Evening dress help please

SophieM, 20 October, 2008 at 14:11 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 43

I have a black-tie function to go to for work. This is the third year in a row I've been, and for the last two years I've worn the same (lovely) black sequinned dress. Not sure I can get away with wearing it again though ?

I've had a browse online in all the usual shops (Topshop, LKB, Karen Millen etc) and nothing's jumping out at me. Has anyone seen anything lovely?

Must be:
Under £200
Able to be worn with black shoes
Cut to flatter biggish norks and broad shoulders
Ideally not strapless

Not fussed re colour or length. I'm 5'8 and size 10-12.

Depending on timescale and the shops you have nearby some bridesmaid dresses are really nice and evening dressy - jim hjelm, alvina valenta, lazaro, watters and watters, dessy and could fit the budget. I got a couple of really bargainous ones from ebay and one from USA all under £100.

I am normally the person who needs fashion help, so no idea if this would be flattering or not but I love it!

Thanks ladies. Jaz, I really don't want to buy something online, it's just so unreliable from the point of view of fit and size.

Timotei, that's pretty but there's no way it would suit me, I am very straight up and down and have no waist whatsoever!

I didn't have time to check out the frocks, but I'm just back from house of fraser (specifically, the shoe dept) who have a massive sale on- up to 70% off. You could bag yourself an amanda wakely for that budget if you get down there...

Ah such a shame as I can't wear it either (I don't think) and was hoping someone would be able to do it justice for me!

Sunset, none of those would work with my figure - the neckline is too high and they're too waisted, I'd look v dumpy.

KN, I remember that dress, it's fab.

? Lou - will check out HoF.

If you can't find anything else, you would be welcome to borrow it- mine's a 12 if that's any good. Having new things is nice though, hmmm.....

CD, you're right, the first one's neckline is too high, and the second one is too waisty.

Oh dear - everything seems to be high necked or a sodding prom dress atm.

KN, that's a really kind offer. I think a 12 would be right for me in KM as they come up quite small. If all else fails...

What about? https://www.oasisfashion.com/womens/dresses Simple and strappy enough to show off the cleavage lol, there are a couple of 20's inspired on there as well, great for the no waist people like me, I love the dress but being as short as I am it would be midcalf?

? Titchbunny, I was looking at that a moment ago, and rejected it because it's almost identical to the one I've worn the past 2 times.

I'm quite liking this http://www.oasis-stores.com/fcp/product/Oasis/Dresses/Cowl-embellished-maxi-dress/3170050601 although there might be bra issues with it.

I was thinking of that because of your great long legs (seen on HPAD ?) I love that one your looking at, I would try a stick on bra or just petals, so you don't get the nipple thing. Several firms make bras with love backs, I think Panache do a multi one that would go that low. Personally I would say braless with petals.

I have a Temperley dress I was about to Fleabay you can borrow if you like. It's backless though so needs a stick on bra, not sure if that's doable.

I can try and dig out some photos if you like. It's knitted silk halter neck(sounds grim I know) and it mainly black with purple and cream (sounds even grimmer). Chookster has seen photos.

I've 5'9 and it comes to around my knee (I bought it to hide the gammy knee)

Annies in Camden Passage, Islington has some lovely vintage frocks that I was drooling through the window over yesterday, the FrostFrench store also looks like it's got some nice stuff in at the moment. Would also probably be worth a wander down Marlebone High Street? There are some great boutiques down there you should be able to get something individual from for £200.

I miss being able to wear pretty things.

Chook, there are some fab looking things on there, I'm just wary of buying online unless it's a brand I know sizing-wise.

POD, thanks lovely, but I think because I'm a bit shorter than you it would hit me at the biggest part of my runner's calves ?

Marylebone could def be worth a wander ?

I can't do braless unfortunately, but I do have a multiway Wonderbra that works with just about anything.

When's the 'do'? Is it before or after our next meet? I have a gorgeous purple chiffon LK Bennett knee length number you could borrow. Or a floorlength halterneck black jersey number which is very flattering (not that you need flattering!) and a bit shexy. Or a black & white Coast number which is strapless, but with straps you can add. Will find pics for you in case they're any good.

KN's dress is gorgeous, I tried it on (well, not KN's actual dress, but in the shop?) but I needed a size 11 - gaaaaah

Hmmmm, no, I don't like that - there's somnething a bit grandma-ish about the organza back. Shame, because the cut and the colour are lovely.

    <jumps on the dress-offering bandwagon>

do you want to borrow the grey dress of loveliness again? it's just been cleaned so there is no trace of sick prior wear. although not sure it's swish enough for a black tie do, actually. and may not go with black shoes, i always wear silver with it. anyway, i can pop it in the post if you want it.

    </jumps off>
