Essential group shots for photographer?

Milly_Bride, 25 August, 2015 at 18:51 Posted on Planning 0 8

Hi all! We're in the final stages now (11 days to go woo!) and need to send a list of group shots we want to our photographer. I don't want to send some huge list that will take hours to achieve as a) we don't have hours and b) we chose him for a more natural reportage feel. However we will want some group photos I would have though, if only for gifts for parents! I am slightly struggling to narrow down which we want though, there are just so many possible permutations. We have about an hour and a half between ceremony and wedding breakfast and would like to spend some time with our guests if at all possible.

So, what shots did you feel were the most essential? Were there any that you regretted not being taken? If you had to choose only 6-8 more formal group shots which would you have chosen?

Apart from the norm if I had guests I would do a pic with any still living grandparents. I would also do a pic of m one on one with each bridesmaid. If you ever end up being bridesmaid for them they are nice to have side by side. First look with parents. I think those would be my choice.

I think I'm still wondering what the 'norm' is?!

Do we have pics with just the bride and parents/bride and siblings/bride and all immediate family and then the same for the groom? That alone accounts for six shots! Or do we just have pics of both of us with each side of the family and then all the family together? My sisters are my BMs which makes things simpler at least Smiley smile

Thanks for the suggestions so far, how long do you think it would take to do around 10 shots of various permutations of the bridal party?

We probably won't do friends shots formally, so maybe just be something like this:

    Bride + parents

    Bride + sisters/bridesmaids

    Bride + parents + sisters

    Groom + parents

    Groom + parents + brother

    Groom + best man

Bride + groom + both sets of parents

Bride + groom + parents and siblings

Bride + groom + BMs, usher and best man

    Whole wedding party

There's lots of overlap in terms of who will be in the photos so only requires wrangling about 10-12 people overall... doable?? Would you include partners of the bridal party in the above shots? H2Bs brother/usher is married, and one of my sisters is in a long term relationship. They are part of the family so wondering which shots to include them in.

    Hiya,

For what it's worth, here's our list of recommended formals.

These shots to be taken BEFORE the ceremony

    Close up Bride,

    Full length Bride

    Bride & Bridesmaids

    Bride & Dad

    Groom

    Groom & Best Man

    Best Man

    Groom, Best Man and Ushers.

    After the ceremony:

    Signing the register

Bride and Groom walking up the aisle

    Bride & Groom close up

    Bride & Groom full length

    Confetti shot.

    Everyone*

    Bride & Groom (Various shots)

Bride, Groom, Parents, Best Man, Bridesmaids, Ushers (The Bridal party)

Bride, Groom, Bride’s parents, brothers, sisters, their partners and children

Bride, Groom, Groom’s parents, brothers, sisters, their partners and children

Bride & Groom, mock cutting of the cake

This covers the photographs most people want. We always recommend that you allow five minutes per group shot, to give you a good idea how long it will take. we're pretty good at organising people and it can still be painfully slow.

One way to get over this is to forewarn all the people that will be in the pics that they need to hang around, and NOT GO TO THE BAR!

It's always the Dad's who dissapear!!!

Also, you'll notice there are some pics that can be taklen before the ceremony, as they are taken with the Bride and Groom seperately. If you don't get them done before, you have to add all that time to after...

Not to put a downer on this but we provided a list to our TOG and he didn't bother with it, which is one of the reasons I'm quite disappointed with our photos. Perhaps put an usher in charge of ticking them off the list with the TOG?
