my 21st birthday (I'm a massive history geek).

Anyway, on my 21st birthday, we went to Brandenburg gate at sunset so we could get some nice photos of the lights on the gate.

He saw some German's who were waiting for the sun to go down so they could get some good photos (They had massive DSLR's and proper photography equipment). He walked up to them and asked them to take a couple of photos of us infront of the gate using our camera (little did I know, they were in the background taking shots on their own cameras). We posed, HTB said he needed to tie his shoe, I turned to the side and saw him holding a ring box (which he dropped haha) but other than that, it was the perfect proposal.

Love reading everyones stories & looking at the rings Smiley smile

I got engaged last September in Bulgaria:

We had talked about getting married for a while beforehand & had looked at rings (im quite fussy, and didnt see one I really liked). I had said I always liked the idea of getting married on our 10 year anniversary which is in 2017, so there was no hurry, despite lots of friends asking.

We had booked to go back to the same hotel we went to for our first holiday just the 2 of us in 2008, which afterwards he told me is why he wanted to go back so much...so he could propose to me in the same place we took our first holiday together!

One evening he said lets go for a walk on the beach. We were just casually walking along talking about how it would be great to see a storm whilst on the beach, and then he said to me 'I have a question for you' and so thought hes going to question my geography knowledge (I did a geography degree at uni). I turned around to him, and he was on one knee in the sand, next to the sea, and asked 'will you marry me?'

I stood there in complete shock, and apparently didnt answer for quite a while, but in the end said of course and hugged him. Whilst we were hugging a wave came crashing over our feet. I was so shocked I barely spoke and he said its the quietest he's ever seen/heard me!

When we got back to the hotel I looked at the ring properly....he designed it himself based on the styles I liked and even picked the diamond for it. It was hand made especially for me, and he had been planning on proposing since we booked our holiday at the beginning of the year. He even made sure to ask my dads permission before he proposed.

I later found out he hid the ring in a box of shuttlecocks that I had found in his bag whilst unpacking which he had said he left in their accidently, and he had even been searched at the airport.
