engagement ring on the day?

AmzieM, 7 August, 2013 at 09:44 Posted on Planning 0 21

Has anyone or going to wear your engagement ring on the day? from the beginning or late on in afternoon?

i'm having a bit of problem to decide. i dont want to as i think the wedding ring is the main ring for people to look at on the day. but my wedding ring is a bit big so dunno if engagement ring will help keep it in place. (not getting it adjusted til after honeymoon to mexico in case fingers swell up from the heat).

and are you having it cleaned before hand? i dont think i wil have time or money to.

I did, I only moved it from my left to my right hand shortly before the exchanges of rings & then moved it back so I had both on for the day. My wedding ring was smaller than the ER so I put the wedding one outside to keep it in place. I didn't have mine cleaned - didn't even notice if it needed it!

A lot of people say they wear their engagement ring on their right hand and swap it over once the wedding ring's on. I may just have to remove mine and put it back during the ceremony though because it doesn't quite fit the finger on my right hand. If I were you I'd wear it on the day.

I've not tried to clean my ring myself yet but I've had it valued recently and the jeweller said use a very soft baby's toothbrush with some fairy liquid and warm water. My ring is diamond, sapphire and platinum fyi. I'm sure that tip would work on other materials too but maybe best asking around. I'm sure others will have some tips too.

I kept mine on because I'm wearing them the 'wrong way round' with my wedding ring on the outside Smiley smile TBH nobody asked to look at my ring on the day

I'm wearing mine, hubby gets upset if I don't plus I feel naked now without it. Getting it cleaned when I pick up my wedding ring as they need to shape it around the diamond so they need it for a few hours to finish, polish and clean.

I'm leaving it on my left hand and wedding ring is going on top. My engagement ring is slightly too big. Also I think you get the engagement ring first then the wedding ring so for me I'm putting the wedding ring on top. I don't think it matters what way as long as your happy. I'm getting it cleaned and polished before hand. It's diamond and platinum so looks amazing when its all shiney.

Mine is too and this works great. I got it cleaned by the jeweller before the wedding because nothing quite beats how shiny they can get it but all other times I've used the above method.

I was rebellious and wore mine all day, where it usually is. It got there first, I love it to bits, and it felt wrong to switch it. So H just put the wedding band on as usual but my ER was already there.

Me wedding ring arrived last week and highlighted that I'll need to get my ER cleaned/polished, does anyone know roughly how much this costs? It's a diamond and platinum one if that makes a difference.

My mum kept hold of my ring during the ceremony then handed it back to me when she came up to sign the regiter!

I wore my EG ring on the day and put my wedding ring over the top (the "wrong" way round) during ceremony.

I didn't want to take it off after wearing it for 3 years and thought it odd to change them over and wanted to keep continuation. The priest didn't mind and not a single person noticed Smiley smile I have been married nearly 6 years and haven't changed it round since, this also keeps the EG ring in place Smiley laugh

Where did you buy it? My jeweller does mine free of charge.

    If not, I think it's about £20-£30.

I'm wearing my ER on my right hand. It's a beautiful, big, cornflower blue opal, and I based my colour scheme on it, so I'm definitely wearing mine on my right had finger.

They did mine for free - mine is also diamond and platinum. I wanted it shined up more than just me giving the stone a buff with a toothbrush because I had scuffed up the band and it didn;t look very shiny compared to my wedding band. Initially they just gave it a scrub up in cleaning solution but I went back and asked for it to be polished properly. They buffed it on a machine. If the ring is white gold I believe they have to be re-plated but with platinum I believe they just buff it and it takes just a few seconds.

I wore ER on right hand and swapped it onto left hand before we even left the church. I was asked to show it a few times on the day, not by everyone but by a few! OH's aunt always gets her specs out to give it a close inspection, then usually likes to ask me how much I weigh......and how tall I am........and generally stand in my personal space. ;-)

Thanks, it's from 77 Diamonds (online) so I think I'll have to go to a shop, I'm assuming it's something that all jewellers will do?

Yep, any can do it easily. I had mine cleaned where I bought it at Mappin and Webb but took it to a jewellers on Fleet Street near my office to get it polished. I was picking up some cufflinks I had bought and he just said "Oh they have just dropped that in the sonic cleaner not properly polished it, I can do it for you for free" so I handed it straight over, quicksticks! :-)

I wore my ER on my right hand and switched just after the civil ceremony and before the blessing. I didn't wear mine day to day beforehand (I work in hospital, so rings with stones are banned!) so I wasn't as attached to it as some people are. As for cleaning, the company we made our wedding rings with cleaned and polished my ER for free at the same time as polishing our WRs.

I'll probably just wear mine on the same finger on the day, don't really bother with these sort of things so unless it'll be more convenient / comfy etc i'll just keep engagement on n put wedding ring on beside that. And I'll probably give it a clean myself before hand, we're not too fussed about the rings and not big jewellery wearers at the best of times and I don't think many people will ask to see them at ours tbh Smiley smile

I will be as my wedding ring is a wishbone shape and the stone of my engagement ring fits nicely with it. It would probably look strange without it!

    Hi

Think my mum will have my engagement ring until I'm ready to put it back on. Will defiantly be getting my engagement re dipped and cleaned before hand.

My engagement ring will be staying in place, the wedding ring will slide on after.

My engagement ring is an odd shape(OH designed it), so I'm having to get a wedding ring especially made too, this is the stacking I'm happiest with Smiley smile

Mine doesn't fit on my right hand (diff sized hands it seems) so my mum kept engagement ring in her purse, and then I put it on part way through the evening once everyone had done the 'looking at the ring' and so on. I had mine cleaned but only because compared to my wedding ring, it obviously needed it.
