Engagment Rings - something a bit different?

snow bride, 11 March, 2013 at 15:58 Posted on Planning 0 20

Hello all, new member here ?

I am very pleased to be joining you all as I got engaged to my wonderful (now) fiance yesterday morning Smiley smile

He's very kindly allowed me to chose my own engagment ring and I'll be honest I'm struggling! I've been married before and last time had the traditional platinum band with a princess cut diamond, ill be honest to this day I love it and still think it's gorgeous. I know that if I went for another solitaire style I'd struggle to find one I liked as much as my old one and to be honest think it would be weird to go for something too similar.

So I'm looking for something completely different! It's looking likely to be a long engagement (we have a 7 week old son, so won't be able to afford it yet!) so something more bandy would work Smiley smile

Did anyone else have something a bit different? I'd love to hear some ideas!

Snowy x

    Hi congratulations,

    Try this link

    https://www.hitched.co.uk/chat/forums/t/209419.aspx?PageIndex=1

It should hopefully take you to a very long thread with lots of engagement ring photos. Have you thought about including coloured gemstones in the design? I have a central diamond with two pear shaped sapphires either side and its exactly what I wanted.

I went for something antique as they're often a bit different from the norm.

Can recommend this place which is where we got mine from

    Congrats on the engagement!

I always wanted sapphires in mine and didn't want the sapphire to be the 'focal' stone so this is my one:

Excuse the crap photo (that somehow makes my fingers look very old, ahh!)

What about 'building' your ring on here: https://www.bluenile.com/uk/build-your-own-ring?track=hero1

It might give you some ideas? This is what I did originally as a joke but my fiancé ended up buying a similar one and completely taking me by surprise with the proposal!

I HATE diamonds, so my OH decided to get me a unique ring. He bought a silver ring with Blue John stone. Blue John is local to me, so he wanted to get me something of my local area to have with me wherever I go.

(Top ring is my 'promising ring' that he gave me. Iolite and Marcasite. The one below is the Blue John.)

If your local area has a stone, that might be an idea. Or, if not, why not your birthstone?

Oh yeah, thats the other thing - sapphire is my birth stone - september. I forgot to say earlier why I wanted sapphires!

I also have sapphires although definitely not a band style and I may struggle when we have small children as the edges are pretty pointy and sharp!

This is mine, it's white gold and diamond.

I originally wanted a coloured stone but he wanted diamonds so he picked this as its still a bit different whilst being traditional too.

OT- Meltycat where are you from. I'm in Buxton so not too far from blue John country!

This is my ring - it is so much more sparkly in real life, the picture does it no justice whatsoever! It's a band but still has the 'blingyness' of an engagement ring.

Just wanted to chip in to say that my fiancé surprised me with a non-traditional E-Ring from Blue Nile (as t4yt0 suggested above) that he designed himself. We're temporarily living in New York, so it was the US version of the site - but the quality was excellent and the staff so helpful - I needed it to be resized and although it was horrible to have to send it away, the service was quick and professional. He also said they were so helpful on the phone during the buying process, giving him advice on diamonds and styles of rings etc (he wanted it to be a complete surprise, but knew nothing about rings/metals/stones!) I'm sure the UK people would be just as brilliant at helping you decide on a non-traditional ring!

Mine is, or was (I lost it ?) three emerald cut diamonds with the centre stone being larger and the two side stones smaller, in white gold. I LOVED it and received sooo many compliments. It was insured so I'm currently having a new one made in the same design!

I think this would be nice and squared off if you like the princess cut style but still different to your princess solitaire which you had previously. OR you could have a coloured stone in the middle.

Hi (also a new member, hello)

I had my heart set on having an opal in my engagement ring, but really struggled to find one I liked in the shops. Eventually I gave up and went to a local jewellery designer in Salisbury (www.elinorcambray.com) and had one made for me. I absolutely love my ring, its white gold, with an opal flanked by two garnets (had a matching plain wedding band made at the same time).

This is mine, it's a green amethyst surrounded by diamonds and set in white gold. I knew I wanted a big stone as I have monkey sausage paws so a small ring would have been lost! I went semi precious and large rather than precious and small. I absolutely adore my ring.

It's so fun but kinda stressful picking ur own ring! I got to pick my own ring (sorry cant seem to get pic uploaded!) and kinda felt that I always needed to go to one more shop just in case although I found one I loved in like the 2nd one! My ring is a round stone in the middle and 2 baguette diamonds either side which I havnt seen many people with, and it will be easy to find wedding band to fit at a straight one sits flush! It's so exciting picking ur ring Smiley smile make a lovely day (or 6) of it Smiley smile

Wow, this thread is very helpful!!! I really really want to put an exotic stone on my wedding ring, but was worried if it is okay to do so, after all, I see diamonds everywhere... Me and my husband met at the Dominican Republic and Larimar is a local gemstone there. I already own a few larimar earrings, and now I'm determined to buy a perfect ring for me.

Thanks a lot everyone for all the information!

I think it depends on what you mean by "different". If you like the classic look of the princess solitaire there are plenty of other designs that will still look classic yet be different from your previous ring. Have you thought about a halo? Or a three stone ring? One of my BMs has a gorgeous three stone princess cut ring. Before I decided on my current ring I was leaning toward a round center stone with two tapered baguette sidestones, which is another timeless design. Or you could stick with the solitaire but choose a different center stone shape or add some pave/channel set diamonds along the band.

I want to put in another plug for Blue Nile. Ultimately we went with James Allen, which is another company that is very similar, but we strongly considered Blue Nile. We were able to pick the design, the center stone and then I also had them add some milgraining onto the setting to give the ring a more vintage feel. It didn't cost any extra to customize the existing setting. I'm not 100% sure about Blue Nile but I imagine they would have similar options available.
