Eternity Rings

Mellow_Yellow, 11 October, 2012 at 16:52 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 55

Inspired by VPs (aka JC) post, and Flow's response...

when did you get yours, or when do you hope to get it?

I hope to get one at some point after we have a child. If we don't manage to have children, perhaps on a 5th/10th anniversary? I know what I'd like though ?

    This for me also!

Though I doubt H would want to spend the money just after having a baby. And at the moment my engagement ring doesn’t even fit ☹️

I got mine on our first anniversary too. Again I didn't know I was getting it. I think my H thought he'd better buy one now while we can afford it! ?

I've told my H not to buy me an eternity ring for when I have the baby (or any kind of 'push present') as I didn't have one for my other two children and I don't want to have something for one and not the others.

I told him that I do need an eternity ring at some point as I've left my engagement ring to my daughter and my wedding ring to my son in my will and need a ring for my unborn daughter. ?

I didn't know the tradition about giving them after the first child is born. I always assumed it was an anniversary thing. Something you would get at a vow renewal (not that I see the point in these unless you've split up and got back together) or your 10th anniversary, not sure why.

I have been dropping mega hints since being pregnant. I only have a plain wedding band (my Nan's ❤️) so I NEED some extra sparkle.

I got mine for our first anniversary(total surprise), delivered with a lovely speech about how he knew the tradition was for the first baby, but as we were having problems and had been trying for years he wanted to show that it didn't matter if it never happenned, plus lots of other soppy stuff. I cried. A lot. ?

I don't want one, tbh. I have two gorgeous rings and that's all I'll ever wear on my hands - I never normally wore rings before marriage. I wouldn't be allowed to wear it at work, and I barely wear my ER as it is, so I wouldn't want H to spend loads of money on something I wouldn't really appreciate.

Well we've had our first anniversary and I've given birth to our first child so um...I'm not holding out much hope! He knows I want one though.

As we are not having children I dont know when to expect one really, our first anniversary has been and gone so maybe 5 years?

I know the exact one I want, its very expensive though so I will probably be waiting until I am 75 for it!

Ive just gone onto the Tiffany website and they dont do it any more [:'(]

    This is the most similar I can find but I would want it made with Aquamarines as opposed to diamonds;

That's made me cry! Not that it takes much at the moment, mind you Smiley winking

I'd like one for the birth of our first child, but realistically we won't be in the position to spend money at that time. I think 10-year anniversary would be good. The plan is to let things settle down right now and then have £10 a month put away to put towards the ring.

I know exactly what I want, and it needn't necessarily be too expensive. I want a yellow-gold ring with alternating diamonds and sapphires all the way round. My wedding ring is very slim, so the eternity ring can be too, which will bring the price down as the stones won't be big.

Oh no!! Bespoke ring it is then, what a shame ?

It’s lovely, and would be even more lovely in Aquamarines. Good choice!

WIKI say it's given on a significant anniversary. I was always told that you get it after your first child because this is when you are truly joined for an eternity, , , (whether you like it or not?).

I never knew the actual tradition behind eternity rings. I don't think OH actually knows what they are, and I'm a bit put off by the silly couples I went to school with who gave each other eternity rings because they weren't actually serious enough about each other to get engaged, so I don't see me ever getting one.

The "tradition" was created in the 60s by De Beers, who had made a deal with the Russians to buy their diamonds, but the diamonds were mostly too small to be used as solitaires, so they devised "eternity" rings. The original advertising slogan was apparently "She married you for richer, for poorer. Let her know how it's going."

So there's not really a long tradition compared with engagement and wedding rings, which is why there is some flexibility about when it should be given.

I've just remembered that my mum wears hers on the other hand (does this still count as an eternity ring if my dad bought it with that intent?). If I ever got one I'd probably do this too as I don't think it would look right with the other two.

I hate it! I wish I hadn't have changed it now, was totally irrational and was a bit of a lunatic for a day or so when I was all wound up over the whole incident!(Thank god for HT listening to my innane drivel over that period!) I'll always be VP really! ? I feel too daft to change it back though! What a wally! Really glad you came back!

Change it back! We won't think you're daft. My brain doesn't register the new name anyway, I think you'll always be VP to most of us.

Thats Lovely Mini. Mines really dainty, which is good as my wedding ring is quite wide.
