ER and WR in different metals?

Mrs*W*2B, 9 December, 2011 at 13:38 Posted on Planning 0 5

Hi,

I am not expert in jewellery and so i have a possibly stupid question...

My engagement ring is a palladium band with diamonds on the band and a bigger diamond in the middle (technical terms obviously!!), we wern't going to even think about wedding rings yet BUT we have been collecting tesco vouchers for ages and tesco currently have an offer on where you can exchange £10 of clubcard vouchers for £40 of goldsmiths vouchers which means we could get both rings for free (woo!!) I have always wanted a very plain band (no sparkle etc, litrally a plain band) and you can get these from goldsmiths, however the price were looking at they only have them in white gold. I am fine with white gold and, palladium is the same colour but I had a sudden thought that you are supposed to get your wedding and engagement ring in the same metal (even if they are both silver in colour) has anyone else got their ER or WR in different metals? didn't want to order until we knew

Also has anyone had the goldsmith tesco vouchers before, if we get them now do they have an expiry date on them incase we can't find what we want straight away?

Thanks Smiley smile x

I may be wrong but i thought it was advised not to put differning metals together as one will be stonger and make the other weaker. the palladium ring will be stronger than the white gold ring and i think over time this will cause damage to your wedding ring

I was under the impression that white gold and palladium wouldn't mix well either due to different levels of hardness. Also, I think they will start to look different over time. Palladium goes quite dull whereas white gold will start to turn back to yellow gold and need re-dipping.

I'm sure the jeweller would be able to advice, but if I were you I'd just get your OH's in white gold and keep searching for yours.

Eventually there will be damage to both rings, no matter what material you use. It is better to have the same metals but its not important if they sit comfortably together. The colour of white gold and palladium ARE different though. I have a palladium engagement ring and my wedding ring is white gold and palladium mixed together. The wedding ring is much more gold than my engagement ring when you put them together.

Also even if they are different metals and they do wear each other down it will take absolutely years and years. Probably at least a few decades before its noticeable.

We exchanged our tesco vouchers for Goldsmiths vouchers and they come with an expiry date on. Think it's about 6 months ish so you should have time to decide.
