Epilators - updated

Diamond Star Halo, 9 June, 2008 at 16:04 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 9

Firstly, are they really terribly awfully painful? I am used to waxing (although fed up with the faff of it). And I wouldn't be using it anywhere except my legs.

Secondly, can you recommend any particular type?

Well, I got a bit carried away, and popped out to Argos to buy a Braun Silk-epil xelle (had £15 off). Have tried it out, and am quite pleased. It's not horribly painful at all - no worse than waxing, although it took longer. Hurrah. Quite impressed so far anyway. Cheers for all your input.

They're not particularly painful, but they are absolutely awful to use on your legs. They don't do a good job, they snap the hair off just below the skin rather than pulling it out, your legs never look or feel smooth, the ingrowing hair is horrendous... Need I say more?

I use mine for my underarms and sometimes my bikini line and shave my legs.

Not at all painful for legs, underarms are quite painful but gets better after a few times.

I would recommend the Braun Silk epil Xelle. I've been using that for a few years now and it works perfectly. No trouble with ingrowing hairs either!

If your waxing at the moment, then i would say you have nothing at all to fear !

I am a bit of a Tit !! [:'(] when it comes to any form of pain, but am a regular user of my epilator.

The one i have is a Philips and comes with a Ice - pack thing, but as i'm so brave now i no longer have to use it.

I've been looking at the silk-epil xelle.... a bit put off by the price, but I guess it doesn't take long to spend that much on wax strips or razors really.

I hate mine. Its painful beyond belief and never gives a smooth finish. When I've used it, my skin is red and bumpy so looks really unsightly. I've no idea why as I'm used to waxing and that doesn't hurt one bit.

I know it's not the cheapest, but it is really good. It pulls the hairs out properly, doesn't snap off. It also the only I've ever used that I don't find painful. It comes with one of those ice packs and a "beginner" setting. I never had to use the ice pack and switched the "advanced" setting within minutes. Easy to pack as well, comes in handy travelbag.

I bought one a few months ago now and still haven't plucked up the courage to use - the noise scared me !

It's the Braun one with the ice pack - if it doesn't seem to weird to buy second hand (although not use) let me know if you are interested.

I'm the same, bought one when it was half price. I used it once but it was taking ages, I'd have been there all night doing my armpits and i'm not THAT hairy lol!

Boots have got 1/3 off some of their Braun epilators at the moment.

I got one a couple of years ago. I don't find it painful to use, but do find it is time consuming, and I've never thought it gets rid of all the hairs (I find a similar problem with waxing - I think they've all gone, then a few days later find some lurking). I do prefer it to shaving though - although I have the odd stray hair afterwards I'm not stubbly 24 hours later. I only use my own my legs though, I shave my armpits as it only takes a minute.

I've also got the Philips Ice one and I'm impressed with it.

I had one previously (can't remember the make but it was in a yellow bag) and it was awful and like Sophie M has said, it just snapped the hair.

I went back to getting waxed but found waiting for appointments etc a hassle and heard epilators were better so opted for the Philips one.

It's very noisy but I don't fund it painful and don't use the ice pack, it doesn't last as long as waxing but so much more convenient to use. I too have the red bumps so know that I can't bare my legs straight after but then again I had this with waxing too.

    Overall, I like it!
